This is one of the realest sketches SNL has done. It captures old school dads to a tee. Getting them to open up and show vulnerability is like pulling teeth. I guess it’s because they grew up in a time when feelings weren't talked about much. They just did what they had to do because they didn’t have the luxury sit around and be introspective and ask themselves how things made them feel.

@amphibeingmcshpongletron5026Ай бұрын
Were you in your 20s back in the 70s? If not, you can only infer that from what you heard from people who were, and assume everything they said was 100% accurate. That, or, you just assumed. That's like saying it isn't that bad for people in their 20s today. You know you. Everyone else's experiences at different times is just hearsay. Again, even if you were in your 20s in the 70s, speak for yourself.

😂 It's because you're taught from an early age as a boy Not to show emotion and especially don't show weakness. Because you'll get made fun of by men and women alike. I hear you. I lost my dad in the summer of 2020. He didn't die of COVID, but all of the rules made everything so much harder. It was the reason I missed his final moments. It even forced his funeral to be cut short. He was a wonderful man. He kept his mind until near the very end, but he got uncharacteristically cranky. We both thought he had a few more months than he did, and we didn't know that our last phone call would be our last phone call. We spent a good chunk of it discussing different routes for a cross-country trip I'd taken with my wife, and he was surprisingly upset to learn that we'd driven through a relatively rural area. ("What if you had a breakdown!" "But we didn't have a breakdown, and we were never more than a few miles away from other people." "That's not the point!") It was a ridiculous conversation, but it was his way of expressing love and concern. I wish I'd been more present for it, and I still regret that. Anyway. I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry that it was under those conditions. It sounds like your dad was an amazing, stand-up guy.

Fate can be so cruel to the greatest people. But the legacy remains: that you and your three siblings got to thrive. He sacrificed so that four wonderful people could safely be themselves. And his legacy is there - because your heart works, thanks to him. I'm sorry for your loss, but I'm glad you can share his story and can be here to thrive and share a moment with the world. All the best to you and your fam.

@@MatthewTheWanderer Don't wait very long. One day he won't be able to pick up the phone even if he has/had the intention to do so. Some of us have to accept that we're the ones who will be the ones reaching out, showing some emotion, some expression of care. Some dads just can't bring it out though its there (my dad for example).
@MatthewTheWanderer2 ай бұрын
@@zerocal76 My dad is an insufferable asshole. The thought of calling him again for any reason makes me sad and anxious. My dad has never had trouble expressing emotion and neither have I. That's not our problem. I used to call him on a regular basis, even though I often regretted it. I can't deal with his emotional and mental abuse and bigotry anymore. Same with my mom and 2 or my 3 siblings. I really hate the idea that I always have to be the one to "reach out" to people (family, friends, relatives, etc.). I'm introverted and have social anxiety, damn it! Why must I have to reach out first EVERY time!? Yet, that is how it is. No one reaches out to me and I don't reach out to them, so I remain socially isolated.

@remus25652 ай бұрын
Man this is so spot on. I call my dad a couple of times a month. He always asks how my car is doing or how work is going. Sometimes he opens up, but most of the time if I try to ask, he says "hey, here's your mom". But he has those rare times when he opens up, but if it gets too much he will end the phone call. But he randomly tells me sometimes "hey, I never got to talk to my Dad the way we talk". Me being a father, I sort of understand that loneliness. My daughter is a teenager and she asks me all the time "hey Dad are you okay? Can I get anything for you?". And my response is always "Nah, i'm fine Princess." Even though I may not be 100% truthful. I'm silently afraid of the time when I can't call to just hear his voice. But that day will come for all of us.
