for the guys asking about elevation and DA: my runs showed a DA of 5,885 and Jon's were at 1,730 which does introduce another small variable into the equation. A head-to-head race on the same track would be ideal, and who knows... maybe in the future we'll meet up and run in person.

Key to keeping these engines alive, is cylinder pressure. It’s easier to keep cylinder pressure lower at lower rpm’s with a properly build turbo system, than your roots style blower. You have to figure that a supercharger takes hp to drive. So a 600hp super charged motor and a 600hp turbocharged engine(talking at the wheels) are not equal. The turbo engine is not working as hard, as the supercharged engine that requires the engine to spin the blower via the accessory drive. Hope that makes sense to the layman.

I think Richard Holder tested the 4.8 to see how "MUCH" was too much in the way of Nos and Boost and I'm pretty sure it maxxed out at like 1300 HP before it shed the rods . So yea depending on clearances & miles you can easily spend whatever life is left in the 4.8 by leaning too hard on it ... I'm pretty sure you would benefit greatly with a Torque convertor upgrade .. ..

Yeah my '65 Impala with a 283 2bbl, 3.36:1 rear gears and a power glide ran about the same QM time as your bone stock 4.8 truck! Now with a 100 more cubes and a 700R4 and a 12 bolt with 3.07"1 rear gears with a posi it's about 5.5 seconds faster. Man, I couldn't even spin the tires on wet pavement with that car with the original drivetrain! LOL But I'm thinking about tweaking the 283 and re-installing it into the Impala, the trans not so much that thing needs to stay out! Besides I gave it away already after the 383 blew up 1st and reverse gears at the track. heh heh heh. I'm thinking that 283 will run WAY more gooder as a 370, would of considered making it a 383 but a 4.00" stroker crank is out of my price range but who knows by the time I get to it?

Don't forget the important part about racing remotely via dragging- elevation. Down in Louisiana it's basically sea level, and up in Utah where you are is significantly above - to the tune of a 20% power loss. So you're not making as much power as you would be in Louisiana, or he's making more than he would be in Utah. If y'all had met up and raced, I don't think he would have edged you out in the quarter - you likely would have kept that initial lead all the way out. That said, it sucks that he popped something, but it happens in racing. I'm sure that between your channel and his that he'll be able to get it taken care of promptly- I'm sure there's people watching that would be able to help/contribute. Maybe someone has a 4.8 laying around that they replaced with something bigger? That's a benefit of this community- we all understand and like to help. I'm waiting for the teardown, as well as the inevitable rematch. 😀 Possibly an actual head to head, to eliminate the variables? 😉

@stevenbelue54962 жыл бұрын
How? Most heads are designed with water jackets and runners taking up the rest of the circumference around the cylinder, plus it needs to be completely load bearing, meaning you need solid metal from the bottom side of the head bolt all the way to the deck, it doesn't need to go through a water jacket or runner (it could compress and crack the head). Edited: edited to say I read your comment again and I assume you are drilling a hole big enough to go through the water jacket with the bolt head and using a pipe plug to seal the top hole. Hard to explain but I think I understand what you are doing.
