The Differences between Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione

For those of us deep within the sim racing community already, the difference between Assetto Corsa and Assetto Competizione is clear. But, we’ve had several requests as to which Assetto Corsa is which, what the differences are and, for those about to purchase the latest release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, which one has the free upgrade.
Allow us to explain for those who are new to the series, and with the recent hype about Assetto Corsa Competizione, we suspect that’s rather a lot of you.
We will run through the cars, tracks, game modes, online functionality, before a back-to-back comparison in a Lamborghini around Zolder.

When i first built my sim rig i bought both titles right away. Long story short: years after and i am still on AC and hardly ever fire up ACC. I feel like one very important gameplay characteristic was left out in the video, which is the gameplay itself. On ACC you are pretty much forced to take things seriously all the time. Regardless if you are racing or just practicing, the game is constantly watching over your driving skills and ranking your levels. It doesnt take very long for that to become tiring. Every single time you fire up ACC you get this feeling of being on your way to school where you will write an exam. You constantly need to prove yourself to the ranking system and hardly ever do you get the chance to just simply drive a car and enjoy yourself. And even when that happens, you are always in a GT car at the same few tracks that the game offer. So i only recommend ACC if you are a die-hard gt-racing fan. For everyone else: just go with AC. You can do the same ACC stuff plus road cars, old cars, LM cars, formula cars, rally tracks, road tracks, desert roads, touge runs, mountain climbs, drifting, etc etc etc. From Fiat 500 all the way to F1s...there is no limit. Oh and by the way, when you do find the limits of the game, you can start modding the crap out of it....AC is an absolute masterpiece

I honestly even tried track+car combinations From ACC in AC and they were more fun in AC. Much more fun. Not only that, I was able to join a friends nord tourist layout server and bomb around with him, set the weather to a moody overcast vibe with fog and then took the drone cam and filmed a beautiful cinematic sunset montage… I didn’t even do it to share with anyone i, I just did it for fun. Beyond just the driving being more varied engaging and fun there are just so many things to do! I spent 3 hours yesterday trying out different PP filters and taking beautiful shots of the new RSS cars in showroom. It should be remembered that assetto would be forgotten were it not for the work of countless misdeed and genuinely talented passionate people. If they were smart, kunios would create the underlying framework and just let people go crazy with it

The best bit about AC multiplayer is racing in old MX-5's or GT86's around some of the world's most famous tracks. I remember joining a classic DTM server with E30's and 190E's and it was such a blast racing them in Mugello. Side by side for the whole lap! I just wish those servers existed more often. There's too many servers dedicated to the Nurbgurgring.

I'm in the process of getting started at the old age of 70&3/4 years. Fourty odd years ago I campaigned a Mini in European Rallycross and feel I would like to try to relive my racing days. I'm getting kit together, a used PS4+, new LG 32" gaming monitor and have a used mini PC ASRock X300W Ryzen 7 7800G in the post from USA. I'm still researching steering wheels and am attracted to a low end direct drive model. I can't spend too much and would go for the old Asetto Corsa based upon your comparison for its less demanding graphics hardware requirement and sheer variety over ACC along with aftermarket modding possibilities. This video was very helpful to me, so thank you.

Exposure to ACC takes a big chunk of reason behind its popularity. After playing GT3s on other sims, despite me liking RF2's GT3 the most and definitely plenty of iRacing GT3 players around, ACC wins in accessibility and quality. It also helps that it's most likely most sim racer's first foray into GT racing these days.

I have hundreds of hours into both, for different reasons. ACC is great for GT3 racing with a bit more of a serious side. AC has so much more content and car types to choose from. AC is a much better game when mods are used. Probably my biggest deciding factor in which to play is the fact that I recently switched to VR. ACC is very difficult to run unless you have an extremely too end PC. AC isn't nearly as demanding. They're both must haves if you plan to get into sim racing.

