Today we will look at the Spanish languages in the Philippines. We will explore the only Spanish spoken in Asia as a native tongue. Did you know that there are some Spanish speaking Filipinos living in cities like Zambonga City, by many considered the Latin city of Asia,and Cavite City. Their language is more like a Spanish Creole. This video is part of the series of Spanish compared to other Romance languages.
The comparisons will be the following:
Filipino Tagalog vs. Spanish
Zamboangueño vs. Spanish
Caviteño vs. Spanish
We will look at how similar and different these languages are compared to Spanish.

I am a Taiwanese learning Tagalog in Manila. I think it’s easier for Spanish speakers to learn Tagalog. There are a lot of Spanish words, especially nouns and adjectives in their speaking. Things like colors, furnitures, places, months, weeks, numbers, and more. The verbs might only be the part you can not understand. And you might also not understand by reading because they have different spellings to Spanish, but they really sound similar when listening. Like traBaho=work, Gwapo =handsome, eskuwelahan=school, Kotse=cars, ... a lot more.

convospeak I don’t actually speak Spanish.. I learned French before but not fluent 😅. I think French is kind close to Spanish. Like travaille(French)=trabajo(Spanish) = work. I also know some friends who majored in Spanish literature in Taiwan. When I learned some Tagalog words which sound like Spanish, I usually asked them.

I'm a Zamboangeña and our language has already been recognized by some latin countries, because it boggles their mind that our language is a Spanish creole with a mix of Italian, malay, Filipino, and English with the accent of Portuguese.

I'm a Zamboangueño Chavacano native speaker. I work in a call center for an american company, and I do receive calls from Spanish customers from the states that could barely speak english, but they do understand. I let them speak in Spanish, and I completely understand them. Sometimes when they don't understand the word in english, I say it in chavacano for them to understand. 😊

Spanish should be restored as one of the official language in the Philippines, so that Filipinos will learn history without relying on English translations (mostly biased against Spaniards) and to communicate with Spaniards and Latin Americans in globalized world. Bringing back Spanish language in the Philippine educational system (from pre-primary until college) will provide additional loanword source for Philippine languages in contemporary contexts instead of relying with English (a non-phonetic language unlike Spanish).

Just study Spanish language yourself and do not wait for the government to do something, because they won't restore it not even in a hundred years. Especially how much Filipinos put English to the pedestal to the point that they would raise monolingual English-speaking kids. While learning Spanish, it's enjoyable to read some Philippine historical texts written in Spanish, it will greatly help you.

8:38 Tagalog is an Austronesian language, so it's more so related to sister languages of Phillipines and most languages of Indonesia. Spanish belongs to the Italic branch of the Indo-European family, so it's more related to the languages of Europe (besides Uralic languages)

@@brynhard Ilokano, they were able to hold on to their native Austronesian language roots. Compared to other Filipino dialects were it is heavily influenced by spanish. That's why it's quite unique compared to other Filipino dialects.

Basically Zamboangueño chabacano is around 70% Spanish words plus 30% mixture of the other dialects in the south like Visayan, etc. Caviteño chabacano on the other hand is 70% Spanish words and 30% Tagalog words. I am a Zamboangueño but I am able to converse with a Caviteño in chabacano and we fully understand each other.

Filipino or Tagalog has many spanish words but i think spanish speakers cannot understand the Tagalog grammars. Old Tagalog for understand is unawa but the spanish word incorporated in Tagalog is intindi from entender.

Mga = Mangá = Los/Las = The (plural) Ang = El/La = The (singular) Mangá -- 'ng' is one sound. In the old days they would write it as mañgá to join the 'n' and 'g'. Or 'mga' for short. Manggá -- is mango. The old way of writing Filipino/Tagalog (as well as the other languages and dialects I believe) looked phonetically more like Spanish. Filipino uses accent marks (á, à, â) but it's used more for educational purposes and maybe official documents.

Filipino here, we do have some cultural similarities to the Spanish due to their brute invasion of my country. However we cannot be considered hispanic or latino, unless you are talking about Zamboanga or the few Filipinos that mixed with the Spanish. Otherwise we are Asian.

Chavacano has most wprds from spanish but the grammar is of a local dialect of hiligaynon.i really am not sure how old this creole is but its atleast 100yrs old or more.and it keeps on evolving injecting more amd more local words and english wprds into it.

"mga" is an abbreviation for "manga" (pronounced as [ma-nga] or [mang-a]). "mga" is the marker word placed in front of nouns to show the plural form. For example: "tao" [ta-o] = singular form of human or person; "mga tao" = many humans or many persons = people. "ang mga bisikleta" = the bicycles. "mga suhestiyon" = suggestions = "mga mungkahì" (mungkahi is from Tagalog and means the same as suhestiyon which is adapted from English. "mga mesa" = tables "ang araw" could mean "the day" or "the sun"; "mga araw" = "the days" because there is only one sun.

Tagalog uses tagalog conjugation of Spanish and English words. Listen for that. One word they use is "gastar" but you usually hear "ga-gasta" which I think is a past tense. Sometimes they put an "I-" in front of the Spanish and English verbs. And you hear "kasi" a lot (casi). "mga" makes the next word plural.

