I just don't get it someone is kind and willing enough to make a 1 hour video for people to watch and learn, and all some people can do is complain and criticize. If they can make a better one go ahead and do so. I have built hundreds of motors over the years and could not do as good as a job explaining the steps. I originally just wanted to say thanks but then saw all the negative replies. Once again realizing how many ungrateful self centered people are really out there. My 7 yr old GIRL does these menial tasks in the workshop !.. Harleys a basically the same as old petters diesil engines or old massy Ferguson tractors.. All you have to remember is after a full rebuild you shouldn't have any more than 15 spare bolts, 7 spare nuts and 2 spare cogs !... It won't start if you have a spare chain !.. Easy-peasy...

First I want to say a big thank you to Justin and S&S for creating this video. I followed this step-by-step over a year ago, I waited purposely to comment until putting a substantial amount of miles on the bike after the upgrade. Just want to say the performance of the cam is great and I've had no problems whatsoever. I've probably got about three thousand miles on the new cams. I am thinking about doing a top-end upgrade, just the bolt on to take the 88 Cube to about 98 cube without boring cylinders. I was wondering if anybody knows of a video showing that procedure as detailed as this cam upgrade video is. Thanks again for the great video!

Question for anybody - my 2003 tc88 (fuel injected - V&H Short Shots exhaust, V&H Naked air cleaner & V&H fuel map) has 22k miles & I want more low end (rpm) torque. Any suggestions on which S&S cams will accomplish this. I'm going inside the cam plate to replace cam chain tenser with hydro tenser & may as well do a cam change while inside. Any suggestions from your experience will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is one of the best made, step-by-step, explanation video of how to replace the Cam. Sadly, 90% of "How To" & "DIY" videos lack the appropriate steps, assumes the viewer has done it before, assumes the viewer knows anything beforehand, has music drowning it out or which is inappropriate to the viewing audience and a long list of many other mistakes. We understand the price of the tool is higher than a hobbyist or backyard mechanic may be able to afford. Unfortunately, there are no lower priced alternatives available.

If a person keeps a bike for years and runs up 100,000 miles they will need these tools at least twice. Mine is a 2000 twin cam and it will need the cam tensioners replaced to prevent metal from getting into the engine. I will probably swap to a gear drive cam next time around.

Yes, but there may be rental options. And even if you did have to buy it, it's still cheaper than the labor charge the dealer would charge you to do the job. And you could always resale the tool later to recoup large portion of the cost.

I've held a shifter assembly in place using a rolled up playing card that I frayed at the ends(1 month like that) on a 90 katana, then on a 2000 rebel held my brake together with a paper clip, on many bikes I've held mirrors in place with paper clamps, used pliers as foot pegs, so much rigging I've done i couldn't believe it when i watched him cut those rods out and use a paper clip while working on this bike. I am impressed.

This is an outstanding instructional video. I am fairly mechanically inclined and this video almost gave me enough confidence to do my cam upgrade myself. But because of warranty ramifications I let the dealer do it. But I most definitely have a 1000% better understanding of what it takes to do it. Highly recommended!

Thankyou for taking the time to make this video. I was told by one guy that I should get a gear drive cam, I see now why that in itself can get very complicated if my crank is out of alignment that that engine is, so I'm guessing chain drive is the way to go if I ever deside to do a cam. And with your video, I feel more confident that I can do the job myself, as sofar, I've replaced my stereo, put on bars, and am preparing to take apart my primary. Back when I had my 96" motor I was always afraid I'd fuck something up by working on it myself. But now with my 103" I have lots of support from my local Harley dealer, and some old timers to where I've been attempting to work on my bike, and loving it

The more I see about these twin cam motors the more I appreciate the Shovlehead. I bought a 2002 FLSTC it is my first Harley newer than my 72 FLH. I have a wrecked 01 Road king I was going to rebuild but I think I will try to trade it for a good shovelhead. That lifter is like the shovlehead hydraulic lifter.

