This idea did cross my mind once when I was thinking about getting a second hand Nissan Leaf. Just for a laugh I googled the specs for a small 2 stroke "suitcase" generator that wouldn't take up an excessive amount of the load space, then did some calculations. I can't remember exactly what the results were, but once the inefficiency of the generator and the Leaf's charging circuit were taken into consideration, it worked out to something ridicules like 2:30h of charging per extra mile worth of power put into the battery. To get any usable "get out of trouble" charging in an acceptable time frame would need a much bigger generator. I'm not even sure if a Leaf's electronics would decide there wasn't enough power coming in and refuse to charge at such a low level. :D

Matt you are absolutely correct, I fixed my salvaged car and supercharging was disabled. It took them 6 months to turn it off and in that time had charged over 10 times. My car was front end damaged and only went as far as the subframe. It's been a year now and 40k miles later it's been really good with little to no issues. I really like what your doing with the Jag and looking to put a model 3 into a Ford ranger but completely with as much Tesla functionality as possible. Looking to integrate battery pack with custom frame and motor using Tesla subframe. I just want an electric truck so bad I think I could build one myself before they begin production! Anyway great progress and enjoy every video! Casey

Road trip with 400 mile range is perfect without any supercharger. When I lived in Europe, I used to travel on the local roads and explore the small towns, I would stop somewhere, check into a local hotel and spend a day or maybe 2 wandering around the area. This would be perfect for the overnight charge routine. If you are trying to go 800 miles in one day, flying is a better option.

@@oldschool1993 i think you are failing to grasp how much empty space there is in the US. it is 70 miles to the nearest walmart from where i live. and i only live in a moderately rural area. this place is freaking huge. hell, friend of mine drives 200+ miles every work day, 4 days a week. thats Paris to Berlin with 150 miles to spare, every week. now sorry, i just noticed you said "when" you lived in Europe, so i dont know if you live in or have lived in the states, so i dont mean to sound condescending if you do. but the reality is, the US was really built around the automobile in a way few other developed countries are. adoption of electric cars is getting better, but i dont see it being really a mainstay, especially everywhere inland, until either electric vehicles can do something like 800 miles on a charge, or there is some equivalent to being able to pull up to a gas station and leave withing 10 minutes charged up. i have genuinely seen tesla's with portable generators in the trunk to be able to get them home if they run to close to out of charge.

Range anxiety is mostly from people without an EV. We have an eGolf (beside other cars), and we love it. The range of around 150-200 miles was never a problem. Fast charging is widely available, and if we need to go very far we use a petrol or a diesel car..

I wonder how the new NACS system will affect the legality of using a Supercharger for the Jag? Since it'll be the new Standard for fast charging for all EVs in the entire US, I wonder how/if Tesla will still try to tell you that you can't charge it at a Supercharger. If it would become reasonably legal for you to use them, it might be worth upgrading the charging equipment. This video is also two years old already by the time I'm making this comment, and I'm fairly certain this build is already done by now. There is also the possibility that this question is addressed in a later video already.

That might change as Elon opens SuC for other brands. You can buy a CCS kit nowdays (Made by German company Vector). Your BMS tells the CCS charger not to cook your battery. In fact the BMS of my Model S told a CCS charger to do 19kW only when the battery was very cold. There are options.

That pt cruiser picture just made me want one. Take it and cut the floor out of it. Snd build a 2x3" square tube frame, use a direct injection 4.3 vortec v6, LV3 im thinking. Maybe its not direct inj. But its LS/LT based. Connect it to a tr6060 from a camaro, maybe add some boost. A couple turbos will definitely make it fun. Use a explorer 8.8, 3.55 gesrs. 26" tall tires 17-18 rims 7.5-8" wide front. And 8.5-10" rear coil over ladde bars or 4link, with a watts Link over a panhard bar. And graft on mid 80's corvettte disc brakes, upgrade the stock parts later. It would make one heck of a sleeper, especially with a quiet exgsust, use a flow master pro series muffler, eith 3" exhaust, and definitely put atleast a 6point cage inside, i would guarantee it would do 10.50 in the 1/4, with 4.10 gears and 10-15 psi of intercooled boost. Maybe a 75-100 hp wet nitrous kit, at least using E85 for the nitrous, using port injection with a nitrous nozzle on the bottom of the intake using a holley high ram style intake with 90mm throttle body. Then happy fun in a pt cruser..

