Paradigms of Leadership returns with a new lecture on the late Ahmed Bullock, a respected British Muslim, Arabic and Hebrew scholar, dealer in books, and the first English Imam of Oxford. Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad takes us through his life, looking at a number of the Imam's own handwritten letters.
This talk was recorded in Ramadan 2021 (h. 1442).

Mashallah, may Allah protect Shaykh Abdul Hakeem, really enjoyed this series. It’s a pity Imam Ahmad Bullock was not bought to our attention in his lifetime. Gem of a person. Barakallahu Feekum to everybody at CMC for this series.

Humbling and inspirational. May Allah reward Shaykh Abdul Hakim and all involved with bringing this series to us. Most interesting to me after 33 years since my own conversion to Islam was how Idris guided Ahmed to concentrate most on his own inner state, spiritual journey and relationship to Allah through the sort of "back to basics" focus on essential, simple practices done with consistency. This is exactly what I find matters to me most at this stage of my life and journey as a Muslim. There is beauty and accessibility in how simple Islam truly is and this is what brought me to it in the first place. The entanglements and distractions of worldy affairs in the matter of the Muslim ummah and its divisions are of no interest to me and I feel that Ahmed was well guided by Idris Shah in this in the latter part of his life. It is extremely touching listening to their correspondence and sensing the intimacy and love of friends connected by the love of Allah over many years. It is also a testimony to the benefit of having a spiritual guide, mentor and dear friend on the path - especially as a convert, which in my experience can feel very isolating. However, listening to this I have a poignant awareness that it is not as easy for women to find and access this kind of spiritual mentorship and friendship. Men have more time and personal freedom away from the kitchen sink and are validated in their desire for experiences and spiritually elevating connections beyond home and hearth. So for me, the story of Ahmed Bullock also illustrates that men had and still have more opportunity to seek, find and nurture such relationships among other men who devote a lot of their lives to scholarship and the mentorship of other men. I'm aware of a sense of sadness listening to this sort of "Who's Who" in the Muslim annals, where it's clear there is a male privelege in men's lived socio-spiritual realities and the recounting/valorising of them, and the danger of a gender blindness to that unless we acknowledge it and the impact of it. Even listening to this has its impact from that perspective, as it is in some sense perpetuating my feeling of being "on the outside looking in" as a woman, although I hasten to add that I still greatly enjoyed and benefitted from hearing this and am galvinised in my commitment to the simplest practices of fard prayer and dhikr. In fairness though, I'd also like to say that it is wonderful to see and feel that CMC are modelling an admirable commitment to inclusiveness for Muslim women, both with including women as subjects in this Paradigms of Leadership series and also in giving women opportunity to study, teach and lead on CMC courses and the content on this excellent channel.

He wasn't guided by Idries Shah but received advice, which he didn't always take, from Idries's father. He was a boyhood friend of Idries but I believe disapproved of his adult associations and "entrepreneurship": magic and Sufism without Islam, for example.

Dear Shaikh, assalam alaikum, inshallah all is well. Thank you for your illuminating discourse. Alhamdillah you offered an insightful perspective on Idris Shah and brought to our attention the work of Shaikh Ahmed Bullock. May I suggest that you consider replacing parasitical with symbiotic at 30:50 in the presentation, as I am sure that our brothers in the restaurant trade were providing a service.

Interesting that Khalid Sheldrick was appointed to be Amir of the Uyghur Muslims around 1935. Somewhat earlier, though I am not sure of the date, an Uzbek by the name of Torajan Sabuni was accorded a similar accolade. He is famed as the author of the Seerat of the Holy Prophet, in Uzbek. The family of Torajan Sabuni is still very well known in Tashkent.

I had the honour of meeting with one of Shaykh Nazim's (q) close disciples in Germany, Shaykh Hassan Abdul Ahad Dyck (q). There I was astonished and very happy inside of my heart to see a thriving muslim community with a strong thrust on Shariah while practising the 'sober' tassawuf of the Naqshbandi methodology in the West of Germany. I had never seen such a beauty in my home place in the eastern sub-continent + central asian lands. I wish with my heart that Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad does an episode on Shaykh Nazim (q). There are so many of like us, who were not turned away at the door of the house of Shaykh Nazim (q). The renaissance of Islam in America and Europe is a reality that me and many like me feel and partake in each month with the beautiful muslim jama'ats here.

Even if it is not wanting to fight with a Muslim, it s incredible just how much fighting and destruction that stops; even when the Islamic call to allow the safety of other religious communities and their sacred places are ignored. Truly, Islam transcends the nationalism and mere politics of the modern time.

Not sure why Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad seems to have omitted this point, but Ahmad Bullock was not able to subsist from his book business in Oxford. For many years, he worked on the floor of the British Leyland plant in Cowley.

I extract info from this book but I would like to know about the author. He could not be an anonymous. At least there at the cataloguing data provides his birthdate so that we could guess that this al-Ghazali is junior than the other famous al-Ghazali mentioned in a book written by Y. Q. (I read the translated one) I self-published book too. There my birthdate (1980- ). This means the writer is alive around the book is published. Many people hesitate about people knowing their birthdate. I am not. By next year I am 40+2 =42. Old.

A slight dig at the sister,Meghan Markel, at 5: 19:). But what if the good Muslim, like many African American Muslims, believe in "woke" justice? If there are right sounding muslims,is it permissible for left sounding Muslims to counter claim?