The haters are the prima donna mechanics that can't stand the fact that someone can wrench on their own scoot. When I was coming up we weren't afraid to tear something apart in the garage and learned a great deal helping others on their bikes. Nowadays some guys aren't confident enough in their abilities to change oil or plugs and wires let alone an in depth yet easy job such as a cam swap. Maybe someone will attempt something on their own because of this video and stop perpetuating that only Harley certified mechanics are able to do anything at all on a bike. Just back from Sturgis. Met a biker with a 2003 TC88 Elctra Glide exactly like mine. Over the years he replaced the engine and converted to gear drive. Then I saw the odometer... 489000 miles. (The bike looked like it too)

I have 30 years as a Harley Tech (factory trained on first gen Evo's) and this is a great video...however, he forgot to mention putting in the new O-Ring push rod cover seals BEFORE you install the pushrods and covers....Just keep this in mind if you're attempting this on your own (pro tip). I am getting ready to install cams, lifters and adjustable push rods in my Road Glide. I've watched this video a couple times and Fuel Moto's videos a couple times. I have all of my parts from Fuel Moto and am ready to start my installation. I don't know how much easier you could make a cam install. Both J&P and Fuel Moto do a wonderful job and I fully appreciate their help and expertise. Adjustable push rods will make my life easier and if I decide to do a big bore kit and remove my heads, the adjustable push rods will stay. Randy

This is an excellent video. Clear and concise. Many thanks. I mentioned to my local shop that I was planning to do this. He cautioned me that with 88,000 miles a higher lift cam would probably ruin the valve seals. The valves would be moving deeper into the seal and any roughness on the stem would slowly eat away at the seal. Another point he made, The piston rings are bound to have some wear. The increase in power could cause oil consumption. He suggested leave it alone or go the whole route. remove heads and cylinders. Install new rings, do complete valve job.

Nothing wrong with a set of adjustable pushrods. Otherwise pulling the entire rocker box new gaskes and lifting the tank is involved. You'll never have a problem with the adjustables

bloodyBill not sure I understand question.. But if your are talking about the cam install on stock H-D; I believe you meant you have gear driven cams and not belt driven cams. Off the show room models should have chain driven cams. I know the gear driven cams can not have crank with too much run out, but chain driven cams can have slightly more

I should not have bitched about this post without having an alternative way of doing this. I just assumed you all would figure it out. So to do this without cutting the push rods you will have to take the rockers off. This is easy to do it just takes more time. On the rear cylinder one of the rocker bolts will hit the frame and will not come out. So you take a bolt out of the top motor mount and pry the motor over in it's rubber mount's with a crow bar and it will come out. This way cost me $140. for the new cam chain tensioner's and about $50 for the tool. Do every thing this fine mechanic doe's only don't cut the rods, take the rockers off . No adjustment is needed. Put it back together the same way it came apart. DO NOT MIX UP THE PUSH RODS ONE IS SHORTER! wait there are 4 so 2 are shorter. Do not turn the motor over while it is apart! This way you use the stock rods and you don't have to adjust anything. I didn't even buy new gaskets there was nothing wrong with the old one's. This was easier for me. For this mechanic time is money and he can adjust a push rod in his sleep. For the amateur adjusting a push rod can be hard. Once you have it apart you can go to a hydraulic or gear drive or just put the stock ones back in. Both of these way,s will work but neither is the right way. The RIGHT WAY goes like this. Take the crank out have it welded, plugged and trued. Then put a gear drive in her and run the shit out of it because it is now bullet proof. It would have been nice if Harley would have trued the crank at the factory but that cost's more money. It's cheaper just to press the crank together send it out the door with a wobbling crank and let us fix them.

+fredmagee I agree, don't cut the pushrods.. in my case, my '02 Electra glide, I wanted to remove tank, rockers & related stuff to change out my 'spring loaded tensioners' why? Harley has a lot of upgraded gaskets, fuel hoses, breathers & few other parts that I could replace along the way... my total cost was around $250-$300. oh yea, I bought the same tensioners b/c this bike probably won't see another 20k miles!

I bought a 66 sportster, It was slow, and vibrated horibley was a night mare to work on. I got rid of it in 72, I have road nothing but Kawasaki street bikes and yamaha dirt bikes ever since. Why pay twice as much money for a slow vibrater ??????
