I hit a chunk of ice two winters ago. got out of the car and it smelled like gas. not only did it puncture the gas line, it also took out a brake line. that being said, with how fragile gasoline cars are, in well over 1 million miles and 16 years of driving, that's the closest I've come to an incident. and my gas tank sits low, low enough that I scrape it virtually every time I pull out of a low driveway. and I've honestly never had a gas tank puncture, and that is with really thin sheet metal that you can bend with a bare hand. now lithium batteries, although scary, habe onpy a fraction the power potential. the model s has the power equivalent of 2.6 gallons of gas. the whole cars catching fire thing was due to a model s hitting a trailer hitch in the road. it punctured one of 9 battery cells and the other groups did not spontaneously ignite either. that battery case saw over 15 tons of force leading up to its failure, and there was plenty of notice and no injury associated with it. and that was before they started armoring them just in case.

In an off-road situation, momentum is very important. You've got to keep the speed up to sort of ease your way through loose dirt especially if you're going uphill. There were times when the Model X could have done it easily if not for that dude who always cry "STOP" right on the spot where the obstacle is and trying to make the X crawl as slow as possible so it would actually depend upon the grip of the "on-road or street" tires. Of course it would slip because the tires were not made for that kind of ride. It was as if he was deliberately trying to get the Model X stuck when it could have been a piece of cake if it had the momentum.

It’s not about preventing mods, it’s just creating good geometry in a multi-link front. It allows optimizing caster, camber, and steering axis over a wider range of compression, extension, and steering angles - great for a premium sedan/sports car - on pavement. Like a lot of strut suspensions also, the drawback is close clearances that don’t allow much in the way of wider, or in this case taller tires.

I'm willing to bet if you went with a skinny wheel, with really low backspacing (maybe 3 or 4''), you would be able to get a taller tire on that would clear the base of the strut tower. I could see a 17x7 with lower backspacing clearing the strut tower along with a skinnier tire. I believe those have 8.5'' wide wheels. Not sure about caliper clearance , though, but steel wheels are usually thinner and can clear calipers better

I have a suggestion to fit Off road tires on the Tesla! There is a few ways you can do it starting from cheap to mediocre to very expensive and the quality and risk of damage ranges in the same order. 1. Cheap option - you can get a few washers and extend the distance from the hub to get further from the brake and the suspension bar. 2nd option mediocre - they sell hub extensions devices for street racer vehicles with similar issues (Tesla isn't the only car brand with the brake and suspension issues). This option can also be produced at a metal shop if you can't find one or can't get one to your location. 3rd. Most expensive option - there are Tesla enhancement garages that can customize this option for you. Also there is a youtuber by the name of "Rich Rebuilds" that likes to help out with these projects and definitely does like to Collaborate with other Tesla drivers which makes a perfect option. Thumbs up and or comment if you agree, like, or if this helps. (I hope you guys will be able to see this comment) Let me know Thanks

They have 18" wheels that fit the Tesla. Aftermarket

You can still do this... just add hub extension discs and the suspension upper arm won't be in the way of the tire. Bigger rim size and extensions plus the bigger off road tires can fit.

Why? Convert your Jeep. It'll probably be cheaper and more capable in one fell swoop. BOSCH is apparently making a drop in axle that has the electric motors and gear reduction built in, I've heard of electric hub motors that basically replace your brake calipers, and lots of people have just put a tesla motor in whatever they could.

mica davis *imo* Imagine how cool it would be to rock climb in a Tesla. No noise, just you, a quite box of steel and nature. Enough space to sleep in the car and have all your luggage, “refueling” with a solar panel while sleeping or while doing camping stuff. Idk it just seems like a very peaceful and fun time.
@revwroth36984 жыл бұрын
@@antoineemond4013 that would be pretty awesome, especially if you have a solar panel setup for recharging the batteries. I just prefer to have total control over my vehicle and the ability to modify it as I see fit. I've seen a number of videos on here that detail various problems with trying to fix your own tesla or modify one. I've modified my truck so much that I can barely imagine getting something that I can't modify. Then there's the 4x4. I'm not sure if it'll have a real part or full time four wheel drive system. It seems more likely that it'll have a computer controlled all wheel drive system with the traction control. There's a great video from Ronnie Dahl (I'm pretty sure I spelled that right) about the actual difference between four wheel and all wheel drive and why all wheel drive is only really good for well maintained dirt roads. Because of all this, it is my opinion that a person who loves offroading would be better off modifying a legitimate four wheeler like that sweet jeep in your thumbnail or my 93 pathfinder to have an electric motor tied in to the mechanical four wheel drive system. Actually, I'm slightly more interested in the prospect of hydrogen fuel since electrolysis is easily accomplished and lots of people who rock crawl have altered their ICE to burn propane because they will run while they're upside down on an actual gaseous fuel. Then there's the Bollinger SUV, which is hideously overpriced but it looks like a truck and the guys who designed it actually go four wheeling. Some of my favorite videos feature various gas burning cars that have been tesla swapped.
