I love this camera. The usability is superb. And the ability to use the XLR hot shoe adapter is wonderful. It is the only full frame camera for unlimited recording in 4k extreme low light with no external recorder. The 70-200 lens is amazing but 24-105 also very nice. I'll be shooting more video and some studio portraits this week. Very very happy with it.

Out of my price range. I have grown to really like Panasonic M43 cameras. The weight and size I really like. I also like the 4K video and still images. Love the G9. I've used both manual and auto focus and am happy. The IBIS is great. It does all I want. But as always, I love your camera reviews. Hands on and honest.

I recently picked this camera up for $1250 with very low shutter. Omg!!! The sooc as well as raws are some of the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve shot with the A7Riv, R6ii, A7iv, as well as X T5 and XH2s. I’m blown away by the colors and overall rendition. Sooc video is amazing too. Everything about this camera has blown me away. The af is much better than what some others were reporting. Low light it’s fantastic too. Some have compared this to a Leica SL2 and I can see why. They have very similar specs like the high output photos have the same mp count.

Great and unbiased review, thank you Gordon! I love the S1's rich feature set and build quality and wanted very much to buy this camera but, the more I had hands on experience with the S1, the more I came to realize that there are some video related features I just cant live without. ( full manual control in high frame rates, slow motion that allows you the choice of conforming or not, 24p 4k, the possibility of 10 bit or even raw, ect ) As a future film maker / videographer, I care much less about the 4k60, if the camera has great quality high frame rate 1080p, and much more about the actual quality of the footage and its ability to be graded later. But I also have to be able to afford the tools I need to work with and this is an expensive, albeit capable, piece of kit!! For the camera body and the kit lens its currently 3400.00 here in the States. For a 1000.00 dollars less, I can get most of the S1's features in the Nikon Z6 with more dependable auto-focus even before the upcoming firmware. And 10bit into the Ninja V. And then later, the very real possibility of shooting ProRez Raw with this much cheaper camera!. I love the Panasonic and its wonderful build quality and video features.....but I'm not sure I love it ....$1000.00 more even if your getting a longer lens and a few extra features and minus a few compared to other cameras. For the difference, I could be MOST of the way to buying a BMPCC4K ....and then get a Nikon Z6 and literally have the very best of everything! When we are talking the kind of price tags this camera and it's lens lineup cost, the alternatives out there are very hard to ignore.
@cameralabs

I agree. We all have to weigh up the prices and feature sets closely. I have a feeling the July firmware update will include more than just 10 bit and v-log, but I really hope they consider making it free, especially as a light version of v-log is now on the Lumix G90.

Great movie ibis and amazing colors for pictures...the true hibrid camera I waited 2 decades to arrive...Fuji xh1...

Another wonderful review...Thank you Gordon. So, my question: Does Panasonic plan a S1/S1R firmware update for the CF Express card? One company has driven XQD prices through the roof at the expense of Nikon and now Panasonic XQD users. CF Express prices are comparable, but CF Express is about 4times the speed of XQD...plus CF E is backwards compatible. Most importantly, one company will not corner the market so prices should be competitive. Problem is S1H can't be converted with SD card slots :[...same with Sony, Fuji, Canon, etc.

Great video! You’re right, the S1 should hv a flip-out screen like the GH5, especially at this price point; it would have been the perfect hybrid camera. The contrast auto focus is the best contrast AF I’ve seen. It seems better than the EOS R, (which isn’t the best dual-pixel AF, but it’s better with the firmware update?). That would be interesting if Panasonic has yet to release a S1s video-centric camera, 6k? RAW? EVA2 8k? Hoping the S1 gets false color & waveform. Also, an anti-flickering mode would be nice, instead of fiddling with shutter speed & frequency. I hope the color science has improved from the GH5. Panasonic has really pushed the envelop in technology with the S1 & S1R, so glad they continue to make breakthroughs and put so much into each camera.

Again a great revue, Gordon. I spent the morning reading your book, then I went out on an autumn walk with my G9, and now I am watching your reviews: What a nice lazy Sunday 😀. Question: Is there a chance you could do an update of your S1 reviews, this time with the latest firmware 1.2 and the Vlog upgrade? I think quite a lot of release-day reviews weren‘t very balanced, especially those jumping on video CAF issues, despite it being an early firmware version. Your revue is very balanced, as always, but I feel the latest S1 upgrades are worthwhile taking a deeper look. What do you think?