In Europe Tesla is required to offer CCS charging for other car brands. So if that ever makes it’s way to the states, just make sure the charger doesn’t confuse your Jag as a Tesla. Which kind of makes sense.

As dey ave schewed zee people owning zee rekt Tesla's, and that most supercharging is not free, they should simply require the use of a Tesla App or physical card for supercharging including non Tesla vehicles. Simple net 30 terms and a credit system for the various means of acquiring free supercharging credits could go through. As far as the supercharging stations, they have over current, thermal protection and so on, it really doesn't matter what people plug into them. The same applies to salvage Teslas. They have quite an extensive self diagnostics suite. It is entirely lawful to rebuild a vehicle, have it inspected for roadworthiness and safety (requirement in all 50 States) and drive it on the road like any other vehicle. Blocking supercharging in an inspected vehicle with a satisfied self diagnostics check is nothing short of illegal discrimination. Their is no justification for blocking the charging outside of artificially devaluing salvage cars. As far as any kind of liability for allowing any vehicle to supercharge, there is none. That's would be the equivalent of trying to hold Exxon liable for a bank robbery because the perps stopped to fill up the getaway car before the heist. Or trying to hold them responsible because someone was smashing vehicles in a rage with a tank half full of Mobil 87 octane. It just doesn't make sense. Often times people are initially confirmed when it comes to something new. Like liability for supercharging. At the end of the day, it's no different than a gas station. Tesla is no more liable for a car catching on fire than Jimmy's corner variety for selling gas for a car that catches on fire. Phew!!! I think I've beaten that dead horse sufficiently lmao 🤣

You've got to admit that not the inspectors nor the inspection itself (on all 50 states) are prepared to check high voltage battery cars, they'll check frame damage and safety devices but they don't know how to check battery health and they don't have any way to check if a cell is damaged or something is wrong with the pack, i'm with you with the third party charging but wrecked cars will be a risk, a cutoff from the supercharger might come too late if the cells are bad and started heating up, I get why tesla is so reluctant to this as car fires damage their reputation too much.

