As a teacher and long time player. Don't let this discourage you. There is a lot going on that make's it sound far more difficult than it is. Let it inspire you to keep playing. The 12 String really enhances how "Full" it sounds and the Capo has a big effect on the pull off's. And anyone with Rhythm can slap the body of the acoustic to create a "Drum" sound. So if this blows your mind, good, it's excellent playing. All I am saying is some of the things that make it seemingly really stand out can be done by most experienced players. I see a lot of comments of discourage after watching this. Don't let it discourage you, let it inspire you to do the same. He isn't an Alien.

It took me 6 months to learn 10 years ago and I'm still improving some parts everytime I play it, I agree with you it's really not impossible but when you're not that experienced some parts can be quite tricky, however every begginer should try to learn ocean at some point, the sooner the better, learning this took me to a whole different level back then, I've learned many more songs in open c after this one, the possibilities always amaze me, anyway all of you guys who feel like you can't do it go ahead and try to learn ocean even though it seems hard, take it one piece at a time and you'll get there.

Amazing guitarist and artist, but I have a Maton 12 string that will be 50 years old next month - has had two new tops on it, once due to being stolen by a motorcycle gang and being left on a beach, and the other time due to an accident - but still sounds utterly fantastic! Tommy Emmanuel when he played it said it was one of the best sounding 12-strings he'd ever heard. But if I saw John Butler coming to play it, I'd run five miles before I'd let him near it! He plays Matons too - but he beats the livin' fuckin' bejeezus out of them - but what a guitarist!! Great stuff, John Butler, I love your music!!

Listening to this song has to be one of the most comforting things in the world. A place I go to relieve everything and release my spirit. John Butler is more than a guitarist, and he’s more than an artist. This has been my favourite song ever since I’ve first heard it. There’s something about it that I cannot explain, it exceeds the limitations of language. Yet I feel like I understand it deeply inside of me. The power of music

The part at 6:40 will always be my favorite, this song is in my soul, it touches my heart in ways I couldn’t imagine. ---A very close friend of mine whom upon meeting and who’s death altered the course of my life showed me this song one night as we bonded over guitar, forming a friendship that was as deep as the ocean. (Pun is probably intentional) and when I hear this I feel him, our friends and family live on through the love we share and have shared with them, they live through the moments where the melody synchronizes with a memory, where the past meets the present and forms a unique place in time. Each time I hear this I meet my friend again in a new way, with my new ideas and my new hopes, fears and dreams. I miss him, but here he is in these melodies, chords and percussive actions. I hope everyone could experience this, to have an immense love for a person and a shared passion and adoration for music, to have the music bring that person to life inside your heart and mind. One other thing this song gives me can be summed up in the words of Heraclitus when he said “Panta Rhea” Nothing abides, all flows. This song captures that this in such an eloquent and potent way. love you John! And love you all❤️

This is the one that sparked my passion for music. The reason I started travelling just to go busking on every street throughout Europe and the reason I never give up on my music. It brought me out of my shell and slowly released the grip social anxiety had on me back then. It brings me way back, to when KZbin was in it's infancy, and badly-recorded mobile videos of John busking the streets of Australia were circling. I have yet to experience JBT live, but has remained on top of my bucketlist ever since I fell in love with this imperfect perfection called Ocean. Thank you for this beautiful music.

This track is a healing meditation for me. My emotions roll with the waves, you can cry, scream, laugh and just release and by the end, I picture myself as a playful dolphin with nothing to worry about in the world but this beautiful sensation of swimming through the ocean currents. This track brought me back when I got sick and my mind felt like it had a vise on it and all I felt was heavy and angry and foggy, my brain was literally slowly dying. I remember the moment I started to feel again, it was at a concert to raise money for the bush fires in NSW, listening to this track. John truly has an amazing gift and I am so grateful he shares that, and so much of himself, with us.

“I don’t know where I got this saying from but it kinda resonates with me… energy, positivity, negativity - it’s like a fire. I often have a battle with the brain because it’s one of those great big tools that’s here to serve me and not for me to serve it, but I find that a lot of the time I am serving my brain - I don’t exactly know why but… the more you put energy into good stuff, it’s like a fire, the more good thoughts you put on it the bigger the fire gets; the more bad thoughts you put on it, the bigger the bad fire gets… I’d like to think that during this next song I can be putting some good thoughts and some good vibes on the good fire… and it’s kinda the only thing that gives me faith in this crazy mixed-up world that we live in. If you wanna join the power of thought and intention - if you believe in that - then join me in putting out some good stuff to all your brothers and sisters, in faraway lands and close by.” - John Butler
