0:14 When to limit potassium consumption
1:13 The toxic effects of high potassium
2:05 A couple more things you should know about potassium
3:07 The right sodium and potassium ratio
4:14 Summary
The first thing you should know is that you will rarely if ever, have a problem with potassium if you get it from fresh food-even at 10 cups of vegetables per day. However, there are a few exceptions, including if you:
• Have stage 5 kidney disease
• Take an ace inhibitor
• Take a beta-blocker
• Use potassium-sparing diabetics
• Have Addison's disease
• Have hyperkalemia
Now let's talk about extreme doses of potassium. When you have between 8,000 and 10,000 mg of potassium, you may begin to feel nauseous. If you are already low on potassium and you take something like 14,000 mg of potassium, this could be very dangerous. Keep in mind that potassium doesn't store in the body. If you do prolonged fasting, you can deplete your potassium quickly. To prevent this, I recommend electrolyte fasting, which is including electrolytes in your fast.
If you already are deficient in potassium, vitamin B1 can exaggerate the symptoms. I also recommend that you keep your sodium and potassium levels balanced. If you consume a lot of potassium without any sodium, that's going to be a problem. The same problem happens if you have a lot of sodium and no potassium. You need four times as much potassium as sodium, so make your you have sodium and potassium in a 1 to 4 ratio.
In summary, the average healthy person would have to take a tremendous amount of potassium to develop a problem of high potassium levels in the blood. If you have 1,000-4,000 mg of potassium a day, you're not going to have a problem.

Dr. Berg, will you please explain the differences, benefits and or dangers of potassium citrate, potassium chloride, and potassium bitartrate?
@bushpig6837
@bushpig6837 Жыл бұрын
Potassium chloride can and will elevate Potassium levels in the blood, so could be dangerous. Potassium citrate is the same form that's in food so is just "available" for the blood to uptake enough Potassium to reach optimal levels. I don't know about Potassium bitcarb. Best solution would be to supplement with Potassium citrate powder, you can add to morning water, increase gradually as it can upset the stomach until you're used to it. Once Potassium levels are optional then just salt your food to taste as having optional Potassium levels gives you a bigger margins for error with sodium. I do this, it has been a game changer for me.

I get some of my potassium from a lemonade I make by adding sea salt and low-sodium salt (potassium). I drank it once and got a headache a couple hours later that wouldn't go away. Took my blood pressure and learned that it was lower than normal. Gave it some thought and remembered that I had donated blood just a couple days before. Bit of an unusual circumstance but I think it's worth pointing out that potassium can lower blood pressure. That's good for a lot of people but if you have normal to low blood pressure or have recently given blood you might wanna go easy on the potassium supplements and see how you feel before you take a fair amount. Just a suggestion.

Justme I buy potassium citrate in powder form. A 1/4 of a teaspoon = 1,000mg. Or LoSalt is cheaper and the same. You can add to your food, or I add a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon in my apple cider vinegar drink and add a slice of lemon. That amount then allows for potassium to be consumed in food.

Dr Berg, I am a Complex Case, inhaling Potassium from Two 11' diameter Recovery Boiler Stacks, i was the 13th on the Air Emissions Project to have a Cardiac event! A year later my serum Potassium was still high, and the ER Physician stated, lot's of you on that Project have high blood potassium! We we're inhaling Aldehyde the hsngover component of legal drinking alcohol which depletes B1, Thiamine resulting in all the damage of a hardcore alcoholic, including the tingling in the toes and fingers! I had become Salt Sensitive, but Thanks to your advice I upped my consumption of high potassium foods and the salt sensitivity has waned! It was scarry to do that because of the large number of tradesman involved! My cramping issue's have also decreased, being so bad in the past that I had to carry magnesium on my person! It took awhile but i learned the importance of electrolytes while intermittent fasting. In tracking my food intake with an app and even with healthier eating, i find the sodium is usually always higher than the potassium when it should be reversed. It seems deliberate in our food supply to not have these levels more balanced.

Be careful with potassium supplements. Dr Berg recommends people get it from foods not supplements. I took way too much potassium from his mix (it has almost no sodium) and got high pulse rate and BP. I was super thirsty which was my body sayign to drink water to flush it out. Blood test showed high potassium and low sodium. Went to the bathroom all day yesterday and today have no problem with urgency.

I consume about 1800 mg of potassium citrate powder as a supplement everyday. I makeup 100 vege '0' capsules at one time with a manual capsule filling machine. Each capsule holds a 1/4 tsp which has 448 mg of potassium which is 10% of the RDA. When I was starting my potassium supplement search, I bought a bottle of potassium chloride and found out immediately that it was way too salty to use as a supplement. LoSalt is an example of potassium chloride, a salt substitute which I don't use because I do not want to eliminate sea salt seasoning (sodium) from my diet. Sodium is just as important as potassium but I use the two like at 3:00.

Thanks again Dr Berg. I am doing so much better since I started KETO with you 4 months ago. I supplement my potassium by getting a 16 oz bottle of water and add to it a quarter tsp. of Nu salt ( pure potassium chloride) and a quarter tsp of Himalayan pink salt, shake it up the night before and then I have a cup of that water with my apple cider vinegar drink, instead of with just plain water in the morning and night. It taste great and I feel great too. I hope I'm doing the right thing because I feel great and seems to make me feel better then just drinking the ASV with plain water.

Great video,bit if it's recommended to have 5000mg sodium on keto how do you have 4 times more potassium to get the ratio to 1:4 ?

Hi Dr. Berg. I follow keto diet. Just got my blood work done and my potassium is 5.4 level and slight high bad cholesterol. What can I do to lower without drugs?

So I did take too much potassium. I had too much salt in my diet so I used a salt substitute. I just kept putting it on and didn't realize it created physical repercussions until later. How do I dump it quickly? Do I have to fast? I don't really want to do that right now, I feel like I need to keep my energy up and I'm too fragile to do so.

Dr. Berg you should mention pheochromocytoma. High amounts of potassium while using spironolactone to manage this adrenal tumour can be dangerous.

I used to get my potassium from bananas alone. Since I cannot eat that any more :) Now mostly get it from veggies and avocado. I also put cream of tartar in my mix drink (Sparkling Natural Mineral Water, organic apple cider vinegar, organic ginger root juice, Himalayan pink salt, cream of tartar, and a lime) which I sip throughout the day. It helps me with the hunger and insulin levels.

Yes plz! I've been researching, trying to determine which form of potassium is best- or if it even matters much; potassium chloride/citrate/etc. I've read quite a bit saying potassium chloride is best for low carb eaters, but it's usually a report w/a product promo or such- so who knows for sure. Went to medical journal type sites, but they simply describe each form-errggh, confusing!

On a different video Dr Berg listed “potassium citrate”, but that’s just from memory from a few days ago. Maybe try looking up “Berg and potassium” on KZbin or his website

Is there a blood test my family doctor can do to check my potassium level? I have been suffering from migraines, heart palpitations, tingling and numbness in my toes, sleepy, and I do keto + Intermittent fasting. Please help! I take 500mg of magnesium, I drink 1/2 a tsp of Pink Himalayan salt, with 2 TBS of lemon juice , 10 ice cubes blended with water. I eat leafy greens, and Guacamole ..... what else can I do... and how long for symptoms to get better? TIA
