Very helpful video here. I have a 3x9 that I'm wanting to convert to 1x11 and putting the 11 speed cassette on I ripped the threaded lip off of the free wheel hub body so I filed down the bottom part to get away with it for now while my new replacement free wheel hub body comes in. Your video was helpful in clarifying that and I muscled it on there and shredded the threaded lip off of the free wheel hub body so I learned the hard way! Update: The damage freewheel hub did not work and the locking ring came loose on me on the last part of the ride and all the cogs were wiggling which caused my chain to miss some of the gears but I made it back to the vehicle safely. Got home and put on the new one and it held on much better.

You can even put a 12 speed cassette. If the cassette starts with an 11 teeth sprocket like the SRAM NX you can use it. If the cassette starts with a 10 teeth or smaller, than you need an SRAM XD driver body or the new Shimano Micro Spline depending on the type of the cassette.

Yes the Schwinn Axum free hub is identical to the Shimano hub. I upgraded mine from an 8 to a 9. I used the Park Tool FR-5.2 with no issues.

Which model DB? I put a 1x11 on an older Hook that came with a 1x8. I don't see why you would not be able to go 1x11 on yours. The 11s cassette should fit on the same freehub body. If the crankset that came with your bike has removable chainrings, you should be able to just buy a narrow wide chainring and put is on that crank. If they are not removable then you will need a new crankset. Let me now how it goes.

I had a bike shop mechanic look at my 8 speed for a second and said no chance it can take a 11 speed.I said to him how can you look only one second and say no way.Majorirty bike shop dont want you upgrading your bike they rather sell you a new one.

I discovered the Shimano MT15 rear hub fits neatly in the Schwinn Taff(135mm frame space). The MT15 hub supports 7(with spacer), 8, 9, 10, and 11 speed cassettes. Since I wanted to convert to Centerlock Discs they were the perfect fit for me. Also I keep finding it odd that SRAM keeps using Shimano HG drive on their cassettes instead of their own XD drive splines on big box store bikes. Edit: Forgot to mention, running Shimano's HG51-8bf(11-28 tooth) 8-speed cassette on that MT15 hub. I run close ratio as my Taff is an e-Bike conversion(Bafang BBSHD Bottom Bracket drive).

Here to update all you guys. Shimano standard 8/9/10 speed hubs will also fit a 12 speed sram nx cassette. I have a Trek marlin 6 2019, and the sram nx cassette fit perfectly on to it. The bike shop I bought the bike from said I would need to upgrade my wheels if I wanted a 12 speed cassette. Obviously they are liars or they never tried fitting on a 12 speed on to that type of bike.

Thanks for measuring everything out and verifying the fact that 8,9,10 or 11 speed cassettes can fit into the same hub. I have a Giant MTB that came with a Giant hub with a 9 speed Shimano cassette in it. Can I put a 12 speed cassette onto the same hub? And if yes, then do I also need to change the Shimano 9 speed Alivio derailleur that came with it or can I simply do with the same derailleur with just a change in the shifter from a 9 speed shifter to a 12 speed one?

A 12 speed will fit as long as it is HG not microspline or XD. A SRAM NX or SX cassette will work. I have another video explaining what you can combine. You will need a 12 speed derailleur, shifter and chain

Hi Toby, lately I've just gotten a new ride, it's 9 speed. I'm actually thinking about bringing it up to 11. But from the look itself it seems like I can only go up to 10. Is there any kind of measurement that I can make without taking out the cassette? Will the dropout affect it too?

Is it a mountain bike? If it is, all the cassettes from 8-11 speed (and even a SRAM NX 12 speed) are the same width. What changes is the space between the sprockets. In that case it will fit. Road bike will not since the hubs are a little different.

It depends on the derailleur. Most 11 speed derailleurs will need an extension for a 50 tooth cog. You will need to check your derailleur’s specs and the max cog it is designed for

Shimano XT 11 speed is a really good deal right now for Derailleur and shifter. KMC 11s chain, Sunrace 11-46 cassette. 30 or 32t narrow wide chain in the front. Just a recommendation, shop around.

If I remember correctly the Marlin 5 has a 7 speed hub (3x7 drivetrain). If that’s the case you cannot upgrade to 12 speed or anything higher than 7.

Are there any Mountain bike rear hubs with 130mm spacing that fits 8 speed (or more) cassettes? I bought a Klein pulse (post trek buyout, it's not THAT nice ) from 1997 and it had a 7 speed alivio setup in IG drive. So I decided back around 1999 to upgrade some stuff and do an 8 speed conversion with XT and XTR stuff, all was going well until I found I had purchased a shimano XT 135mm M750 rear hub for an aluminum frame that wanted a 130mm space. I just wedged it in an rode it at the time but then moved to a pretty bad cycling area shortly after that and haven't had it out for the past 15 years. I'd like to finally get a rear hub that fits correctly.

This hub is actually a Novatec. Most MTB hubs either use use a Shimano standard (HG) or Sram XD. They can be all kinds of different brands. The Shimano 12 speed uses the new micro spline hub.

The HG freehub body is the same for both boost and non boost so it should not make a difference. The boost HUB itself is wider. With that said, I would be a bit reluctant to put an 11-52 cassette on my bike. Most derailleurs already struggle with a 50t. I would just use a smaller chainring up front if I really needed such light gearing.

Sorry, I don’t have any experience with it. Looking at the pictures the derailleur has a stamped steel body that doesn’t look durable. For 12 speed system you can’t go cheap. Precision is too important. Even the 12s SRAM NX has some problems with shifting.

Zee Verano you should be able to fit an 11 speed cassette no problem. Of course you will need 11s shifter derailleur and chain to complete the setup. Then go single speed in the front with a narrow/wide chainring and you’re set.

If the cassette is made for an HG freehub it will. The SRAM NX 12 speed fits but not the GX. The smallest cog it will fit is 11 teeth.

Yeh this is not 100% true all the time. I had a Shimano 10s freehub on a ritchey vantage wheelset. My 11s cassette wouldn’t fit. The lock ring couldn’t reach the thread.

Sometimes manufacturers use road freehub bodies, which are slightly different, on mountain bike hubs. I have an older Mavic wheel that had the same problem.

Should fit with a shimano spacer installed under the cassette. Could be 1,5 or 2,18mm. Had this problem to fit a mtb 11x cassette on a shimano road freehub. Google for shimano 11x spacer

Two bike shops that I spoke to, both told me that there is no way to covert a 7-8-9 speed Shimano XT hub that would fit a 10-11-12 cassette. they did bullied me by saying if you could find a way to make it work, they would never work on my bike again. Then they tried to up sell me on a new $6000.00 bike, I said no thank you, but they did talk me into a 9 speed cassette from 11-34 to 11-36 for $55.00 installed. dam it. That $55.00 could have gone to a nice 11-12 group set.. You can’t believe bike shops anymore! Thank you Tony

If it is a road hub then they are right. This only applies to mountain bike hubs. MTB Shimano freehubs are 8,9,10,11 compatible but 7 speed hubs are not. Road hubs are a whole different size. I updated the description to reflect that. Thanks

SRAM SX or NX will also fit. Sunrace also makes 12s cassettes for these Shimano HG hubs

@@TonyHob Awesome, I have a Ironhorse yakuza and girlfriend just started getting a mountain biking and has a cross country bike. So I am kind of doing everything on it. So I was wondering if I could fit a one by 12 on this, because it has an eight speed on it right now and it’s a Cimato HG hub from 2009 I believe. I bought it secondhand

Sounds like a good project. The 12 speed cassettes above will fit that HG freehub
