I suffer from Multiple Depressive Disorder on account of my brain doesn't make enough serotonin, and I always feel better after starting up DS1 and trying to speed run the bells. Edit: Also in my opinion open world, open ended games like animal crossing or minecraft dont go well with depressive episodes, bc if I play them too long under those circumstances I tend to cultivate a mounting existential dread. I think the souls games challenging, goal oriented gameplay provides helpful structure and feedback.

For me it's because Dark Souks is just so dark. And when you are down or depressed these things can scare you as there is this inate fear of not wanting to descend further. But to let yourself take on this grim challenge and then overcome it it can genuinely instill this sense of progress and confidence. You preserve and and overcome what seems like bleak odds.

Have worked with many children with mental health problems and the topic of their gaming has often come up. For many their gaming is an activity which enables them to escape their emotional problems and situation; they can set themselves goals in game that give them a positive emotional boost when they achieve it. I'm a therapist and avid gamer; I've found my gaming has given me an activity that enables me feel in control and challenge myself when I've been facing challenging periods.

So funny that this video has been released. I have PTSD and Souls/super intense online shooters are super "soothing" for me and I had asked myself why before. I think it has something to do with how when you play an ultra intense game that demands you to be engaged in its world, your brain cannot think of anything other than the game you are playing. You are fully "in the moment" and it essentially is like mindfulness meditation

I think ultimately, playing Dark Souls is somewhat a form of meditation; I didn’t see it the first time I played through the game, but the patience and the pursuit of meaning and love in the face of struggle was a vital lesson that I got a glimpse of in dark souls and found mirrored in meditation, listening to Ram Dass and reading Buddhist texts. I feel as if the eastern culture that seeps through into the veins of Dark Souls is a lesson that 2011 westerners really needed, and with its cultural impact and massive follwimg following at this point, I feel as if its message was well heard and has given valuable lessons to everyone who played through it for long enough. Playing Dark Souls taught me the joy of determination that when I kindled it (perhaps a fitting pun) ended up being incredibly beneficial in countering my OCD.

That's part of it, but there are many aspects of the world itself that help lift one's spirits. It's the simple fact that you're trudging around in this dark, decrepit, and dying world, and yet there's still plenty of beauty to behold. Not only that, but the games have some wonderful, inspirational, thought-provoking characters, and the lore and setting is chock-full of metaphor for the real world. Playing the Souls' game series has taught me alot about the real world in terms of how long it'll take to work at something to get the result you want - and how varied in both lengths and commitment those results and efforts can give you. Sometimess, you'll be able to beat a boss in 2/3 tries, other times, 15+ - but both results are only achievable if you try to consistently work at that barrier, even if it takes you 1, 2, 30+ days to get it. That's why I appreciate the series because with how often I get my ass whooped over and over again, I realize that it's no different to when I want to achieve something in my own personal life - and when I finally DO manage to succeed? Pure and utter bliss comes from that.

I remember getting to ash lake for the first time, finally conquering blight town, spending 8 hours fighting Orenstein and Smough over and over again. Nearly crying as I linked the first flame. Afterwards I felt like I had finally done something worthwhile, like I had accomplished something amazing and that I was a part of something... And I've never been the same since. My answer, yes, most definitely. See, what souls games do is they give you that never give up mentality. Even as you die over and over again, the game doesn't take your hope away of achieving victory. Dark souls might be challenging, but really, it's fair if you keep trying and change your tactics. This mentality can be applied to real life as well. Life will keep putting us down, but if we keep pushing and don't go hollow, you'll see just how drastically our lives will change.

At the same time instilling me with hope to be able to make even the smallest positive changes in my own life and the lives of the few npcs you meet along your journeys. Cool bits: 5:00 - games as a mindfulness exercise 6:30 - it's not a blanket cure for everyone (and this might make it matter why and how you're mindful about playing...) 9:20 - how the souls games bleakness can be cathartic like listening to sad music when you're sad 10:00 - "At the core of understanding one's self is the process of symbolizing what we go through with language, putting words to feelings... There can be something very relieving in hearing one's experience reflected concisely with words and in that way feeling less alone... Hearing it voiced and expressed gives it a name and a face, and it's something you can work with... gives the player permission to be feeling hopeless as opposed to suggesting that the player should be progressing well and feeling really good about it." 11:38 - transferring skills and self-esteem from a game into the rest of your life - Like when people bring games up, "I just take them seriously" - wow.

I was in a terrible shape a few years ago, depression, a job that's been making me miserable to this day, lost the only chance I had to fall in love before this whole mess started, then along come a couple of my friends and give me a copy of Dark Souls Remastered for my birthday, I hated it at first, like you have no idea, I really hated that unbalanced, unfair mess they called masterpiece, but then it clicked with me... Grinding for souls, exploring slowly and steadily, one little step at a time, watching my surroundings, learning from them and my mistakes, slowly getting better and learning about the game and the world it took place in, and then It came to me... I was turning hollow, and my friends tossed me the key to get out of the cell and escape that prison... They where trying to tell me what I needed to do in real life to finally get out of my situation, and I'll always be thankful for that, little steps and learning from previous mistakes, dealing with one thing at a time and slowly but steadily going forward, no matter how many times you fail, keep going and don't stop or you'll go hollow

It's insane but it does. It helped me do better in school in all. It boost confidence and all but if you have suicidal depression it won't help. it will help clinical depression. When I had miminal depression it helped a ton but since my depression is suicidally bad it does give me something to do and excites me. It gives me something to look forward too

To Editor: Add a name of Game whenever you show clip, so that people who don't know which game is it will know. Its just adds more quality to video.

But they literally mention the names of the games as they are shown. And this is a video for souls fans, so one should be pretty familiar with the games that are being played

this this video is not only for Souls fans, this is bigger than that.

I know exactly why: Bloodborne is my favourite game and I’ve done a no death run. the central theme of From Software’s latest games is overcoming. Fighting again and again to beat something. A boss, to the next bonfire/lamp it doesn’t matter. It’s allegorical to the things in your life. The Japanese have a phrase “Gamanzyoi” which roughly means to bear the unbearable. I’m glad Japanese and these games really speak to my heritage. I love co-oping with people and helping them through a boss they’re stuck at. I’m a strong advocate for accessibility but I really think they shouldn’t have an easy mode. You don’t give up, and fight for more. To be stronger, to be better.

I got into Rock climbing years ago and when people ask me why I climb is the same reason souls games serve a sort of forced meditation. Two kids later, less climbing, and more souls games when I should be sleeping. It all makes sense now!

when I play it can be like going through the stages of grief, just getting to acceptance

It is ok to be alone, it is ok to fight till you make it. But remember it is also ok to reach out and touch that friendly golden sign.
