@quantok Same, had mine since the early 90's, have the gas adapter for it too.. damn good bit of reliable kit, works every time in all weather's so far, harder to start in the deepest of winter, but if you warm the meths 1st by having the bottle next to your body it's much much easier 👍

Jetboil for heating water. Trangia for proper cooking. Not used my jet boil for 5 years plus now. If you want to cook on a jet boil all the extra gear you bring is heavier and bulkier by far than a Trangia and WAY more expensive.

Hello from Finland! Top tip with your water during winter camping, just put a string around it and hang it around your neck, inside your jacket. With a spare water bottle put it in a woolly sock. If there's a lot of snow you can bury them in the snow too.

For ur cappuccinos sachet, to avoid lumps, add a lil bit of hot water to moisten the powder first, stir to make a slurry/paste b4 adding the rest. I use this method to combat the hydrophobic nature of cinnamon, (and cocoa powder) and to combine the coconut oil with the other ingredients b4 adding the rest of the hot water. It's something about breaking the surface tension and making a colloidal suspension or something like that 👍😝🤙

While I haven't done this sort of thing on my own outside of the army, I have always loved being out in the colder weather. I was in Estonia a in 2017-18 and did a cold weather course, ran by royal marines and the coldest it got was -32. The warmest I got was in the survival shelter. Nice long fire but no sleeping bag. It was brutal weather but what an experience. Definitely going to get in the peaks very soon.

Excellent vid Paul. I like the way you've paired up with Andy as well, and I think that this is the best way to go, as in this sort of extreme wild camping, having a companion means that you can keep an eye on each other. A very important safety aspect that could save a life if things went Pear shaped.

Tip for keeping coffee warm in that S2S mug.... it sits quite well inside the the 650 ml Lixada once you finished boiling the water. You can pop the lid on it as well when not drinking- creates a double wall. If i showed a pic, it would make more sense.

You are supposed to "spill" a little alcohol on the outer ring of the trangia burner and light that up for preheating. That is if it lights up in the first place anyways.

A few winters ago I had a winter sea kayak trip at this time of year up a sea loch on the Scottish West coast. Apart from having freezing fingers whilst pitching and taking down my tent, it was a brilliant experience. Minus 8 overnight. I had a Rab down bag and Exped Down mat, plus a foam mat. I also had an Alpkit bivvy bag. All inside an old but good Wild Country tent. The kit is what makes the winter camping trips fun rather than torture. I have loads of camping kit to cover Summer trips, depending on weather and how much faff I want each day when packing and unpacking the kayak. In winter, I find it easier to think of what I need as the basics of best bag and mats for insulation never change, and winter is the only time I don't take my Trangia gas stove. I revert to the Method version as even though it takes a while, it always goes. I have a second stove with fuel gel just in case. Learning what works for each individual is vital. Everyone has their own thermal comfort level but the main bits of kit which work are soon found out with a few nights out. Your meal sounded great. I like canned big veg soups as starter. Weight of cans doesn't matter much in the kayak, and the taste is much better. Main course is anything of the add water type. To keep my feet warm in the tent I have down slippers too, plus battery hand/feet warmers. That's only due to the kayak boots not keeping feet warm so I need to warm them up once into my evening clothes...from drysuit and thermals. I don't hill walk and camp. I agree that space is important on long winter nights. It's good to stretch out and have gear laid out.

To keep the hot drinks hot you really need an Thermos mug..I have an variety of brands of these which I even use at work as conditions are not much better than an rough winter camp at times...The one I use for camping is super slim lightweight and with an tight-fitting vacuum sealed lid it really does work and when closed it can be tossed around the tent without even the slightest risk of leakage or spill..I recommend these thermos mugs but just be really sure to get an good name brand then your guarunteed the drinks will stay piping hot for literally hours...

Your most beautiful video with the help of Mother Nature. And all the comforts of home. Camping in the snow is a lot less horrible than people think. I went with a group up to Yosemite National Park here in California two years ago, and I don't remember ever being cold. There was about 18" of snow on the ground, so we had a bit of work to clear the snow for the tents. The stars at night were the main event. I'll sound like Sir Patrick Moore in a moment.

Great video, entertaining and informative. I bought a wild country voyager in the days before Terra Nova, it was a fantastic tent that I had to retire after several decades of use, i may be a hilleberg fan these days, but i miss its simplicity and overall sleakness only achieved with an inner first tent. It was a brilliant tent to escape weather, or midges. An easy tent to cook in. And easily pitched in 5 mins.

For alcohol stove users: carrying your fuel in a recycled plastic spirits container (peppermint schnapps, in my case) against your body, underneath your insulation, guarantees a quick light-up, rapid bloom, and efficient water heating as well. Carrying your preheated water, and using a hot water bottle at night will save time and fuel as well as helping warm you in the process. For booties, I have found the ones without a built-in foam sole keep my feet warmest. My Feathered Friends (USA) booties have a separate waterproof shell with a tough, insulated sole of coated, slip-resistant heavy-duty fabric.

It's been decades since I last deliberately camped in sub-zero conditions. It's not the actual camping that's the problem it's the weight of the carry! Nowadays I stay in bothies. Not as warm but much more room and no fears about a storm sneaking in. Re the water bottle, on one of my winter camps I had an aluminium Sigg bottle crack open with the cold, since then I've always kept them inside the inner and wrapped inside a sock. Gas bottles (and batteries) come with me inside the sleeping bag (and wrapped in the other sock!). My coldest camp was new-year 1980/81(?) at -27C, 6 of us in the Lairig Ghru at Corrour Bothy.

Here in the US, in east Tennessee, we can't cook in tents because of black bears. They will tear a tent to bits if there are food smells inside. There were two black bear sightings in downtown Knoxville TN last week! There are many times I wish I could cook in my tent but it is not worth the risk.

Did you know your trangia burner has a built in preheater? There is a little trough around the outside of the burner which you pour in a little fuel and set it alight, this preheats the rest of the fuel and auto ignites the fuel when it's up to temp, it also warms the jets holes too.

Great watch Paul - as always. Love the Voyager. Mine is about 20 years old (no kidding). Last year I had to recondition it having forgotten I'd put it away damp a few months earlier. Although not quite cosmetically, functionally as good as the day I bought it (over in UK - an ex display - probably about 250GBP). Still my Go -To tent for anything other than super lightweight backpacking. Keep up the good work.

EPIC!... twinnies, same tent same boots, same mug same bowl, and also porridge for breakfast... Voyager is a great tnet but i find the poles can be a faff to get through the long and small channles and cant obviously pull them when get stuck and with scrunched up sleeve fabric if the poles do separate guarantee that fabric seats in the gap made with a loose tent pole joint. Porch is versatile to a degree but not really enough space for a back pack but then again in those temps would want all the gear possible in the tent out of elements as best as possible... havent seen you use this tent that much though Paul!? has it fallen out of favor in your collection?