I hope they fix the input lag on the steering on the console versions of ACC. No excuse for it. It wasnt a problem in the original AC on consoles, so i dont get why the steering is so laggy on ACC. Even Gran Turismo 7 doesnt have input lag in the steering.

AC without mods isn't worth comparing as the developers intended the game be played with mods, that's why it was developed the way it was while ACC was kept closed off from mods.

You should do asseto corsa modded vs acc. You missed on showing a lot of great improvments that mods bring like sol, pure, sound packs, also a lot of ffb improvements. For me ac is clear winner in many ways. If you want I can show you how to set everything up and you will be in love.

Great video as always :-) I like both sims but, I do like more ACC. The sound, physics, graphics, tracks, cars... Everything together is just a great packege. It's great to see that when developers focus just on small part of the whole racing it's better then try to do everything. I am very interested in new Assetto Corsa, but I really hope, that the support for ACC will be continueing. Becuase it would be a shame to stop supporting such a great simulator.

The real value of AC is locked behind a wall of technical knowhow, time, and effort. Out of the box, it makes quick sense that ACC has a significantly better experience to offer, but once you become truly familiar with mods for AC, it manages to outshine its modern contemporaries, even ACC. More tracks and more cars is definitely a huge deal, but mods go deeper than that. Shader settings, weather conditions, lighting effects, etc all add a significant new feel to the game. But just downloading mods and running them is not enough. All of that requires effort on the user to configure. It is no surprise that a 2013 era game requires some love, but if you do a quick search of cinematic AC videos or a demonstration of No Hesi servers, then its becomes really evident that AC is far more than just a racing game, its a driving experience well worth the time and dedication the mods need. Of course this is all on the pc, as mods are not compatible for consoles, and yes, even on PC, there are plenty of users who simply dont have the time to tweak mods to make the game perform and look as best as it can be, so that should always be a consideration for anyone looking into checking them out.

I have both and I play both regularly. ACC is the best GT3 experience and the multiplayer is better in ACC as well. Graphics are a little bit better on ACC if you have CSP and SOL installed in AC. Vanilla AC looks much worse than ACC tho, these mods are an absolute must have for me. AC has the best formula experience from all the sims I've tested. It's a shame the multiplayer is so fragmented into so many categories. AC is fantastic when you want to just drive something fun and realistic in a beautiful track. If I want to compete I go to ACC or RaceRoom.

I bought both. And ACC is definitely the more functional, more developed, and better looking racing sim... if you really love GT racing. Thing is, I quickly learned I LOATHE GT cars. So I only keep ACC installed for special events, and AC is and remains my main sim racing platform.

AC to me is if you like to drive fast cars, that's the one to get. ACC is if you want competition and structured racing within a single discipline. Problem with AC is it feels a bit too "sandboxy" to me as a racing game, to be I'll always treat it as a driving game. AC doesn't even have controller support (D pad menu navigation) I still have to use a mouse, its a bit dated even on the UI. But if all you want is to drive iconic or everyday cars on track, AC will be way more fun for you.

I personally feel more feeling emulating Gran Turismo 4 than playing most modern sims, and it's not down to anything like physics. It's more like the Gran Turismo series is an excited nerd that loves cars whereas most modern sims are like AI chatbots that know about cars. Maybe the chatbot's better at physics but it'll never be able to match the charm and shared excitement you get from talking to the car nerd.

