I'm teenager and starting hunting soon. I have practised for a while and i shoot pretty well but I have never been "in the action" in the forest. I have always covered my ears when i've practised. I would like to cover them when hunting in the forest too but I think I can't hear the animal I'm trying to shoot. What should I do?

Hi Kristoffer, thanks for sharing the video. The only thing that strikes a bit is the exit damage probably due to the big caliber. It looks like an overkill.

30-06 is actually fine for roedeer, no bigger exit wounds than the smaller calibers is my experience. The bullet and the speed of the bullet has more to say in my opinion.

You are right, the type of bullet and its speed are the most important. Out there is a lot of info, opinions and solutions about it. In my experience when shooting roe with 50gr 3150fts in .222 through the ribs most of the times the entry and exit points are not obvious even pieces of bone and lung can be found on the ground. The situation is different with foxes, same bullet will some times open the rib cage on the exit side. Then, when shooting with a 243 I can definitely see the exit wound. At the end of the day, is down to personal preferences and for me, the difference in calibers is clear when the shot is badly placed. A 100gr .243 bullet will drop a roe and will make bloody mince with smashed bone on the spot when shot through the shoulders. But this comes after the last moment of a nice and successful outing.
