This will be skit that I save for all eternity. I shared this with my siblings last night at midnight. My Dad passed away today, on Veterans Day at 8am. He LOVED the Steelers. So many of our conversations were like this. He had a great sense of humor, but really could not talk about feelings. Just football. He was 86. I feel like this was the message he wanted to send.

This is one of the realest sketches SNL has done. It captures old school dads to a tee. Getting them to open up and show vulnerability is like pulling teeth. I guess it’s because they grew up in a time when feelings weren't talked about much. They just did what they had to do because they didn’t have the luxury sit around and be introspective and ask themselves how things made them feel.

Were you in your 20s back in the 70s? If not, you can only infer that from what you heard from people who were, and assume everything they said was 100% accurate. That, or, you just assumed. That's like saying it isn't that bad for people in their 20s today. You know you. Everyone else's experiences at different times is just hearsay. Again, even if you were in your 20s in the 70s, speak for yourself.

😂 It's because you're taught from an early age as a boy Not to show emotion and especially don't show weakness. Because you'll get made fun of by men and women alike. It's what happens when women aren't soft and understanding and empathetic anymore. Because that's who men used to be able to go to with their problems.

He taught me how to ride a bike, play baseball, how to fish, fix my car, how to camp and walk quietly on a trail observing nature. He was full of witt and wisdom that he shared with my sister and I and the neighborhood kids. He was one of the Dads that came out to play with the kids. I am so sorry for your loss. My dad is getting older and I feel this so hard -- my dad and I were not that close when I was young. I do love that whenever I talk to him nowadays he lights up about the Warriors, how Steph is doing etc. I then give him shit because I grew up in Portland so I root for the Blazers and he neglected to pass on an actual dynasty to root for, lol But yeah just the whole cliche of bonding over sports with your dad is a real thing, and those times are some of the closest I've felt to my dad, and I'm so grateful for him. He's old, and yeah that time is coming, so I'm trying to find those moments to share things too. Hope you're doing well, man. It's awesome you got the time to connect with your dad later on.

Nice to see another slice-of-life sketch on the show, not trying to force in the comedy. Very well-acted and natural. The moments with Bill trying to tell Andrew about his health problems without directly telling him were the best but everything works. One of Kenan's best performances in the last few seasons as well. A season highlight.

My father (huge Steelers fan) just passed away on September 16 and my grandfather was just two years earlier. Them seeming more concerned with football and cars is dead on. My wife was sure I would lose it watching this sketch, and while I did tear up, the truth is that just because the two men in my life are gone, that doesn't mean I can't handle dad stories or other people still having their own loving fathers be there for them.

My dad passed away during the pandemic. He had a stroke, then lost his vision, then had another stroke. He was suffering from dementia at the end and the last time I spoke to him on the phone (because of hospital rules I couldn't see him) he was totally gone. He wasn't himself and it broke my heart. He was such a kind man and great father. He took care of 4 kids after he finally won custody, because my mom was a physically abusive NIGHTMARE. This makes me miss him so much. If your dad is alive and if he is a good man and loves you, give him a call.

I hear you. I lost my dad in the summer of 2020. He didn't die of COVID, but all of the rules made everything so much harder. It was the reason I missed his final moments. It even forced his funeral to be cut short. He was a wonderful man. He kept his mind until near the very end, but he got uncharacteristically cranky. We both thought he had a few more months than he did, and we didn't know that our last phone call would be our last phone call. We spent a good chunk of it discussing different routes for a cross-country trip I'd taken with my wife, and he was surprisingly upset to learn that we'd driven through a relatively rural area. ("What if you had a breakdown!" "But we didn't have a breakdown, and we were never more than a few miles away from other people." "That's not the point!") It was a ridiculous conversation, but it was his way of expressing love and concern. I wish I'd been more present for it, and I still regret that. Anyway. I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry that it was under those conditions. It sounds like your dad was an amazing, stand-up guy.

@@zerocal76 My dad is an insufferable asshole. The thought of calling him again for any reason makes me sad and anxious. My dad has never had trouble expressing emotion and neither have I. That's not our problem. I used to call him on a regular basis, even though I often regretted it. I can't deal with his emotional and mental abuse and bigotry anymore. Same with my mom and 2 or my 3 siblings. I really hate the idea that I always have to be the one to "reach out" to people (family, friends, relatives, etc.). I'm introverted and have social anxiety, damn it! Why must I have to reach out first EVERY time!? Yet, that is how it is. Man this is so spot on. I call my dad a couple of times a month. He always asks how my car is doing or how work is going. Sometimes he opens up, but most of the time if I try to ask, he says "hey, here's your mom". But he has those rare times when he opens up, but if it gets too much he will end the phone call. But he randomly tells me sometimes "hey, I never got to talk to my Dad the way we talk". Me being a father, I sort of understand that loneliness. My daughter is a teenager and she asks me all the time "hey Dad are you okay? Can I get anything for you?". And my response is always "Nah, i'm fine Princess." Even though I may not be 100% truthful. I'm silently afraid of the time when I can't call to just hear his voice. But that day will come for all of us.