I think chavacanos can understand spanish more than the other way around. Once we figure out how spanish conjugate the verbs we get the idea. And we know english sentence structure which is similar to spanish. But soanish don't know filipino sentence structure. Some of the things we say could be backwards. Im studying spanish right now. Estudio espanol todos los dias. Me encanta el idioma espanol, es muy interesante

I recommend you review other languages of the Philippines. In Bicol, we use words like "mientrastanto", "jovenes", "paz y orden", and "para mientras".

Out of the 178+ languages of the philippines, a native spanish speaker like convospeak, can only understand chavacano, because it is the only language in the philippines that is based on spanish, all the rest are part of the austronesian language family, which convospeak will never understand, he will rate it as korean or almost korean.

I'm a Filipino and when I worked in Saudi Arabia in 2007, I was surprised to hear spanish words that we practically use in my dialect Hiligaynon (one of regional languages in the Visayas with lots of Spanish words) and also words in Tagalog like Sabon (soap) and Bantalon (jeans) and more.. then I eventually knew that these words are actually Arabic that became spanish words during the Spanish-Arab Conquest and then was spread to Philippines during the Spanish Era. It was amazing to now the evolution of words like the Arabic word alsukar (sugar) which became azúcar (sugar) in spanish then Asukal (sugar) in Tagalog and then Azukarera in my dialect HIligaynon which means a milling company for sugar. Maybe you can make a video of Arabic Words that was loaned to Spanish hten spread out to many Hispanic/Latin countries with different meanings in those areas :)

I speak Cebuano from Davao. And I know I count in Spanish and the months and weeks also in Spanish. I didn't even know it was Spanish. Now I live in Manila and uses that language everyday for the last 13 years of my life. Both language have Spanish loan words. There are some they used the same words. Like the name of the day and numbers. If I used the numbers and weekly names I learned as a natitive Cebuano speaker here, they wouldn't understand. They know it is Spanish but they can't fully grasp which is which.

Tagalog is the native Language of the People in Manila and provinces south of Manila (And further down to Palawan). In its pure form (Like in literature) it is completely void of spanish and english influences. You are referring to the "Filipino" Language which is based on Tagalog but has extensive borrowing from Spanish and English. The News anchor is speaking in Filipino where it is extremely common to code switch Between native Tagalog-English-Spanish.

Mga is pronounced as MANGA. In old Tagalog ortography it is written on how it is pronounced. "Mga" is plural indicator por ejemplo: mga soldao = los soldados, mga muchacha = las niñas/chicas, mga día = los días.

That's because Tagalog is not even an Indo-European language, like Spanish and English. It belongs to the Malayo-Polynesian family of languages, native to the Philippines, with no historical connection to the former. It was already spoken there before the Spanish takeover of the archipelago on the 16th century. Caviteno and Zamboangueno, on the other hand, are dialectal varieties of Chavacano, which is itself a Spanish-based creole from the Philippines. Other varieties of Chavacano are Cotabateno, Castellano Abakay, Ternateno, and Ermiteno, all with varying degrees of mutual intelligibility with the Spanish language.

A language thats kinda spanish is Hiligaynon. Iloilo specifically Jaro is an old spanish town. Similar words are siya (silla) kama, pwerta (puerta), lamesa, and we also count in spanish uno dos tres dyes syen mil.

Your choice of newspaper was a tabloid. Informal / slang is very prevalent in those types of newspapers so I don't think you really were able to get a good grasp of Filipino (Tagalog). News reported on TV is done in a mix of English and Filipino (Tagalog), except for "The World Tonight" which is done in English.

Hello convospeak. This is not to criticize. I just wanna clarify that Filipino language is actually different from Tagalog. Many foreigners and even locals have been confused about our national language. They thought that tagalog and filipino are the same and they also thought that when we say filipino we already are referring to the tagalog dialect but it should not be because they are different. It is maybe because it happened that our national language was being replaced 3 or 4 times if I could still remember. It happened that our national language became the Tagalog, Pilipino and not long enough changed again into Filipino which is what we have right now. Hence, the Tagalog video that you have used was not actually a pure tagalog but rather a Filipino language wherein we tend to mix the influenced of spanish, tagalog and other different language and dialects that we already adopted or adapted . If your going to refer to a Tagalog, I suggest you have to find or sort for a pure tagalog video our any materials and we should also consider what type of Tagalog because there are different varieties of tagalog also. For instance, the Tagalog variety of Batangas province is different from Manila, Laguna, Cavite, bulacan and from other province that speak Tagalog but I think that is difficult to find. It is because we filipinos already tend to mix up different languages and dialects a the same time. Anyways, we appreciate your effort of including our Tagalog language in your video which is also helpful for those who aren't familiar yet with our language and its relation to spanish language. thanks and God bless! 😊🤗

The reason Filipinos use a lot of english words is because the United States helped free the Philippines from Japan during WW2 and helped the Philippines restructure their government and were there for at least 50 years. The Philippines absorbed a lot of American culture and words, its the most freshest foreign language in Filipino history plus the government was patterned after US government.

there was a video that I watched and it mentioned that it was a conscious effort from the Spanish government back then to preserve the many (, hundreds) of languages in the Philippines rather than enforce the Spanish language because of the bad reputation that Spain incurred because of the atrocities Mexicans faced when they were forced to learn Spanish.
