Thankyou as always Rob, what a great mate you have in Nick he has a great presence but dont steal your thunder. I have done quite a bit of camp cooking and ruined plenty on too hot fires, I know ya cant take the kitchen sink with you if your hiking but I often use a foot square piece of steel checker plate on my rocket stove in the back yard this stops me burning the crap out of everything, I was also spoilt in B C cause I bought a little $600 camper that fitted on the back of my ford ranger and as you know there are no shortage of logging roads and crown land and lakes to visit in and around Kamloops. Sorry if I ramble on but dry and comfortable beats roughing it even when I was young, great that you have some wild places where you are that you can access, good luck to ya both

Hi Rob! I was wondering when you were going to do a more in-depth review of the Woodsman? In particular I was interested in how you think it compares with one of Roger’s custom knives, as I don’t see me being able to afford one of those in the near term…
@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
It's coming, seriously great value I wouldn't hesitate buying one. A R.Harrington woodsman in O1 would probably set you back three times what the Casstrom costs.

Hi Rob, still following you guys. 12:50 Those balls you were doing are a common dish in SA, called "vetkoek", or fat cakes. Either savoury, with curry mince filling, or sweet, with butter and jam (usually apricot or peach). Delicious, especially the savoury, and one of my favourites! [Very bad for my health I'm reliably informed, and which I shall ignore, of course!] By the way, have you ever done a video on your "parallel fire"? I'm intrigued, as I've not come across it before. We just do it the normal boring way, or if we feel experimental, and adventurous, the upside down fire. If not, please do one, with your rationale, as it looks very effective. 17:15 Meat balls - ahhh yes! A good ol' standby. My favourite way is with plenty of sliced mushrooms, and some sort of tomato, with a bit of thickening for a gravy. Delicious. If I have to use a flat pot or pan, I tend to flatten the balls a bit, like a thick patty - just easier to get them cooked without the bottoms burning. BTW, the morning fire was real "chuck-'em"! 🤣🤣

Curried mince filling sounds like a plan!

Great vid as usual. Cooking with wood is always tricky, the first batch out is always the trial batch.....its like pancake day, the first couple aren't great. I'd say turn the bread before the first side is done as it'll keep cooking when it's turned - but you know that! I've ruined plenty of meals on an open fire and yours was perfectly OK. I love that hungry feeling when you're outdoors, it's not like being hungry at home. Is there much difference between Casstrom models? They all seem pretty similar - good knives mind, I like their handle geometry. Those Gransfors splitters are the business 👌.
@RobEvansWoodsman2 жыл бұрын
It's been a while since I made the sweet balls , I should have flattened them more and cooked them less, in my Sweden videos from a few years ago they were perfect.

I’m interested in your thoughts on the Woodsman. I ended up buying one. Like yours, the scales are in bog oak. While this seems a very GB material, do you know where Casstrom sources theirs?
