What's concerning is it shows starvation on right handers even below 1 G. This could be seen in autox too where transitional forces I've seen creep over 1 G but it's more instantaneous than constant.. How did subaru botch the oil return in a motor meant for intro high performance yet Mazda and honda design their engines with + 1.3g capability
@Ariskot007 Жыл бұрын
Well, I don't know wehere do you live but here in Europe the Subaru engines are legendary due to their ability to seize themselves up in no time. Especially the 2,5 litres in STI's and 2 litre diesels. So it is no surprise for me that they botched up another engine as well.
@russelljacob7955 Жыл бұрын
I am actually surprised this issue hasnt been resolved. People are not thinking physics. If it was just oil pickup, problem would have been solved long ago. The issue in my curiosity in the situation points me to the timing cover. We must think physics. Pump still puts out same. It is a linear pressure drop, so not sucking air. The problem I see? The oil pumps to filter housing on extreme left side. On a higher G right turn? The length of the feed to crank and onto right side of engine has to fight that hydraulic head which coincides with where oil pressure sensors are. Path of least resistance. Oil primarily will follow the left channel return. Want to fix the issue? Need either flow restrictors so fluid needs to keep to the right bank which will still have a head pressure loss or a new timing cover to centralize the oil filter. Third option is if the cover is designed like a manifold so all oil flow out of filter housing goes to a central branch, and then off to left and right ensuring bottom end always has the priority path vs left head priority. Rest is stopgaps to compensate, but doesnt solve the issue.
@DragonKnightX127 ай бұрын
A big part of it is the engine layout. In a Boxster oil is going side to side, instead of just up and down like a Inline 4. Porsche solved this problem by adding scavenging pumps and pickups that take the excess oil back into the system. That being said Honda and Mazda have their own issues. ND1 trans blows up on the track. Honda still hasn't fixed the overheating issue with the 2.0T, that can cause it to melt internals when pushing hard on the track. GR Corolla has overheating issues too. And you can probably actually blame Toyota, because it was the guy that developed the MKV Supra that was in charge of both Gens of the 86/BRZ. Kind of funny too how when GR races the 86, they put the turbo 3 cyl from the GR Yaris in it. Lmo They don't even want to use the Boxster engine they insisted it had to have.

Bare in mind just because you register a dip in pressure still, it is still helping as the accumulator is continuing oil flow through the engine and pressure gradually falls off as the piston pushes oil volume out. So you're maintaining oil volume as well as pressure.

The pressure drops, and Toyota being c*nty about shelling out for warranty coverage (and neither automaker seeming to be developing a solution on the production side) all pushed me away from this car. And I had a 2015 BRZ from new for years. So I snagged a used 370Z and haven’t looked back.

Here's a thought...just let the engine pop and upgrade to a Honda K series engine for more power and endless reliability plus you get the bonus of a great sounding engine. Thank me later.

Decent plan. We might choose a different motor just to be different.

The accumulator will lower the engine power because it will need to fill the tank right after usage
@AnsixAuto Жыл бұрын
That's untrue.

Well, may be as it is true that it takes energy to refill. My thought on a positive displacement pump what would happen is that oil pressure will drop back to the remaining pressure in the accumulator until refilled, that is up to the tertiary valve. The key a proper discharge and refill rate.

the fact that you (the consumer) has to fix a design flaw made by the car manufacturer, just confirms that this car is badly made. I am glad I bought a 2020 gt86 with still 2 yrs warranty left instead if this shit box

Now if you could just fix Toyota using other company's engines.

Ty for the input. Subaru should step up and make it stock equipment. They, SUBARU, aren't starving - (they leave that to their vehicle engines) Cars are as much as houses, used to be, not so long ago. Making excuses for not doing the right thing on a RACE INPSIRED INTRODUCTION car, is NOT the way to treat LOYAL customers. As previously stated, It Shouldn't even be an issue. PERIOD.

Just going to say what so many are thinking. This shouldn't even be an issue. Subaru owes everyone a fix. Simple as that. Design flaws should be remedied by the manufacturer, not the consumer. Very disappointed this even a thing.

The only way to fix oil pressure drops is to stop using the boxer engine completely and Subaru probably isn't going to do that. The only mitigation is with special tools like a dry sump, which is what Porsche has done ON VERY SPECIFIC MODELS, specifically the ones meant to be raced. That doesn't make sense for 99.99% of Subaru owners who never see a track, and not even 99% of BRZ owners who never hit the sustained Gs required with the stock tires.

@aesir0784 I don't think people want to pay an extra $500 on every Subaru for a problem that doesn't exist except for literally 5 people who raced their BRZs too hard. The same can be said for Porsche, they aren't starving yet they don't put a dry sump except for special models.
