Can a Sports Car Company Make an SUV? / 2024 Lotus Eletre S Review

The 2024 Lotus Eletre is going places Lotus has never gone before. This is an all-new luxurious 591HP EV SUV from a company known for making lightweight 2-door sports cars. Starting at £104,500 UK (Pricing for the U.S. is not out yet), the Eletre S is a box of first steps for Lotus. The 105kWh battery pack can propel you 370 miles between charges, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the Dolby Atmos stereo and (should you option them) pseudo-suede seats.
Is the world ready to buy an electric luxury truck from a brand known for anything but? Does the driving experience live up to the spec sheet? Is it still “a Lotus”?
*The Eletre S starts at £104,500 in the UK. Pricing for the U.S. is not out yet.
** I did not have a spec sheet for this car so I didn’t do a detailed options breakdown.
Lotus provided travel/room/board to Norway and a significant amount of b-roll for this review.

I worked with Lotus during the Bahar days, and part of the team were guys who worked with Colin directly back in the day. When questioned about the SUV, the quote from them was "Colin would have sold main battle tanks if it allowed him to piss money away at the racetrack." Who cares what they sell, as long as it's profitable so they can still make fun stuff for enthusiasts. Nicely done video Zack; I enjoyed it.

They could do the exact same with cameras 🙃🫠 honestly I’m convinced someone in the LiDAR space must have called Elon on his BS so thoroughly that he took it personally and felt compelled to prove them wrong. Too bad he failed and the only actual self driving rigs use LiDAR because it makes more sense and the Tesla vision system just phantom brakes in the middle of the street 🤷

But cameras are far better at causing spectacular crashes whilst Tesla blames the dead driver.
@Neojhun
@Neojhun 11 ай бұрын
Though the serious technical reasons is not really relevant in this spat. LiDAR on highway speed vehicles is pointless bordering on dangerous. Even at on coming 70 mph one way = 140 mph relative velocity. The bleeding edge tech 60 cycles per second LiDAR is accurate to about +/- over 1 meter. Problem such units are very expensive and very small production yield. Anything being mass produced today is much LESS accurate and relies on Sensor Fusion to check it's data and apply some error correction. The truly superior sensor no one seems to care about FLIR based IRST which is what GM Cruise uses. That is accurate to +/- several meters at MACH 3. Not that any of this is important, not like people are actually going use this data.
@cbotten106
@cbotten106 2 ай бұрын
@@Neojhun So, setting aside the technical reasons, do you think Elon Musk is going to be more willing to pay patent fees for the next level Lidar when it finally gets to market? I suspect not. That IRST is never going to catch on with an ugly sounding acronym like that, btw. 🤣

Your point about the weight is exactly what was on my mind a few days ago while I was running around in my Alfa Giulia. I know the next one will be EV-only, but I can't for the life of me figure out how they'll make it handle as well as the current one when it is 1500 lbs heavier than it should be. Active suspension tech just increases the weight even further and eliminates the analog feel that makes sports cars----"sporty". With all the downsides to batteries; the geopolitics, the fires, the old car parks in NYC that will collapse, etc. I really see the ICE staying with us indefinitely via hybrids, synthetic fuels, hydrogen combustion, and whatever else the smart people can come up with. There is just no "free lunch" in Nature.

@@paulgrant868 At some point, EVs may be the only thing available sadly. However, maybe the weight of batteries will go down. Or maybe some sort of hydrogen hybrid EV will be come reality some day. That's way off, infrastructure and costs aren't close yet.

Zack is one of the best. Not biased, very objective, has much knowledge, is funny and can deliver emotions when driving fun cars. The Eletre is sick! Lotus just reacts to what's wanted from many ppl and that are big SUV tanks... If we like it or not, most buyers demand it. If Lotus wouldn't react they'd bury themselves. I can absolutely live with a brand that sells SUVs AND sportscars in contrast to a brand that just sells sportscars and dies bcs of ignorance! Just took delivery of a R1T. The Rivian guide suggested keeping regen on standard since I'm new to EVs. On the second day I tried high regen and actually find it much easier and predictable because you have the confidence of knowing that the vehicle will stop (rather than second guessing). As all Norwegians, I have waited for this review since it is in Norway. Your review Zack was great. And now you will probably hear from all us Norwegians that nitpick what you said about Norway that was wrong :) The most obvious one was saying EVs are heavily subsidised in Norway by oil money. EVs cost the same in the US as they do in Norway - not including US EV tax credit and whatnot that makes US EVs subsidised. EVs in Norway are sold without tax credits, but fossil fueled cars have for decades had lots of different taxes, like on weight, engine size, CO2 emissions etc.

Don't get me wrong, I despise the truck/SUV craze that's infected the car market over the last 15 years, but I fully acknowledge that car companies have to go where the money is. I completely agree with Lotus’ vision for the future build lots of high profit margin lifestyle vehicles, and I love the contempt that it will be build in some factory in china, while the boss sports cars will be made in the uk factory.

That's a sexy exterior, but what's to stop a large, well established maker from building a sleek EV SUV like that? The new Prius for example is pretty sleek but it's economy.

15:03 why do the cupholders have a cover? Because cupholders should always have a cover when not in use. It's very uncouth to have uncovered cupholders, especially is a luxury vehicle. That's why Rolls Royce covers or has a hiding place for nearly everything.

I have uncovered cupholders in my generic commuter car. They gather up dust, crumbs, etc. like crazy.

Might be one of the best looking electric EV's I've seen so far, very well done Lotus and the range is pretty impressive as well. I cant afford one, but if I could, I'd give this a try for sure! :)

And it’s not only funding the Lotus sports cars…even if it is a heavy EV SUV, it’s still gonna handle and perform better than the Honda & Chevy SUVs.
