Hey mate in my experiencein seeing pros to first timers polish is 2000 and 3000 is enough. But using them for double the time spent on the previous grit is important. Also spending more time machine polishing with slower arm speed. Hope this helps.

Used to use megs 105 and 205 years ago found them reasonably good as an amateur but just upgraded to new bayt 1 step and it is a very good product with a foam pad for 1500 and finer

@snail415 2 жыл бұрын
If you can access and afford the latest versions of Megs 105/205 (110/210) give them a shot. 3D One is also so good that it can replace them both. The only issue is time. In a shop, I believe a more dedicated compound (and 2 steps) is faster. M110 cuts so well you can see it cutting each rotation, but for a one-step that might be overkill on a newer car. 3D One takes a while but finishes-down like butter. Zero dust, infinite work time.

C P Palm Sanders have. 10 mm & 5 mm as well as a 2.5 mm stroke sander that is ultra fine sanding that I use with 1500 grit sandpaper with a interface soft foam sanding pad then I polish with compounds and use a fill in glaze there used to be a product years ago called liquid ebeny it was black in colour and worked great best fill-in glaze I ever found really brought the color to life and even richined the color I haven't seen that glaze for close to 50 years but it was the best you could buy never had a swirl mark at all the color really came to life one it was polished and let's say the color was red and you used liquid ebony it was like the color became more true depth was outstanding I used to use it for a lot of acrylic laquer paint. . But like all good chemicals are taken off the markets just like Depont Imron polyurethane's the shine would last forever and never see a stone chip gas and oils would not touch it... More like an aircraft paint or boat paint they have it in the states but not in Canada but the formula has been changed its not the same just like epoxy primers today are crap ... Great job like the color & flake

Why didn't you use the DA to sand, why did you use a pneumatic air tool to do the sanding?
@hoagiemoto
@hoagiemoto 4 ай бұрын
I've used my Porter Cable DA for years. I have that same exact microfiber pad you used on the DA, it's not bad. I tried the Amazon SPTA purple wool pads recently and they blow away the Meguairs red, Menzerna red, Lakewood Heavy Cut Foam and even the Lakewood microfiber. Durability isn’t as good at the others though. I tried compounds like Presta, Menzerna Ultra Cutting, Poorboys SS1 & SSR2 with all of them. I just ordered a Lakewood Purple wool pad to try out tomorrow. Maybe I need to try some of that 3D or invest in a rotary also!

Great rundown. Totally concur with your approach. That 3D is great stuff. I’ve also had a lot of success with Meguiar’s M110 (newer than M105), as well as Griot’s Fast Correction Cream (which might not be available to you). A lot of the outcomes have to do with the pad you choose. A high-quality microfiber pad (like Meg’s) or even a wool pad and a rotary will cut really fast. Any of the aforementioned compounds do well with dusting, but 3D is easily the best in that arena. 3D One is excellent for the finishing stage, but takes a while. The sanding stage is where I think the real make-or-break of the effort is. Getting that wrong will make polishing 10X harder to save. Anyhow, you said all of that, but I just thought I’d second all of it from across the water.

I also sand fresh paint and use 3D 510 with a DA. The guy who sells me my compounds asked why i dont use a rotary since it cuts better. I told him the DA cuts better, and he told me its because of the thin pad, and that the big wool pad sucks up more product, and if i use more product on the wool pad it will cut better than the DA. What do you think?

if on a budget can I use a 6" Orbital sander with pads and polish to polish Harley gas tank and fenders?
@andrewleonard9257
@andrewleonard9257 2 жыл бұрын
Great info. What grit would the compound be equivalent to? I'm guessing that would depend on the pad and the pressure applied. I'm also curious as to how compound polishing compares to wet sanding with very fine grits. Say 3000 and finer. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each method?
@customspraymods
@customspraymods 2 жыл бұрын
The compound is diminishing so it starts coarse and gets finer as it’s used. That’s why the finish from the one step is so good.
@andrewleonard9257
@andrewleonard9257 2 жыл бұрын
@@customspraymods I see! That's interesting. So instead of being like a particular grit number, compound and polish is more like a range? So is compounding faster than wet sanding with 2 or 3 rising grit numbers?

@@andrewleonard9257👍 in my opinion it is. I’d say this video proves it.
@andrewleonard9257
@andrewleonard9257 2 жыл бұрын
@@customspraymods A side-by-side comparison could prove it, but I also trust your opinion. I guess I'm just curious as to why painters and detailers stop wet sanding at 1500-3000 grit, and start liquid sanding instead, when sanding discs are available up to at least 10000 grit.
@snail415
@snail415 2 жыл бұрын
3D has good details on their website. Should be able to cope with 1000-1200 grit scratches given the right pad, speed and pressure. 3D ACA520 is what you want for the 2500-3500 grit stuff.
