Some people will want this. Some won’t. I used to volunteer with the elderly for years I will never forget a woman of whom I spent a great deal of time. She was 97 years old. Fit and still of sound mind. She’d take a puff of her cigarette and tell me, “God is cruel. Everyday I wake up is like a cruel laugh to the face. My time on this earth is over. I’ve done everything and I’m ready to go now.” I’m serious everyday I’d see her she wished she were dead because she felt as though her life was complete and there was nothing more for her to do. She’d tell me all these wonderful stories of her life experiences. She’d tell me she lived a fulfilling life. Some people come to a point in their lives in which they feel as though they have lived a fulfilling life and they just want to go. In my own observation those who feel unfulfilled always wish for more time to be fulfilled. Nothing is wrong with either. Just an interesting observation.

At 97 years old and beaten up by the impact of time aging her body, why would she want to go on? All she can do is reflect on her life until she goes because she is certain she will die soon. I doubt she would think that way if she were biologically 35 and chronologically 97.

The reason chromosomes have telomeres which shorten is to prevent the prolongation of old cells which have acquired DNA damage and hence are at risk of developing tumours. Preventing this process may inhibit ageing but will promote the development of cancer cells.

infinitejest, sad but true.
@digiryde6 жыл бұрын
@infinitejest. While that is true, the shortening of telomeres is only one of many defenses against damaged cells. It is a last ditch defense. For cells to ge to the point where a telomere is the executioner, many other processes must have already failed. Also, there are many processes inside cells to fix damage to DNA. While it is true that we will not live forever (there are so many external causes of death and biological damage), it is possible to extend the part of life where we are in much better health, so that we might have a good biological life for 80 years instead of 50. Of course, most of the "anti-aging" market is snake oil. lol

I can see why people are afraid of 'living forever', especially when it is involuntary. I don't think anybody is suggesting that we subject all humans to a kind of compulsory treatment that extends our lives indefinitely. Instead, the idea is to develop a treatment to prevent, slow, or reverse ageing, when and if a person wants to. You can choose to die at 100 if you want to, some may want to live longer, some may not. I see the real problem here as 'choice'. Sooner or later, human technology will stumble upon the fountain of youth but this will make people conflicted because now they are forced to decide on the most fundamental and arguably the biggest decision of their existence. Our lives were given to us by our parents, but now we have to decide if we want to take it away. Imagine hating your mother for dying because she didn't 'choose' to live longer. Or, imagine your children hating you for living longer because they won't get your inheritance. In the past, we could blame death on ageing which takes individual choices out of the equation, but in the future, this may change. Personally, I think people should be given a choice to extend their lives or die a natural death. I don't like the notion of 'not thinking about something' just because it is too hard. That's silly, and that's just avoiding reality. These are questions that everybody needs to think about and reflect on because it is what truly gives meaning to our lives. "What am I living for?" "Why do I do this?" "Who will miss me when/if I'm gone?" "Was I such a terrible person that nobody will miss me when I'm gone?" If you think these questions are too hard and therefore you don't want to think about it, then you can choose to let ageing take you. But for those who need more time on this Earth to figure out the mysteries of life, they can choose to extend their lives.

I think aging is somehow beautiful up to some point where you start to develop problems because of that, but aging shows experience, emotions, it shows part of who you are and how has life shaped you some might even have the luck to age and look better than when they were young, more sophisticated even. What is the real beauty in looking 20 all your life besides the outside, if what you have inside is all rotten? Age can bring also sometimes respect from the youngsters, it is something that should not be looked at as horrible, stopping the process at some point may be beneficial for the health but the appearance is not to be considered the whole purpose.

@dominique hall diabetes type 1 is caused by the failure of pancreatic cells which are what produces the body’s insulin. This is a genetic disease in which the death process of these cells is rapidly sped up, meaning that by investigating the genetic process of aging and cell death she could have a reasonable chance of using stem-cell science combined with telomere lengthening treatments to construct a new pancreas for her son with genetically identical cells. This would mean that her son could have an organ transplant which would not be rejected by his body, but this time the cells would have a much longer lifespan and function normally. But this is purely theoretical. :)

I have wondered about that many times too, but regardless, if you pay attention, even just to a dawn bird singing, or a warm soft breeze or just a sip of a really good cup of tea when you are parched...you never run out of things to enjoy. You can never run out of books, movies, music, art, nature....Everything is online now. You can see so much without even leaving home. I know I have barely begun to scratch the surface of all the things there are to enjoy. A smile from a child in the market that sheepishly waves and says "hello" or a new food I never tried before. And learning is endless. Limitless. People who say they did everything and are ready to go, are not paying attention or looking around much beyond a very small window they see out of. And you do not need money to enjoy life. I sat outside under a canopy and had a coffee with my dog, watching the world rush by in the pouring rain and put my raincoat over my dog lol, because she hates the rain, and I had a lovely time. Watched people running around lol, getting wet. And listened to the sound of the rain, which I love. I had a great day and all I did was go grocery shopping and stop for a coffee when I was tired, until I felt re-energised. A perfect day. Pay attention to what is RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU. A colour, a bird, a person, a dress in a shop window you like, a snail on the sidewalk that will get stepped on if you don't pick it up by the shell, gently, and put it under a bush. Someone out there needs you. Everyone can be needed even if it's just a bug to rescue from being stepped on or drowned in the rain. You could do it all to Mozart lol or you can listen to Led Zeppelin, it doesn't matter, as long as you enjoy it.
