Diane. Always A+.........................My youth was spent in the Mammoth Lakes and June Lake area off of Old Mammoth Road. Those were the days when there was only a few ski lifts, no traffic, no condo's and few people. Travels to Convict lake with family brings back many wonderful memories. I've been able to recount these from your great content here. Thank you! Best!!!

Nice video, enjoyed your narration, bummer the wind messed up your stay and tent. Well you have memories from that trip. I been through it a few times myself and laughed it off with my friends that went with me. A bad night of camping beats a day at work anytime. You have wisdom and knowledge when to go next time. My favorite lake up there is Tioga Lake going into Yosemite, it’s a scary drive coming down the mountain so you got to be extra careful. Take care.

Sorry about the wind... But any time spent in the Eastern Sierra is worthwhile. Another great video. Thanks for sharing the history of Convict Lake. Visiting an area, especially one with an intriguing name, is much more special when you know the stories behind it.

Ahhh beautiful Convict Lake. My BMW motorcycle club rides up to Bishop every three or four years in late September or early October to see the fall colors. One year we stopped at Tom's Place and got sandwiches to picnic at Convict. It was a nice ride on Crowley Lake Drive, staying off 395 as long as possible, with little wind. When we turned onto the road toward the lake we felt some wind but not bad. By the time we got to the picnic tables at the Fisherman's Trail to eat no one took their helmets or jackets off. It was soooo cold & windy if you sat your lunch bag down, WHOOSH it was gone down the road. Don't ask how I know this. The first weekend of October is Hot Rod & Custom Car weekend in Bishop. That is a fun weekend IF you can get a room. Nice video & music Diane. I especially enjoy the still shots at the end of every video !!

Oh wow, that sounds like an awesome adventure! I love those side roads up on the 395. I will have to look into the classic car show! I wont need a room, I can stealth camp in my car.

The eastern sierras are very dangerous early & late in the year. My father almost drowned at twin lakes in Bridgeport 20 years ago. His boat flipped over in may when the ice is barely breaking up. His body cramped up completely within a few min luckily a boat was in the area & was able to save him b4 he went under

Thank you for the beautiful video of a special place, but I’ve a little correction for you. The tragedy in 1990 took a total of seven lives which included three teenagers, two camp counselors and two firefighters. There’s a good book about the incident by writer Richard Mallard. The following words are on a plaque at the lake. “On February 19, 1990, a tragedy occurred at this site. Three boys from a local youth camp fell through the ice. Two counselors, David Myers and Randy Porter, U.S. Forest Service employee Clay Cutter, and Long Valley Fire Captain Vidar Anderson sacrificed their lives while attempting a heroic rescue. This plaque is dedicated to those brave men.”

Sorry about the wind. Frequent campers will eventually get blown out somewhere. My worst experience was at Tuttle Creek BLM campground. Thought the trailer was going to roll...it didn't but trailer tongue did come off the jack base. BOOM!
@DanielRamirez-wn7ir Жыл бұрын
Actually 7 people passed away in 1990. 4 teenagers fell thru the ice. 2 counselors went in after the teens .a forest service worker went to attempt to save the. As well as volunteer fire rescuer. They were able to save one of the teens but unfortunately the 3 of the 4 adults perished attempting the rescue. One adult was able to survive after falling back into frozen water. He had to head but his way through the ice. In the winter it freezes solid from November to April

Yeah, until your tent fails. We would have stayed but there was a 90% chance of rain and it woulf not have been good with a hole in the tent

The problem was your camp spot was right in the open meadow. If you can find a spot near the streams which are usually covered by trees you won’t have that problem. Reserve your spot in advance and avoid the open meadow.
@OutandAboutWithDiane2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that was the only one open. I did reserve a few months in advance

@@OutandAboutWithDiane I know the feeling. It’s honestly 50/50 chance to find a good spot at the campground so I usually spend the day at the lake and disperse camp over by the hot springs. Highly recommend you check them out if you haven’t yet! Looks like it was a fun trip over all so thank you for the video!
