I spent sometime living in the Netherlands and some cities like Rotterdam have restrictions on certain vehicles from being able to enter the city based on age and fuel. I can't remember the specifics but I think, for example, diesels built in the early 2000's and prior aren't allowed into Rotterdam.

Even for safety, the railroad would never do that, for realism, you'd have to raise a couple of miles of track in each direction to ensure a shallow grade is maintained. Trains do no like slopes. Check out the 11foot8, it's a particular low railway bridge that regularly opens lorries like a can opener. It was only in 2019 that the railway finaly did work to raise the bridge... 8 inches, still 1 foot 8 short of being in spec, because raising it to modern specification height would entail raising too much track in each direction to be cost effective. Tacking a rail from ground level to 14ft in the air just isn't going to happen.

You'd probably expect to see the Big Rock Industrial Park to be shut down and the highway to be connected with the existing highway interchange infrastructure there. Then with the "dead land" between highway and rail (the space with the new interchange from downtown) a new industrial park with a bigger better cargo train connection as compensation. A large green belt of trees, parks and bike paths to separate that from the city/new residential green area that was created at the beginning of the video.

13:00 (timing to see situation )I guess if you add a bus or a tram lane that duplicates metro line the congestion you made at metro could reduse. Maybe not duplicate but complements metro, I mean people from left-up have got to metro first then go to right-up, if you were to make an straight connection between them it should have help. You already have a train route but trains are less flexible and have same problem - you have limited stop count. 14:50 Maybe a dedicated lane (or a whole system ) helps?

Your videos in general are really really awesome, thanks a ton for investing all the time and passion! I have a question about Interlining, already tried googling it to no avail, so I hope it is ok to ask it here. An answer from you (or anyone else) would be much appreciated :) It obviously has a couple of benefits, like being convenient for the passengers and possibly for the drivers and makes better use of time and resources. But I wonder why the signage changes (eg. bus 15 becomes bus 16, as Phil explained) instead of it all just being one larger route? What is the benefit of the routes being split into two that way? Is it just for transparency and legibility or are there other reasons?

having watched this after watching your Airport DLC video wonder how many people will use the airport zoning to level the terrain for setting up Motorways and then remove the zoning. 53:23 do not know if you loaded a save game or not, but the end of the motorway is disconnected from your industrial zone, so all your industrial traffic which would have just jumped on the new highway is now being forced to go to the small interchange you built further into the city.

About train tunnels, why do you not use slope tool and make the railway have a more natural slope before the tunnel entrance? i really hoped this highway was a tunnel.. Such a huge mountain is perfect for tunnel. The rest of the highway looks awesome sunken. 😃 About buses, if you have more of them to different neighbourhoods you really dont need so many. With only one line its going to be chaos. I really loving this series 😻

I don't play the game a whole lot so I'm not sure if this has any unintended side effects but using zoning adjuster I reserve right-of-way by increasing the zoning setback in the zoning adjuster tool. Obviously it's more cumbersome than a real world implementation so I generally only do it on roads I foresee having to upgrade later or being likely at least. But I found it's a nice enough solution with the limited tools that we have.

It kind of works this way. Where I am, you are seeing more EV drivers buying cars just to ride in the carpool lane that permits EVs that are not carpool (you have to pay extra than just buying an EV but this grants you a 4th lane of the freeway to use). Absolutely state policies can change how people drive. Imagine if you could get 75% off from a train pass if you only put in a minimal bit of driving annually (that you are not commuting by car but rather using the train) (I say 75% because the cost of train rides in the usa is so high compared to countries that focus on mass transit as the *only* form of intercity transit)

“The LA highway system is unfinished” Its always baffled me how the 710 ends, but 5 miles north of that ending there’s a mile long 710 stub where it was supposed to connect to the 210. Without that connection, a commute takes like 20 minutes longer. Or like how the 2, which is really Santa Monica Blvd, just kinda just skips a couple streets… and at one point shares a portion of the 101 to connect the road part of the 2 to the freeway part of the 2. They seriously just said “uhh… we’ll just make the 2 hop on the 101 for a little”. But we still have the 110 (north of the 5)… the first freeway ever built, and by far the most fun and coolest to drive. When they built it, they thought that drivers would get tired and fall asleep on long stretches of road, so they purposely built it extremely curvy to keep people alert. Also, most of the on-ramps are stop signs onto a 65 mph road with no dedicated lane to merge into. Scary, but super fun and smooth.

On Interlining: what do you call it when you have a route that used to be one number (say a long bus route) and then the transit agency cuts the route into two so you now have routes 51 and 52 rather than just calling it route 50? Then customers are forced to get off between 51 and 52 and make the transfer to the next bus (while paying again, which kind of doubles the revenue from this route). This feels like peak usa policies (breaking down the already bad service while not increasing service or lowering the ticket price to offset the requirement to pay twice).

Up until the roundabout went in on top of that hill, I think that could have been a reasonable place for a tunnel straight through instead. The slope is still pretty dramatic, even with the grading - plus, the land on top of that hill could be quite desirable. It would also really reduce the presence of that highway.

Wow, I had a totally incorrect idea of what interlining is. Your'e totally correct - it's when a vehicle from one line hops to another. I thought it was when two or more lines serve the same stations for a length, like how the MARTA Red and Gold lines in Atlanta serve the same North-South corridor before splitting apart in the north side of town (and similarly, the blue and green lines serve a common east-west line before splitting). Or how the Orange, Blue, and Silver lines in Washington "interline" through an east-west mainline through the city, before splitting in the outer parts of the city. Does anyone know if there's a real name for things feature of transit system? It's super common, especially in light rail systems (think PDX or DEN), so I fell liken there should be a proper name!