The reason that "ACC" is more demanding, other than the obvious case of being years newer than "AC", is probably because they had moved to Unreal Engine. - That was a mistake, in my view, because... sure, while it has great options, it also has its issues, such as the never-ending stutter-issues (which I believe also "ACC" had an issue with in the beginning), as well as the more demanding nature of the engine. - Besides that alone, I feel that the recent trend of so many studios moving to a form of Unreal Engine is (ironically) a bad thing for creativity, because it's just going to homogenize videogames and make a lot of them somewhat look and feel the same or at least similar. While some people are even hoping that Kunos will have moved "back" to their own proprietary engine for "AC2", I highly doubt that as they've invested so much in developing and improving the tech for "ACC", they've probably kept developing on all the work they've already done for it. - But while it's Unreal Engine once again, I feel like it will be their most polished product to date. And this without being "hyped" or being a "fanboy", because I haven't played either of these games, but just considering what they've done with both of them, I don't think they would release like a shoddy UE-based game now that they've cracked it for the latter one. - UNLESS, I'm totally off-base here and "Competizione" is more like a one-off and they'll have built upon the first game as "AC2" will be more like a follow-up to THAT. - Unless, in turn, it might have been so dated by the time they wrapped up "ACC" that they didn't deem it worth going back to it and also just do "AC2" on UE. - Who knows! Actually, never mind, I did find an article that says Kunos claimed to have gone with a NEW in-house engine. - I really like that. - I was just under the impression that this was unknown to the public. So I guess they deemed Unreal Engine too much of a problem huh... Good, cause it is, and I'm quite tired of that becoming the norm.

You can keep a solid pace with mouse steering in AC, also I met a guy who played with smartphone gyroscope and held the record at Spa lobby on Schumacher F2004, so in AC everything is possible. .

i would prefer AC bcs. it can even look better with csp sol and a ppfilter wich is super simple to install. you have unlimited mods and if you download the right ones you can get all new gt3 and gt4 cars with very good physics like acc and big attention to detail. as well as fun mods or drive your own car in a video game. if content manager is installed also with makes the new interface nad with the right drift mods it is also VERY fun to drift espacilly with friends.

Interesting that they decided to call it asseto corsa. Another game did the same thing, the motoGP series. MotoGP 16 did a valentino rossi themed game, though they still called it "valentino rossi the game" instead of a motogp game, even branding it as the motogp of 2016

Glad you enjoyed it! That's a very loaded question.... Everyone will have different opinions. For me, I prefer the feel of ACC out of the box, but that also largely depends on equipment. ACC can be a little more forgiving, and I would argue is better suited for entry level sim racing equipments. You can be competitive with a budget wheel and pedals. iRacing requires a bit more finesse, and will come into it's own with higher level equipment (ie, direct drive wheel bases and load cell pedals). With iRacing, the car can feel tricky at first and sometimes the tyre model means you have to be very cautious to begin with, but once you get going it can be fantastic. No matter what people say and all of the different opinions, they are two fantastic sims in their own right.

I dont like acc, I dont enjoy driving on it, I dont like racing on it and I don't like how hard it is to run in vr. I love ac, I enjoy just aimlessly driving, I enjoy racing if I can ever find some good drivers, I love hotlapping on it, I love how easy it is to run in vr. I can play ac for hours at a time, I can play acc for no more than an hour or two before i either get bored or frustrated. I can't shift the feeling in acc that I dont have control of the car, I don't know what it is about the game but I find it really hard to feel and then react to the cars. I'll feel something go and then accept my fate. In real life I can feel when a car is coming out from under me, I have never driven a gt3 car before so I dont know if it's just the cars, but I enjoy driving the rsr 911 in ac and it feels like im in control. But also, im just not good at acc, on ac, I can take the top spot on wss time trial leaderboards with a couple of days of lapping, on acc I can rarely get within 2 seconds of the top spot, depends on the car though, gt3 cars I struggle on ac but single seaters I can take top spot. It's no doubt a lack of practise, but when you don't enjoy the practise then it's really hard to put in the hours

I’ve got AC, ACC, Automobilista 2, Project Cars 2, and iRacing. ACC is by far the worst optimized and is so clunky that whenever I give it another shot, I uninstall it within 3 minutes. If you have no basis of comparison it’s probably amazing. Their GT licensing really sings. If you’ve got 3-4 competitors you play regularly, the game engine screams as a total pig. I’ve tried it 😅in single monitor, triples, and VR. It’s such a half assed engine that I think the game survives purely on people WANTING a GT series so badly they will ignore serious issues.

