The fact that people who grew up with childhood trauma are more likely to see neutral facial expressions as angry is the reason why all of us have at least one friend who's always asking, "Are you mad at me?"

Honestly, this is a great insight. I struggle a lot with anxiety, but my avoidance of those situations probably hurts my life more than the stress itself.

I see anxiety as excitement thats been contorted by our attempts to compulsively press a brake pedal that doesn't exist--resisting that excitement.

I appreciate that you brought up the study about those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds interpreting situations with more danger. I believe this is true of a lot of types of childhood trauma, and it isn’t just about changing the momentary narrative of anxiety vs excitement but also a larger narrative that has been created over a lifetime of experiences. An inner voice from childhood that was once there with great purpose to try and protect you is still very present trying to protect you even when the danger may be gone. Changing that narrative may be a much bigger process of intentional reflection about where that voice is coming from.

I did that for a while as well but it is incredibly exhausting and the pandemic has undone most of my progress. So for anyone trying to do more that makes them uncomfortable, please take care of yourself and scedule time for self care. Maybe i'll start trying this again as well, i just really don't know where to start.

First of all you are criminally underrated, I think your channel deserves way more views. I grew up in a poor area but went to a prestigious uni and that’s where my anxiety really started to grow. I agree that socioeconomic background has something to do with this because I have seen other students, with similar backgrounds, dealing with the same issue. To me one method of overcoming my anxiety (which does not always work) is to “try to enjoy the task”, perhaps similar to turning an anxious feeling to an exciting one, and at certain times it really has worked. Before, I was avoiding all the social events, prefer to stay alone but this year I have been trying to say “no” less and trying to get involved a bit more and it was really rewarding if the situation turned out alright. Sometimes I feel like I am overwriting a “faulty” component of a program constantly so that I could encourage myself to do something really out of my comfort zone.

I've done this without knowing that it's an established strategy! Like when I was scared of doing a presentation, I'd try to focus on how I'm looking forward to helping people understand the topic I'm presenting, and then I'd tell myself that the nervousness I'm feeling is actually excitement for that reason. Really cool to think about in what other situations our feelings might just be a result of what we think we're ~supposed~ to be feeling

My anxiety disorder has morphed and changed over the years, presenting new fears and feelings of threat over time (that I can easily trace to traumatic events) and I have only recently discovered the idea of reappraisal, or reframing. This was such an eloquently presented and REAL take, and I really appreciate it!

Great video. I found what (often) works for me is to try to understand the anxiety, where is it coming from, why am I really feeling anxious. Often it turns out to be something stupid, like jumping to conclusions because you don't know something so you assume the worst (the tiger in the bush), so suddenly it goes: oh I'm just being an idiot, and the anxiety becomes funny and disappears.

Although I think it may be a side effect of curiosity: the anxiety about a certain topic will tend to come back until you really understand the topic. For certain topics, it can become annoyingly time-consuming.

I'll tell you what though, sometimes even when I know a fear is irrational, that doesn't make it go away. It helps, but I just have to learn to tolerate what's left over.

That's actually a great thought. I'm trying to think alike. If something brings anxiety to you, try to think of it as an opportunity to learn something new through this experience. Try turning this fear of failure into the courage of exploring more about this world.

As someone who loses their confidence more quickly than gaining it, I found this video to be very helpful in reframing anxiety. I thought there was something "wrong" with me as I was having a hard time getting by in everyday interactions. A few months ago, I was fine as I wasn't too far from my friends at school, and since the same things happened most of the time, I felt calm. Now that I've kind of fallen back into a "quarantine" this summer, which is me working on hobbies, not having COVID lol, I see how I lost that fragile sense of confidence that was detrimental to handling anxiety. Even as someone who tries to lean into things and accept them rather than suppress or prolong it, your words healed me. It's also crazy how many people refer to controlling it rather than trying to understand it or accept it. But, it'll happen here and there because we have to reframe our survival instincts, like fear, to survive in the 21st century. Once again, I loved this video. I'll take it into heart so I can do one more uncomfortable thing!

The formatting of your videos is really concise and I really appreciate what you said here as I grew up in a highly dysfunctional household and used to dig into the reasons why my brain would be the way it was or the effects of living in such environment on the brain. Great video! I recently was in a group of new hires presenting our experiences at our jobs and came into the room rather anxious, not wanting to fail and form a negative image of myself in the minds of everyone watching. As I watched more and more presentations and as the time came for me to present, I noticed that I still felt anxious, but I was also unintentionally smiling. I was able to repurpose the anxiousness into excitement, and it made the experience much more successful and enjoyable!

From my own experiences I knew that reframing a situation in such a way is definitely often helpful (and liberating if overthinking is involved), but somehow this resemblance between anxiety and excitement was strikingly new to me and lit something up in my head. I really liked the visualizations/animations and the fact that you also mentioned how widely and differently the term anxiety is used nowadays. Great content, wish you all the best!

An unexpected video. I'm not sure if I can agree. I came to a similar conclusion as a young adult, drawing energy from my nervousness (not clinical anxiety) rather than treating it as a nuisance. This did help me many times over the next two decades. But here's the problem. Is nervousness the same thing as anxiety? A quick search shows that there are a few key differences, and that anxiety is not the same thing you feel when you're asked to perform in front of others. I think this video addresses nervousness, in particular performance anxiety. This is not the same thing as clinical anxiety, which I assume must - at least in some cases - be dealt with differently.