Great review, as always. As a long time GH series videographer, I have often wanted a Super35 or FF version of these cameras. The S1 is a huge step in the right direction, but I am inclined to hold off until I see the prices of Sigma's lenses and fixes for their reportedly flawed adapter. I can justify the cost of the S1 body, but only if I am not forced to abandon my inventory of FF lenses. Yes, I realize native lenses will always perform better than adapted lenses, but I just won't start over with a gaggle of new lenses to adopt the S1 body. That said, I'm glad to see Panasonic moving in this direction. I am also curious to see how the S1 film maker firmware update fares. Exciting times to be a film maker.

The clips look good to me - more confident than the m43 bodies - wonder if DFD works better on full frame with narrower DoF?(thats a guess) - wonder if this will come to the other bodies - especially the linear focus modes for focus pulling by hand Lastly - did I miss steven seagull this time? :D

I think the autofocus is good enough for real world usage. Not spot on in some areas like Sony, but people usually do tests that are not going to be applied in real world. DFD is dumped on worse than it should be. I think if Panasonic does perfect DFD, it will be the best autofocus system on the market. I think it requires faster processors, so as tech improves we should see better results. I am surprised that this camera is not getting the hype from You Tubers as did Sony. The quality and ISO is amazing on this camera. There was so much hype and presentation about how Sony was the low ISO king, and every You tuber talking about ISO and dynamic range. There is not much out there about this camera. Thanks for your review.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, glad you liked it. I feel it's important to cut through any hype and marketing, as well as preconceptions from other reports or previous models. You simply have to test each new camera afresh and see how it performs. As I said in the video, I was impressed overall by the S1 and S1R and felt the DFD did a great job in many situations.
@keithgoreham1463

Honestly, unless you’re shooting sports, or fast-moving action at weddings, the autofocus is fine. You have to get used to the system’s AF quirks to get the best results, but the camera’s other features more than make up for that.

Thanks for the info! Great clip. Yeah the lack of a fully articulating screen is a weak point. Such a disappointment coming from the amazing little GH5. I need the screen to set up shots in tight areas using motion control systems. And setting up shots without a stand in... Lumix really needs to create one camera that can do both still and video well. The R5c is paving the way, as they fall behind.
@AndySnap
@AndySnap 5 жыл бұрын
Astounding what some video makers are expecting the camera to do for them... Amazing that technology is so good really, basically all just for KZbin people. This is surely the best hybrid stills & video camera on the market right now. And as you suggest Gordon, I'm pretty sure we'll see the Lumix full frame range expand, so a 'SH-1' video centric camera, and a smaller bodied (maybe rangefinder styled) 'SX' pro-sumer camera would be safe bets for the future I reckon. Why launch a new product system with only one camera with different resolution sensors..?

For some reason (where I'm from) with "release promotion" applied to S1 it's exactly the same price for both. Good thing to note is that B&H photo added Sigma lenses to their website for pre-order so I'm guessing they are right around the corner, and fairly for what they are. Video autofocus seems much more confident then DfD in m43 lineup. Panasonic is using its new dual focus system with an “ultrasonic assist system” in its new S lenses. Probably one of the reasons they cost so much. Plus a dedicated AF processor in the body. It’s great that they have done this but it also means most likely m43 won’t see these improvements without updated lenses. It also means DfD will suck, most likely, with any lens that isn’t a Panasonic one. I have mixed feelings about the S1. I really appreciate Panasonic’s approach and build quality. They really try to give their customers what they want and weight the pro and cons with consideration. I however a bit worried with the sinking camera market that they will start to act more like Canon in the future. Great review Gordon!

Really nice review and fair too.i am happy to see such a smooth autofocusing in this camera compared to anyone in the market,the transition is looking very good. Which is a key for videography,The best part about this sensor is it's so we'll behaved and stabilised that I almost believed that you were using a humble of some sort,besides there wasn't any refocusing issue while vlogging although you were walking in a variably luminated street. Nice camera I must say,it covers most of the cons from other full frame mirrorless in the market at the cost of slightly bigger body but that might be a plus for many I guess.Really like how simple and well placed dials and buttons unlike over crowded back of fuji.

