@@anthonyyoung7344 I'm not a muppet I happened to be a diesel mechanic too and those engines that wont start without ether even in the summer are fucked and need rebuilding. 9 times out 10 the the rings and bores are shagged through high hours or poor maintenance and would still be shagged if ether didn't exist. Addicted to ether just means the owner/operator cant be arsed to fix the problem and the only way to start it is with compression in a can.

Your quite rite Mucka, the only problem with ether is the dope using it, and emptying half a can down it's throat. engines only get "addicted" to it because there fucked 👍 we've rebuilt loads of engines and always been down to worn bores, piston rings, lack of compression.

One showy winters day we where starting a jcb 525-58 and it was smoking but would not fire, so I held the key in the heat position. At the same time the old lad that worked in the yard pulled out the air filter and sprayed ether into the filter housing not noing I was holding the key, well the thermostart heater plug ignited the ether and a fire ball come out the filter housing and when I looked the old lad had a black face and burt eye brows. We had an after market ether cold start system fitted on our trucks when I worked in Germany MANY years ago to lower the flash point and warm the engine in the pre-heater days. Used sparingly and when actually required it was a godsent but it required a trained operator to be the brain for that truck, if it didn't start you found out why and you fixed it! Great to hear someone talking basic engineering sense. Nice upload. 👍

You are absolutely right mate. I bought a Nuffield 465 that had sat for 6 years, Changed all the oils fixed all the brakes and gaskets. Used a bit of ether (aerostart in Australia where I am) to wake her up and off she went. Next day started on the button no ether at all. See people, they don’t get addicted, it’s only to help if you’re finding it hard to start it.

Good video good info. Here in the southern US addition to starting fluid is what we refer to some old tractor or logging equipment that had the problems you referred to but some guy didn't know how or want to spend the money to fix so after years of dry starting and wearing out the cylinder walls wouldn't have good compression to ignite fuel air mix and wouldn't start with out starting fluid keep the information coming

Great explanation. I'm a or was a farm boy in the states. Grew up in Minnesota and on mornings when the wind chill is -30 F. WE HAD TO USE ETHER. Or light a fire under the engine to warm it up. And I don't think my father would have agreed to that going on under a $80000 tractor and cattle needing to be fed. Any way, we had ether attached to the engine on some or a can of it in the tool box. And if used properly and can of ether would last forever because like you said. It just needs a couple of squirts and you're good to go. Great vids. Really like how you make those old girls purr again.

I used starter spary on my ford 2000 tractor for 5 years but only in small amonts because i had a bad fuel pump, and my tractor did not start up byself even when the engine was warm and i needed the tractor to work. Two years ago i had a bit of time and i broght my pump to a shop for reconditioning and it was like 100$ and now my tractor works without any problem and it starts without any spray or anything.

I am a new subscriber and going over some old videos . A good video this one , being working on Marine diesals for 40 yrs and the Ether addiction is rediculous , the people who say it dont understand a lot . I agree entirely that the reason you have to use is because there is something wrong , and until you fix the original fault you will have to keep on using it , SIMPLE . As for wanging them over on the starter motor , this will just cause damage ! The insulation in the starter motor and on the leads is only made for 10 second bursts, so if you burn ya leads you will need to keep usin Ether because will end up slow starting speeds. As you said its all to do with heat on top of the pistons through compression , if they have being stood a long time , or being stood in sub zero temperatures the compression is going to be low . Long periods of storage , everything will have contracted and oil presence will have disappeared , sub zero temperatures same again . Every engine I have rebuilt has needed Ether till its warmed and the compression rises.

It wouldn't cold start without it, and I would stand there another minute holding the go pedal, till it could idle. I was one of the only people that could start it on really cold mornings, and I got it to start every time.... I just woke up a lawn mower, that had been inoperable for months, with some (made sure to use small shots to get it to start, and stay running long enough to clear the carb)... I've driven semi trucks (lori's), with ether buttons....

Good morning Lord Muck, now I totally agree with everything that you have said in your film about EITHER , however when I was working on the farm in the mid eighties we only ever used the either when the weather was really freezing cold and we always kept the engines well maintained with regular oil changes and clean fuel to keep them working all day and every day especially during the harvest time and if we had to do an oil change in the middle of harvest IT WAS DONE and we always made sure that the air filters were cleaned out as well.

I know 2 old South Norfolk boys that really need to get to the Pub but had run out of petrol . All that had was a box load of Easy Start. Got there and back, 4 miles flat out on a Honda 90 step through. That old crunchy kept going for years. BEER BIKE..
