In this episode of the Fully Charged Show Podcast we dive into the heart of the political debate surrounding electric vehicles with a unique perspective. Our guest, Mike Murphy is a seasoned Republican strategist and proud EV owner who is challenging the divide between Democrats and Republicans via the EV Politics Project. This initiative aims to bridge the partisan gap and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by understanding the key drivers underpinning electric vehicle sentiment and perception. Fascinating interview. I agree that as soon as one mentions the words "green" or "environment", many people's eys glaze over. So, as an EV driver myself, I tend to talk about running costs, driving experience, etc., and people do seem to listen more.

I love the E-technology, thats what gets me excited first. But also as a city dweller I am sick of breathing fumes also. And the geopolitical aspect of fossil fuels. Electricity is everywhere. Climate change can be argued forever, not my thing. We are getting warmer though and I hope we can control it.

I appreciate how pragmatic he's being. I remember early on (and still today sometimes) a lot of criticism about "EVs are coal powered" as a rebuttal to the environmental concerns, to which the best reply is "The US doesn't import coal, but we do import gasoline and diesel" and "Remember than next time you complain about coal miners losing their jobs." Always shut 'em right up!

Just FYI. Here in Ann Arbor Michigan it was impossible to get any EV other than a Tesla in early 2023 when GM reclaimed our leased Bolt. We have not realized ANY subsidies from the IRA. Not for EV, not for our insulation, air source heat pump, heat pump water heater, energy recovery ventilation, induction range or solar. We are off gas except our dryer. Agree that letting the states do the IRA roll out isn’t helping here and policies that people can’t get their hands on is a problem. Love EVs-will never buy an ICE vehicle again. Never. Don’t have any special home charging-just trickle charge overnight. I don’t even track on gas prices anymore these last 5 years.

Similar here in Northern Arizona, we have 100% electric home, now that I just finished installing a universal heat pump HVAC system, with solar, small wind turbine and 2 EV's. I'd suggest you replace your dryer with a heat pump electric dryer, they use less energy and can run on 120V. The IRA provides the $7500 tax credit, along with billions in EV infrastructure, solar and wind funding and infrastructure, which my company is benefiting from with a 1.5 million new solar manufacturing plant being built in TX, and an equal size mfc. plant in Michigan.

If you're up for a recommendation to get off that last gas appliance, I love my GE all-in-one front loading washer with heat pump dryer. It only needs 120 volts so you don't need to install a special additional circuit for it, mine went right in where my old washer and gas dryer were. Also doesn't need venting to the outside so you can close up one of the holes in your house, it condenses the water and sends it down the drain line.

It’s interesting that you say it’s Elon Musk that has made it political. I have been watching him since 2014 preach the same message but he has been attacked and mocked by the incumbents and more recently by the Democratic Party, of which he used to be one. How can he continue to support a party that is continually trying to tear him down every front? And I think we only see the tip of the iceberg.

Is America a free market economy? All the OEMs have been bailed out frequently over the decades and the us government pay out huge sums to oil and gas companies. If China has an advantage over the US it’s the commitment to electrification whereas America has vested interests in keeping things exactly as they are! It's much the same divide in the UK, I'd say I'm center right politically in the UK , but I did research on EVs and recognised that they are just more efficient vehicles, will save me money and a positive of that is there are no emissions so our air will get cleaner , but I'm under no illusion that EVs won't save the planet, most are still two ton machines the majority of time with just one occupant . There must be some way of dispelling this political divide over them, unfortunately quite a few on the right align EVs with Greta Thunberg and environmentalism , where they are just from a physics perspective far more efficient vehicles.

Mike Murphy has done a great job here explaining many of the complexities surrounding the electrification of transportation, and particularly regarding what is necessary to sell the idea to those who are (in many cases quite reasonably) skeptical of it. Keep in mind that there is no need to sell an idea to those who already believe in it. There is a good deal more to the issue than what Mike says here, but this is a reasonably good introduction. Also, since Imogen is fishing for compliments at 42:59 let me just say your hair looks great! 😜

@Smidge204
@Smidge204 3 ай бұрын
@@stephenbrickwood1602 I was talking about building roof PV as well. There is no building to have PV on the roof of in the middle of a parking lot. And if you're going to cover the parking lot with PV canopies - something I broadly support by the way - who is going to pay for that? What is the economic case for someone to build that infrastructure? If they 9the property owner) are building it to offset their own usage then they aren't going to give you any without money changing hands, which kinda blows up the whole paradigm. You'd be better off making vehicles with smaller batteries that are more affordable and putting that money into buying a battery system for your home to charge from the grid (which the parking lot solar is feeding into...) And we didn't even get into the cost of enabling offboarding power form your car to your home. Sorry but this scheme is just not realistic.
@stephenbrickwood1602
@stephenbrickwood1602 3 ай бұрын
@Smidge204 Wow. My thoughts are that most BVs will only need topping up. Many homes have 2 vehicles Work locations can include topping up as part of the employment package. Most shopping centres would have topping up as a feature. The combination of 20 million buildings and 20million BVs in Australia and all connected to the national grid is a powerful concept. Exceptions will always happen. The economics will be powerful and replace nuclear electricity schemes from nuclear promoters.

About twice a week so probably could run two from one charger.

Once you get used to driving electric, you really don't want to go back to gas. Just the day, for instance, I was a passenger in a friend's gas car. My first reaction, walking up to the car with the engine running was "this car smells like a gas station". Then, once inside the car and moving, having the motor drown out our conversation anytime we needed lots of power to get up a hill just felt primitive and crude. I've driven my EV up that same hill numerous times, and it's much quieter. The more people drive EVs, the more people will notice the advantages and get hooked on them, and the effect will snowball.

When the gas or DIEsel vehicles exhausts into the guy behind them's face. They can't see why the rest of us are complaining about the stink and the noise! I want a noise mandate!

I call them “EFV” “engine free vehicles”. Engines are a nuisance I’m glad to finally be free of. The environment never had anything to do with it.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an average autoworker makes about $28 per hour. This wage increased about a dollar from the year before. In states where the the Detroit Three automakers have factories, workers are striking for better pay.

This guy has absolutely nailed it, America lost its auto industry but if all Americans embraced Tesla it's come back and they can't see the wood for the trees.

Don't worry your hair looks fine. Great podcast for my drive to work here in south Australia , I'm sure our government doesn't get the EV revolution all just hanging back to see what America does.
