Camping in the SNOW without a tent - a challenging and rewarding alpine adventure

This has to be my most exciting and rewarding camping adventure so far! A Southerly storm came in just as I arrived at camp and brought with it heavy winds and sleet, which turned in to the most beautiful snow storm. It was a very challenging set up, and things did not go to plan, but it turned out to be better than I could have hoped for. A gorgeous sunset, warm campfire, and a still night camping out in the snow. The walk in was beautiful and the walk out absolutely magical, with the mountains covered in snow. I managed to find a wonderful spot near a high mountain lake (tarn). All in all this was a trip to remember forever.

Yes, tarn, that's correct. Thank you, I have been trying to improve on my thumbnail photos. I usually am so busy I completely forget to stop and take photographs for the thumbnail, so thank you for commenting on the contents and framing.

After 60 years of Backpacking on trips like yours, with only a Tarp I have yet to get tired of it... I use a small Sportsman Blanket which is aluminized on one side which acts like a Heat Reflector. I use a Toggle system with 300 Lb Test Waxed Trot Line or Fishing line, cheaper and stronger than that fancy looking Cord, to tie down the tarp after having four Tarps torn apart at the Gromets, which takes the stress off the Gromets in high winds and set the Tarp only 3 feet or less off the ground or Shoulder Height. For my fire I always build it about 3 foot away and with a 2-3 foot tall and wide Reflector behind it which has heated up the underside of the Tarp by as much as 30 degrees when the temperatures were in the 30's. I also take full advantage of the Vegetation by avoiding cleared out areas which seem to attract the Wind and hide deep in the Green..

Yes you are so right, the Southern Alps in New Zealand have wet forest in the valleys but are rugged and unforgiving on the tops.

Oh yes indeed. I am doing something a bit different and unfamiliar on my next trip so there is lots of practice going on for that one. I am reminding myself of the old scout motto 'be prepared', rather than the New Zealand saying 'she'll be right' (which means 'somehow it will work out').

I liked your tarp setup Cathy when you finally got it up. I am loving tarps more and more watching your videos. Love tents as well. This is my favourite of yours so far. I had to laugh with you when I saw you were just like me sometimes when trying to figure out what to do when setting up the tarp, and forgetting, and changing your mind. Made me love you all the more. So human. Of course, I'm Canadian and used to extreme cold, so I got as kick out of the shorts. Loved it. And the landscape is so beautiful. Love all the snow. We used to get tons of snow here, but climate change has left us this past winter with only 3 days of snow the whole winter. Didn't even need my boots. Lol. I think that is great that you enjoyed that part. Nothing in my videos in 'scripted' and all happens as it happens but to some degree I have pre-thought through what I think will happen.. and then ... something does not go to plan and I have to sit under the trees and have a cuppa. So in a way that was the most natural and authentic part.

You are amazing for keeping it all real in the set up process and including it all in the final video. Trying to recreate a tarp set up under stress and impending weather is a true challenge. Kudos to you for taking a moment to collect and have a cup of hot tea. Thank you Aaron! That is such a nice thing to hear. That is what these trips are for me too, a bit of peace and escape, even if it seems odd that I would be at peace in such weather, I really am. I think it must be that natural human instinct to 'nest'. When I have a shelter up, a warm fire, and a meal in my belly it feels like I have won the lottery of life, it really does, and nothing else matters in that moment.

Hi again from Sacramento, California here in California, we do have black bears, mountain lions, snakes etc. But they absolutely do NOT scare me and I LOVE them. It is the humans that are dangerous and scary!!!

I would like to think I would be the same if I lived with those animals and grew up understanding them. On yes,humans, eeeek, so much less predictable.