@@Freddiew-117 The software won't even let the car charge more than 50 miles if a single 18650 cell is dead. They have to be repaired perfectly to work, this has been the bain of many Tesla drive users. There's a guy building an electric sports car. He has taken his batteries in and out so many times it's heartbreaking. The modules wouldn't close the contactors. What he finally discovered was that the battery monitoring checks for leakage in the Megohms. He finally got everything isolated sufficiently and found another issue. Megohm resistance testing uses 5000 volts at very controlled low amperage. Repeated arcing (small snaps as it bridges a gap) will burn out the driver. Tesla systems really are incredible. The battery monitoring system fails safe. If it can't get feedback from a sensor, it simply doesn't work. If you want to see extreme frustration, watch people using Tesla mainly or any other OEM electric drive. {I'll put a note here. The system could have an 800 volt motor without having battery voltage anywhere near that. It would actually be more efficient and silent. EV motors shriek because of the IGBT SWITCHING. 18 batteries at 48v each would be perfect. That's what would be called a 36 pulse drive or inverter. 800v motor is 460v per leg. The batteries stage on to make a sine wave. They also have the rapid switching so it doesn't look like a stepped square wave but switching is greatly reduced to bridge 48v vs the 0 to 800 in a single pack. We commissioned a 11.7 kilovolt 120kilowatt motor on a natural gas train overseas. It was a 72 pulse system, 12 positive and 12 negative for each phase. You could hear a faint hum at the motor. It was more than 20ft tall. Why they don't mandate EVs to operate that way is beyond me. 48v is harmless and an 800v motor is serious juice. Anyway I digress} Over current devices for high voltage now function in nanoseconds. Faster than a dead short can form an arc. Something like a supercharger would initially send out a low voltage looking for amperage X threshold. It would never even start charging if there was an issue. Liability is definitely not the issue. They are no more liable for a salvage rebuild than any other OEM. All of the rebuilt Teslas have worked flawlessly. They didn't work at all before every single safety system and sensor was repaired, replaced and operational. Even so, the builder takes on all liability. The Salvage inspections are for road worthiness, chassis integrity, brakes and suspension, and safety system check. They don't look at the motors. If you want to have a better understanding of something like a 36 pulse drive. @@Freddiew-117 Did you look at the Siemens variable frequency drives? A simple analogy would be a maglite that takes 6 D cell batteries. It will light dimly with a single D cell at 1.5v then you add another and the voltage jumps up to 3v, then 4.5v and so on up to 9v. To form the negative half of the sine wave those same batteries are staged in with reverse polarity. With 9v of DC battery, you can get 18v peak to peak. To get the RMS voltage, you just multiply the peak to peak times 0.707 and you get 12.73v RMS AC out of 6 batteries at 1.5v each. If you multiply the battery 🔋 voltage ⚡ by 30 then you will have six 45v batteries that combined make +270 volts and reverse polarity -270v for a total p2p voltage of 540v. Do your RMS multiplier and you have 382v RMS. EV AV Motors are 3 phase so that would be one leg. To get 3 phase RMS voltage you can multiply a single leg times 1.414. So adding two more banks of six 45v batteries would give you the capacity of 540 3ph volts rms from eighteen 45v batteries. A close common voltage would be 48vdc for batteries. 18 of those with 1100cca will be capable of putting out 576VAC 3 phase power with 1,555 amps peak capacity. A single leg only has 1100cca like an individual battery. Going to 3ph the potential (voltage) and the current is shared among the 3 legs. Using the same 1.414 multiplier times the 1100 gets you the 1,555 amps. So why in the world don't they do it this way? 48v is harmless, you can hold a dry bare hand on each of the terminals and the resistance of your skin is enough to block it entirely. The case safety requirements, the precharge contactor to bring the voltage up in the inverter wouldn't be needed. You would however need 3 IGBTs on every battery. One positive to negative, one negative to positive, and one bypass to connect thru to the motor as batteries are staged in. As a massive bonus, you could continue to operate, bypassing a battery, at a slightly reduced output if you lost a battery!!! I'm seriously considering making an EV drive/inverter this way. It would be more efficient and cheaper to build. Do you think 🤔 it would be a worthwhile venture? I've been on the fence for years thinking someone would be doing it. Years later, I still hear 🦗🦗🦗🦗's

I'm glad you covered _why_ Tesla disables fast charging on salvaged cars. Tesla is a relative new car company running on relatively unique tech. You hit the nail on the head that a Tesla fire is going to garner _a lot_ of media attention just because of what Teslas are, while a gas car catching fire usually wouldn't even be news-worthy. I really dislike Tesla's approach towards repairs and salvaged vehicles, but frankly, it's a necessary evil for the company at this point.

I somehow dont believe Tesla is ever going after somebody who went through the effort of disguising a battery in such a beatiful way, they'd probably be pretty cool about that one jag coming every now and then. Also, if that oldie ever catches on fire, nobody will be blaming Tesla for it.

Well that's my idea of taking the guts of my (not wrecked) M3P and putting them into a camper when the lease is up out of the window. I suppose Ionity would still be an option but I'm just so used to the convenience of the Supercharger now.

Interestingly Tesla is opening up it's supercharger network to other EV's later this year. Be interesting to see how this happens.

What if you fabricate a 3D cover out of plastic sheets that when driving into a charging park put on the Jag and inflated makes it resemble a Tesla X or Cybertruck silhouette? During WW II the Army used such inflatable devises resembling Sherman tanks to fool the enemy!
