355hp to the wheels out of a 4.8 that’s amazing. I seen a kid here on KZbin with a 5.3 stage 4 cam pushing out 355hp to the wheels. You lost about 20% through the drivetrain. So 355hp +20% = 426hp you pushing at the crank.

Right! I'm super happy with it. My cam is just slightly larger than the btr stage 4 cam. Plus I have milled heads and the tbss intake, ect. But I was surprised it did so well. I've even had a few people argue with me, saying I was lied on the dyno results lol

A precent is not a good number really it's more like a flat rate for the drive train and then maybe like a 1% 2% because because I mean if you had one of those with a v6 making I don't know probably putting down like 100hp on the Dyno vs his at 355hp the losses are about the same

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Nice man, nothing wrong with that! the 4.8L is a stellar motor for high HP. Honestly it all depends what your wanting. If your long term goal is boost, then I'd just stay with the 4.8L. They handle abuse and boost REALLY well. Same goes for the 5.3L. The HP gains you would get from the swap really wouldn't even be worth the time. The gen III 5.3 makes between 285-310 from the motor. The gen III 4.8 makes 255-280. Its alot of time, effort, and money for only 5-50hp gains. If you want to stay NA, then I would do the swap to a 6.0L LQ9, that would actually be worth the time and money. The LQ9 makes 345hp. Not sure if you've seen any of my recent videos, but I did buy a 6.0 LQ9. Currently at the machine shop right now. Getting hot tanked, bead blasted, honed, new bearings, and new piston rings, getting gapped for a 200shot of now. So with the LQ9 and my current cam/mods. Im hoping for about 400-420hp to the wheels, and about 600hp on the nitrous. Also know with the little 4l60e, depending on your long term HP goals. You might wanna look at a 4l80 swap for boost. Or lightly building the tranny if your NA. Because they are junk trannys and don't last long under more HP. Hope that helps.
@xryzerr
@xryzerr 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the information bro it helps a lot, I was thinking of staying NA since this truck would be my daily and I just want to have some fun with the truck nothing to crazy going the forced induction route, so im in between saving up money to buy a lq9 6.0 or just build my 4.8. How much did it cost you to tear down the 6.0 and do everything on it ?
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Obviously not winning alot of races with the 4.8 lol. But with a mild cam. It makes it super fun!! I also had the tuner and remove torque management, So there is zero throttle response delay. Its a little harder on the tranny though. I looked for 4 months to find an LQ9. The LQ4 6.0 motors are super common, but they don't make as much power because of the dished pistons. I ended up having to pay 1,200$ for the complete LQ9 motor. And all the machine work i stated above is $1,000 out the door.

@Drunken_Hamster
@Drunken_Hamster 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheKingCoopa I certainly wouldn't go below 285/40r22, myself. If I couldn't fit that under a truck, I'd MAKE it fit. Saw one guy on the Ram forums do a full tub to fit a 32" tall tire (like a 305 on a 22) under a 5/7 drop. That was pretty cool. Anyway, if you're set on these wheels, that's what I'd do when I went 4/6, I'd make this size or the 40's fit. Only thing I'd change was maybe a 10 wide week for a straighter/micro-stretched sidewall. Dunno. Also, when you do a C-notch, you should look up structural integrity maps of them before you do it. @TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 7 ай бұрын
Hey, sorry for the late reply. Its probably because its a hub dyno. Every dyno is different. It's all just numbers, it doesn't really mean anything. A dyno is a tuning tool, and that's it, other than that its just ment to hurt your feelings haha. On my new setup, I swapped to a built LQ9 6.0L, Frankenstein stage 2 heads, massive camshaft, 3800 stall, 10% under drive pulley, e fans, no A/C, with drag wheels, and it made 430whp. All those bigger mods, just to gain 70hp seems pathetic haha. It makes 580whp on nitrous. But its all just numbers. Power to weight ratio and 1/4mi times are the real numbers to worry about. Yea, your 6.0L and my old 4.8L made the same numbers, but I garentee that you would spank it in a race. Don't get caught up in the dyno number game, its always a lose, lose scenario.

