The jump from normal ammo to AP ammo is huge due to the armor resistances that the biters develop. If you can build AP ammo and are not, then you are throwing away about 90% of your potential damage.

Your speech about wanting a deeper understanding about blueprints and designs is something I didn’t do when I got into the game, I just looked at designs and used them myself. But from now on I’m going to completely avoid blueprint designs and just try and do things myself, and hopefully I’ll cruelly enjoy the game more when I do that :)