It really kinda depends on what you enjoy the most. AC is a playground really, ACC is super competitive and F1 is kinda in the middle.

I play ACC on both, my only complaint is that you can't move the camera to the right stick on controller, so it's kind of awkward to look around. Oh, and you can't change the gamma on brakes. And playing on m&k is the worst experience you'll have 💀

There are some tracks that are like normal roads (“Highland” for example) but there are tonnes of mods if you play on PC that will allow to drive in so many different places 😊

Sadly not! There will be ‘open world’ style mods for the pc version of AC, but sadly not on console.

Great video! I agree with most everything you said. ACC is certaintly the better simulation in terms of top end realism, however both of these are at a level where it really comes down to what you want to do with your sim racing. I would say for anyone doing sim racing for competitive purposes, ACC will be better because it caters to all out competitive racing, and its the best sim experience in that regard in terms of pure driving. Obviously iracing is better in other aspects like pure competitive offering but then theres the ridiculous pricing etc. Assetto Corsa (2014) however is clearly the better sim for anyone who is into sim racing in a non competitive way. That feeling of chucking a car around the nordschleife, where the lap time is an afterthought and the experience is more about literally having fun driving a car around a track. ACC cannot compare in this regard because of its narrow scope. In a perfect world, Assetto Corsa (2014) would still be getting official updates where the sound design and level of detail in the cars looks and feel would be brought up to ACC standards, but alas that is not the world we live in. A non competitive sim racer would certaintly enjoy ACC for its "fidelity" so to speak, however if money were an issue (often not the case with sim racers lmao), I would have to say Assetto Corsa should be the first buy simply because of its versatility.

I felt that UI would come up in the comparison between these two titles. My PC can't really handle ACC (I could use a work-around or two, but it's probably not worth it), so I've spent my time on AC, but I own both titles. The UI on ACC is much better, imo. But the Content Manager for AC more than makes up for the difference, especially when considering adding mods to the game. It's part of why I play AC so often. Though I wish I was driving on an updated tire model and more true-to-life tracks, what KS did with their engine almost a decade ago stands out. I agree that owning both titles is the way to go, if you're simply a fan of driving. There are advantages to both, and finding tens of hours of replay in each title is easy. Glad to live in a time where a many decent racing experiences are available from my desk.

Fantastic comparison, very helpful for me. I´m just getting into sim racing , I´m starting and already installed a nice rigid rig, I´m not into the table thing, and a TM300 RS GT. Now looking for what game to use. I first thought of the GT 7 , but I don´t like all that staff of collecting cars and getting credits. I want more a racing focus game. From what I saw in this video I´m definitevely going for the AC because of the time attacks and Nordschleife options, both of them I´ve always like to experience. Actually I do time attacks in real life with my Camaro SS 1LE. And also going for the ACC because GT3 and GT4 are the only races I follow, don´t care much for the F1 because they are not real world cars in my view like the GT´s are. Cheers from Chile !!

@@TraxionGG i know this is an older video but I really liked it. I've played Gran Turismo ever since GT2 but I just started playing ACC. ( PS5 with controller ) I can never get a straight answer tho - since AC is for PS4, can I play it on the PS5 ?

The mods are what make AC, especialy Sol & CSP. Without them it looks awful.

From what I understand, consoles have never let you add mods. I own a PS5 and would have heard something from my communitys

AC with all the mods eg CSP, content manager, SOL and the plethora of quality car and track mods, is simply un-beatable as a sim title. The AC community is also incredible.

Assetto Corsa is literally a car sandbox, especially with the awesome modding community. It can pretty much do everything you'd want (except for rolling starts). Want a realistic race with detailled cars around lazer scanned tracks? AC has got you covered. Want to get a drift bus with 2500hp and drive it around Le Mans? Go for it!

Assetto Corsa 2.0 will be interesting. Hope they keep the DNA and the community spirit alive.