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, sorry for the late reply. The camshaft is gonna give you the best bang for your buck and it will really wake the truck up. Everything else is just supporting mods. But i would do Long tube headers, and 4.10 gears. Gears won't necessarily add horsepower but it will help the low end acceleration, Which will make the truck a lot quicker. Also keep in mind, anytime you do performance mods like airflow or fuel changes a tune is highly recommended. Or else you're not truly maximizing the power of your cold air intake and exhaust. If you do get a tune you can have them remove the speed limiter and torque management. Removing torque management will give you 0 throttle response delay, but it is harder on your transmission though. If you were wanting even more power you could always do NNBS/TBSS intake manifold swap, With a 90mm throttlebody, and some 243 heads.

Hey, it would be considered at the wheels. Technically with a hub dyno, it reads the hp coming off the hub/axle. He can accommodate the rotating weight of the wheel/tire in the software. If the engine was on an engine dyno stand, with no tranny. That would be considered crank HP.

@@TheKingCoopa sorry, I guess all of them. What would be a good cammed, lowered setup for daily driving year round (in the Midwest)? And if I only want maybe 350 hp do I need to build the transmission?
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Oh boy haha. So I have a 226/234 112+4 crane cam. Which is slightly larger than the BTR stage 4 truck cam. Pretty mild cam, and I still daily it haha. Most camshafts past 215-220 duration, you will probably want to go with a little larger stall/tourqe converter. You can't go wrong with a BTR stage 2 or 3 truck cam. Super common camshafts and everyone loves them. Great for a daily. For the lowering kit, id recommend a 2/4 drop. Thats what I have on the truck in this video. Easy to install, cheap, and still rides great. Anything past that you will want to C notch the frame so the axle has room to travel. I'm currently going to a 4/6 drop right now. The 2/4 you can still fit some fat tires, and drive it offroad/snow with no issues. (I made a video drifting mine in the field, then smashed the front end lol) If you buy a 1500, it will come with the 4l60e transmission, which is complete junk. Yes you may only make 350 hp, but at the crank it is around 400-410ish that is getting pushed through that tranny. Those transmissions don't have a high rating. So at some point it will eventually go out on you. If you buy a 2500, those usually came with the 4l80e unless you find an 8.1/Alison combo. But they didn't make the 2500 in a single cab short bed combo, if thats what your wanting. But those 4l80 trannys are ALOT stronger.
@lucasgiunta6848
@lucasgiunta6848 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheKingCoopa I've heard that 4l60es are garbage so I figured I'd get your opinion. The body style of the truck isn't a huge deal to me so would it be beneficial to get a 2500 or build up a 4l60e/swap a 4l80e into a 1500
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
It would be cheaper to buy a 2500 with the 4l80, then doing the swap into the 1500. 2500s are better for towing, and have stronger/beefier parts on them. But they are alot heavier compared to a 1500. I know you said daily, not a race truck. So I'd look for a 2500 with the 6.0L motor. The 8th digit of the vin number is the engine code. U is an LQ4. N is an LQ9. You want the N, because they have flat top pistons and make more power, but they can be kinda hard to find. The U is VERY common. I just bought an LQ9 6.0L to swap into my single cab.

I'm in the middle/end of my swap, down to the wiring, I'm wondering what getting a tune cost ? And if I used Holley Terminator X Max, do I still need to take have it tuned.
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, so my first initial tune cost me 300$ but That's with a well known tuner, anti came to me. The 1st tune took about 3 and a 1/2 hours. Some notifications like mine are very drastic, in the truck only idle for 5 minutes before it would follow the plugs. So I couldn't drive anywhere. They dyno cost was like 120, plus 80 for the extra tuning. Ended up being about 5 runs on the dyno and gained me an additional 30hp from more indepth tuning. So with a factory computer, there are certain limitations on them for the software they run, and the tuning. Terminator X is a standalone setup. So there's basicly no limitations, easier to tune, and you can basicly do whatever you want. Being that it is a fresh unit, it has no idea what modifications you have done, or even what motor is in it. So yes, it will still need a tune. Terminator X is primarily for when you wanna run crazy HP, full race truck build, engine swap not traditional to your factory harness, or doing an engine/tranny swap in something super old. Regardless it will still need a tune. Also know that we'll known tuners can be booked 2-4 months out. It's a long time to wait, but id rather have someone who knows what they are doing. Instead of a rookie blowing up my motor, trying to save 100$ on the cost of a tune. Hope that helps 🤘