In London we have a few congestion related things: 1 - congestion charge - in central London, you have to pay around £18 to drive between 6am and 10pm (I think), every day. There are exemptions but the list is very small. 2 - low emission zone - this surrounds most of London 3 - ultra low emission zone - this surrounds a lot of London and if your car isn’t compliant (which most cars new than 2006 are), you have to pay. If you don’t have a ULEZ car and your drive in central London you have to pay both fees too. People tend to prefer public transport but it is very expensive.
@TAP7a
@TAP7a 2 жыл бұрын
The Underground isn't that expensive, certainly not more so than other cities' metros (not comparable in scale, sure, but that means the Underground is even better subsidised than them). It's an incredible asset for London, without it the entire city would be a gridlocked hellhole where the kids get pollution-induced lung cancer at 35 Overall, considering the externalities of car use and additional spend required to simply keep a car on the road, I'd say public transport is pretty cheap, but could be cheaper at point of use if we invested more into it

"One of the arguments that's made about relieving traffic congestion for the sake of green cities, is that idling releases emissions" This argument is fallacious and ignores the concept of induced demand, adding road capacity is never a positive for the environment as it encourages the use of a private car which is fundamentally unsustainable.

I wonder if removing the toll booth from the original collector will shift some of the traffic back off the highway? It would have a more even share of traffic using both roads rather than trying to use the interchange by the Forestry district. Also adding the other two planned interchanges giving vehicles more access to the highway will ease traffic in the future. Looking forward to the new DLC!

This was a really fun video to watch. You had a significant challenge getting that highway built and I think you did well. Two comments: (1) regarding the roundabout you created to join the highway to the collector: Couldn't you extend the end of the highway toward the beach and move that roundabout to where the T-Junction was for the collector? I think that would be a better location than the middle of that land area. (2) Rather than put in the ramps near the new power district which is rather tight you'll get more queuing by connecting to the highway in the curve across the railroad track.

Can you give any examples of real world arterial roads that aren't freeways? I've been looking for some around me and I can't find any good examples. At least none that follow hierarchy from your video. Closest I can think of (in Miami, FL), is South Dixie Highway but that one has local roads connected to it everywhere. The North side of it only connects to collectors, but that's not consistent and only because there is a metro line running alongside it. Congrats on Airport DLC video btw.

Interstates and Highways (in the US) are both arterials. Since most of the US is sparsely populated, you’ll often find houses and local roads directly off a highway, which is fine in general. The road is still used an arterial, even if it doesn’t 100% follow roadway hierarchy

@@DeletedUser410 Ah, thanks for reply. I wouldn't say Miami, FL is a sparsley populated but I guess that's why the highway I mentioned has some of the worst traffic in the city lol.

A great connection to the new highway would be where you trenched through the hilltop. Using the terrain as a overpass ramp

At 9:00 you move a ban over a highway, and there is no way to put it to a highway, the highways ignore traffic policies. However, some of what that area is is an asymmetrical road, and they DO obey traffic laws.

Auto tech chirping in here Idling is HORRIBLE for cars, and by extension, the environment. It's the least effecient your engine can be. So keeping traffic moving, at high speed, is actually better for the environment.

My traffic is at 58%🤣 I can’t get it to be better… I’ve added monorail and bus but that’s it for now. I haven’t really figured out a great layout to set up a metro

i think you would *love* the highways in MA near worcester, swaying up down and winding between hills, height jumping up and down. (sarcasm) also genuine question, boston "big dig" type things? like you put so many big roads through the city lol, i was thinking it the whole highway build. love the vids regardless of my own random thoughts and realizing why people dont like drivers from MA

London has the ULEZ which is ultra low emissions zone. Basically you have got to tell um you're driving within it, with what car, and they charge you a silly amount of money. Cleaner cars are cheaper, obviously.

Great video as per usual, but number plate restrictions are a terrible idea. We have those in Sao Paulo, in Brazil, and the only thing it has done was make it so that people have to pay fines if they have an emergency and they can't leave town if they live in restricted areas and want to go away for a long weekend/holiday. What actually ends up happening is people buy more cars/other methods of transportation with different license plates to drive in the restricted days (in Brazil's case, it's usually motorcicles or a used old car that ends up having higer carbon emissions)

I'm a little surprised the rail didn't end up recessed all along the older right of way. Frankly, I was a little surprised at the grade crossings when they were put in originally too. Safety, as well as function would dictate as few of them as absolutely possible.

That's going to be a challenging place for horse stables beside a busy highway and railway corridor. They startle easily and will be working with mostly tourists and people who don't know what they are doing around horses. Probably a ton of liability issues for them to remain in that location.

A great example of a city with bad road grid layout would be Cincinnati in my opinion. The population developed faster than roads could appear so at some point the roads were following foot paths people used to get around

@@m1nekji165 I would say it's almost the same ! But with one major difference: in europe they've had centuries to have roads where they're the most efficient possible based on people's use from walking to horse riding and horse carriages to horse buggy and the first cars. That's a lot of changing of the road paths and data imput over time ! (That is only true for general road corridors that exist since before the invention of the car, after that you can see tons and tons of bad roads as well !!) Wheras in Cincinnati they went from walking directly to modern roads and car centered layouts....

@@noemierollindedebeaumont1130 America bulldozed for cars, not built for them in majority of places. Car-centric approach sprung up everywhere in 1930s and onwards, but America went full ballistic with car-centric suburbs, demolishing of public transport and interstates in the city centre. Europe's approach were much different in many ways and didn't include building communities that solely relies on cars.
