Many years ago, I bought a Vango Tahoe 300. I chose it partly for the vestibule spaces and partly because it came with ten guy lines. However, after using it once, I added four guys of my own to open up more options to direct the tension where I wanted it. In one camping trip (in a campsite, because that tent is a heavy lump for packing), we had one night with winds gusting up to force 10. In the morning, I saw that one of my pegs had moved slightly. All the other tents on the site were in various stages of being put away or being blown across the campsite. I saw that you had your guy lines a good distance from the tent, but I might have been inclined to give them a little more tension before zipping the tent up for the night. As a general point, I try to get the guy lines as close as possible to horizontal, and as taut as I think the tent will tolerate. This seems to give the best resilience against a high wind.

I love these videos. I'm fascinated how people camp in a tent during thunderstorms and blizzards, and how they stay warm and secure. Especially with high winds. It seems this tent held up alright, but I would still want a stronger tent. I'd be afraid of a high wind tearing that thing apart.

Darrell Anderson strongest tent there is the hilleberg soulo. It would take one hell of a wind to wreck it. In which case you wouldn’t be out in that kind of wind 😉

Refreshing to show the other side of camping, strong winds, rain and storms. Have you ever considered the Primus Omni Fuel Stove ? I use this and simply fill up the fuel bottle with Aspen 4 fuel, which I purchase in 5ltr containers about £18. Much cleaner fuel than normal unleaded or ethanol fuel, virtually free from harmful benzine and hydrocarbons.

I've been a hill Walker for 30+ years and camped all my life (apart from when I'm not camping of course) and buy, try, test and sell my equipment as I go along through life. Like you I've made an few discoveries on the way. Had and sold many high end tents and sleeping bags and stoves of course. Love the fact you have a soto windmaster. I've had almost everything out there and it's got to be the best little stove at the moment. Had the mukka as well and normally have quite a few stoves on the go. The optimus polaris being my current multifuel option. Not had a hilleberg tent right enough, love your channel and will watch all your videos now. Thanks, Gordon

Encountered some terrible windy conditions last year on the Isle of Skye. We were on a camp ground at that point, wind speeds ~7bft and peaks up to 8bft. MSR Elixir couldn't be bothered by it. Several tents on the ground collapsed, those were the cheap Quechua ones. They are fine for decent weather but don't bring them to bad weather. 2 weeks of Scottish fall weather and no bent poles no rips (except for the gear shed) and no water in the tent. Even when on a budget: buy a decent tent or you'll regret it when the weather turns on you.

It was a tasty beverage actually Joss. I carry two sponges, one clean and one for mopping up dirty water and spillages. As for the tent it's still up to the job perfectly. Cheers again for watching mate

I've been through more sever condition on my last trail in Iran. the 1st lesson I learned is that never ever camp at the edges and cliffs since the wind up there is insane the 2nd lesson is: when you see that it is going to be a storm ahead, you have to pack up all your stuff including your tent and place them into your backpack and put on your wet prevention cloths and reestablish your camp far away from trees (unless you want the lightning strike or tree fall on you), a the place where the turbulence is less crazy. You can have look around you where the grass and rattling stuff around you is more calm. I personally go for a ramp where the ground not steep so you can sleep at ease.

well, lets say it, this place is defenatly NOT where you want to pickdown your tent :D Too much weather exposure on top hills boys ! Avoid those even when the view is amazing ;) Cheers and hike safely !

I'm a bit jealous everytime I see that hilleberg but I have to keep reminding myself that it's a 7lb tent. Lol! You must be nuts to lug a 7lb tent all the way up there. Still...

maybe you could use spare tent pegs to stabilise the stove outside, or cut a recess in the ground and press the canister in to hold it firmer? just a thought, i always forget something!

I also caught the fog on the mountain last Saturday. The rain has its charm, here in Spain there is a saying that says "to the mountain you have to go even if it's good weather" hahaha

I like that saying. We are not usually as optimistic about poorer weather conditions

Great video Paul, recently found your channel and really enjoying it! I’m thinking of getting the Helm 2 as I need space for 2 people, do you think it would have stayed in one piece in those winds?
@PaulMessner
@PaulMessner 5 жыл бұрын
The helm 2 is decent tent. It doesn't have as many guy out points as the Hilleberg so the larger panels can be exposed to wind. If it were me in the helm I would have pitched the tent in a more protected area. It is still a great tent and would serve you well for wild camping in the UK