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 4 жыл бұрын
Oh nice, gotta love the black on black SS 😎 so for a 3in lift, alot of the bigger name brands might not make a lift that small. (Fabtech, mcgaughys, full throttle suspenesion, etc.) I think they make a 6in lift and larger kits. I have a 2/4 mcgaughys drop on the black truck and fabtech lift on my white truck, both good kits. Some people might tell you to get lift keys, then crack them up to get the front end to 3in. Thats going to ride like trash, not always allowing your suspension to fully function. Its also going to cause alot of your front end parts to wear down faster, since there is extra stress on them. Ideally for lifting, your gonna want a kit that has aftermarket crossmembers in the front with lift spindles. Those crossmembers are going to drop your lower A arms and front diff down a few inches, which will allow your suspension to operate just like normal, but with your truck lifted. I know rough country sells a 4in lift lit, everything included for like 999$ they arnt the greatest, but still make decent lift kits. Then turn your torsion keys down just a few turns to give you the desired 3inches. That just my personal opinion. If you want to get lift keys, you can. They are definitely alot cheaper, but your ride quality is going to suffer. Also id stay away from doing a 3in body lift. Separating the cab from the frame 3in, is going to pull on your wire harness, brake lines, etc. So alot of it won't clip into factory locations on your frame. Somtimes it pulls the ebrake cable, and you can't even use that anymore. Body lifts arnt worth it IMO. I know thats alot of info, but hopefully it helps you out some. Just remember, you can't lift a Cadillac and expect it to still ride like a Cadillac. Lifting or lowering a vehicle is always going to effect the ride quality, just a matter of what degree and Quality parts you use.

Right on 🤘 yea, it will definitely need a tune. After i did all my engine mods, with my bigger injectors on the old tune, my truck would only run for about 5min before it would foul out the plugs haha. Plus playing around on the dyno, the tuner gained me an extra 30hp from my previous tune i had. But my rev limiter is set to 6700Rpms. And with the street/strip shift kit, I shift at 6500rpm on WOT. Thats with the built 4l60e.

@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Yea, 275hp seems a little off. What mods are you running? And whats the cam/stall? Depending on your cam, your leaving alot of hp on the table still, keeping it under 5200rpms. After about 7000rpms the rods will start to bend. Thats why we kept mine under 6700. But I have a car cam. They love high rpms, truck cams are more low end tourqe. My cam was still gaining power after 6700rpms too. But its at 226/234 112+4. Its slightly larger than the BTR stage 4 truck cam.

@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Oh okay, that makes more sense now. That larger stall is probably robbing a little bit of power, not a big deal. I think the only way to gain more power, if you didn't want to do more mods, would be increasing the rpms to like 6100 or 6200, and see where your cams power band dies off after. Not sure, all cams are different, you might be maxing that cam out at 5200rpms. But playing around with the tune might help you out too. If you havnt already, in the tune you could get the speed limiter removed. Also if you wanted, you could remove the tourqe management. It gives you instant throttle response, but its harder on your tranny

What’s your compression at with the 243 heads
@TheKingCoopa
@TheKingCoopa 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, honestly not sure. I had the heads milled .15. From what I've herd every .05 milled adds about .25 of compression. A stock 4.8 makes 9.4:1. So with the milled heads its probably close to 10.2:1
@lukemorgan3368
@lukemorgan3368 2 жыл бұрын
243 heads are right at 64.45 ccs for the head chamber volume (unmilled). I know my gen 4 4.8L is stock as of now and came with 243s from the factory. Every compression ratio calculator I’ve used online has put it around 9.2-9.29:1 with the factory .051 head gasket. Older 4.8s with the 706/862 heads were definitely higher CR because of the difference in head chamber volume. Considering many LS engines have their pistons anywhere from -.005 to -.008 out of the hole that number can very ever so slightly.

Id assume swap in the new ecu/pcm from the donor truck. The obs won't have the right electronics to control all of it.