Not to beat a dead horse, but to drive a point home to at least my satisfaction I set up a peaking test. I used the Panasonic S1, the Panasonic GH5, the Panasonic G85, the Nikon Z6, and the Fujifilm X-H1, all using third party lenses. With the GH5, G85, the Z6, and the X-H1 there was absolutely no change in the quality and intensity of the peaking settings between using peaking to set the focus up and after the camera started rolling. Sadly, after checking BOTH the EVF and the LCD of the S1 both showed a diminishment in the quality and intensity of peaking once the shot was rolling. This diminishment is SIGNIFICANT, at least on my S1---I'd say at 70% or more %% drop--sometimes very difficult to see, especially on the EVF. The effect of this is that if you change the focus to another object while rolling you either focus past it before you see it, or you focus past it because you're not sure if your focus is not quite right---and most often it isn't. How do I know that? Because if I stop the shot after shifting focus the original quality and intensity immediately appear. When that happens I find the focus I ended up with was not accurate. Either not focusing far enough, or focusing past the object you are simply guessing. It seems to me the peaking feature of the S1 is calibrated to be its best, most viewable, and most accurate before the shutter is pressed with a SIGNIFICANT drop off once you start rolling. Why? This is not the case with the other four cameras I tested---and two of them were Panasonics. The peaking of the GH5 and the G85 are just...okay ....But they are stable before and after the shot is made, and pretty accurate. The Nikon is excellent---very easy to use and accurate. Even the gosh-awful Sony peaking is better than the S1---and I didn't think it was possible that anyone could have worse peaking than Sony. (Silly me). By a hair I think the Fuji X-H1 is best, clean, easy to see without obscuring the shot, and very accurate. The Fuji folks have done it right---and they keep making the X-H1 and X-T3 better. Will someone with some contacts or influence pass this on to the Panasonic people. Maybe they know and don't care. Maybe it was done intentionally for reasons I can in no way surmise. Nikon has done a few analogous things on the Z6, but nothing as egregious as the S1 peaking problem.

It is illogical to see Panasonic not get DFD finally right. They have heard all the roasting for DFD breathing backgrounds. I think soon DFD will be fixed fully. If I get the GH5 or G9, for video fixed focus for my stuff, done! No way in hell I am getting an S1 and S1R. The reason? Too big! Too expensive, and glass will be outrageous. Too heavy! But for Full Frame fans will get along fine with this, but Sony Canon, and Nikon may give the gallant fight. The ergonomics of Panasonic are so darn good. Bodies built like outdoor hammers, and 5 axis stabilization, and no hobbling like Canon does on video mode. No mental ergos of Sony, and Nikon is the least offensive to me as I grew up more on Nikon so bias there. Panasonic can not screw people with the GH5 because they did such a great job. I will defect if Panasonic kills the G9 or GH5. I love your reviews Gordon. Most sensible of the lot. This is VIDEO--why all the obsession with AF?!? and pixel peeping? MF and the tools for MF are much more important than AF in video. If AF were more important and better in video Hollywood would be using it. I understand. AF is essential and a real benefit in street photography. But it is nothing but a crutch for video that prevents your video from looking cinematic. It's for lazy people. Note: you fail to mention that the Peaking feature, which works well, completely vanishes and is of no practical use in video once the shutter button is pressed. This is ridiculous. In stills the shot ends with the click of the shutter. In video the shot only begins---and all the tools of focus and exposure are needed THROUGHOUT the duration of the VIDEO clip. How hard is that to understand? Unless that is corrected it will be a deal breaker for me. If you have great video, provide video oriented features. The way those features function for stills is neither sufficient nor acceptable for video.
@cameralabs

I agree to a point. Yes, a professional manual focus puller will always look best of all, but we can't all do that, and in some more casual environments, AF can be incredibly useful, especially if you have a small team - for example, I'm a team of ONE, so I need reliable AF. It's not laziness, it's simply that I am a one-man operation most of the time, and YT doesn't pay well enough for me to hire a focus puller.

@@nordic5490 Your comment is a non-sequitur on several levels. 1. This is not a camera the average soccer mom would use. You may have heard of the smart phone? It's got everything a soccer mom could want---why would she lug around the S1? 2. I have a Nikon Z---because it will enable me to shoot in RAW, it already shoots in 10 bit 422 on my ATOMOS. 3. I don't want a BMPCC because it has no IBIS, and I would only use a MFT sensor with a third party lens and a speed booster. 4. When you hand hold your camera with third party, MF only, prime lenses with practice you can focus pull with the best of them---yes, it's often not 10 bit or RAW, but your focus pulls with help your shots look filmic and not like somebody's home video, a la soccer mom.
