Just got to your poor experience with the special events and yeah, TCS and ASM will actively make you understeer, hard. ASM is modeled as though your brakes are being dragged to assist stability, and it really affects the balance of the car, and TCS is super aggressive. I play exclusively with ASM off, and TCS at a max of 1 or 2, and it feels way better. Give it a try if you ever come back to 4!

Everytime i boot up that game, it's like muscle memory kicks in, before a race straight to the setup menu like a speedrunner, ASM off, TCS to 1, front bound +1, rear rebound +1, camber front 2-3degrees, LSD initial torque to lowest, limited slip acceleration and decel to 40. If the car is snappy into the corners, more camber front. If it's floaty and loose on the road, add suspension preload. If it's unstable at higher speeds, put 20kg ballast in the front, and remove 5 from the rear. @@djbrohawk Basically set up the dampers roughly, tune the springs for the right feel, then tame it with camber or weight, don't even touch the toe angle.

@@meusana3681one minor (and, for most people, unnecessary) correction, there is one car where you ABSOLUTELY want to change the toe angle. For some God forsaken reason, the Formula Gran Turismo (at least on NTSC-U, this is won in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring) comes with -6 rear toe. Do yourselves a favor and set that to 0 immediately if you’re going to do the Formula GT cup in extreme events. But also, don’t do the Formula GT cup unless you hate yourself or have tuned up your B-spec driver to where he can take over and win races after you qualify in pole position for him. It isn’t worth it unless you’re going for 100% completion lol

I remember playing Gran Turismo 4 when I was 15-16 years old. It had the subtitle of "The real driving simulator". And I got really confused when I braked way early in one of the tracks and got rammed by a car that was like 3 seconds behind me. So, I went to my Dad and showed him the replay and effectively asked "That's what real driving looks like? If there is someone parked on your street lane for no visible reason you just keep driving at the speed limit and ram into them?"

I have scoured the internet for the "best racing game with a sense of meaningful progression" and it always comes down to 1 real answer, Gran Turismo 4. Almost 20 years later 4 remains the best balance of gameplay and slowly upgrading from golf cart to a garage full of supercars. everything feeling earned as the markets kinda make sense and the prize cars aren't simply overtuned without investment. It's just so perfect, hope they remaster 4 someday soon, it's about time. LOVE the channel btw sorry you got me nerd ranting about this amazing game haha. Looking forward so much to the rest of this series it's a trip down memory lane.

Not that it's going to upstage GT4, but if you're looking for a game that did progression well, might I suggest NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona? Multiple leagues, starting with an inferior car in each league, and doing the best to earn money to soup them up. Strikes a nice balance of feeling every upgrade, but also feeling like superior driving can make up for a lack of upgrades. I may need to revisit that game even though I haven't finished GT5 or GT6 yet.

You probably know this by now, you didn't need to do the endurance race. If you finish mission 30-34 you get the Nissan '89 Le mans race car which is almost equal to the Minolta. However amazing video, I'm hyped for GT5 and 6 attempt.

Furthermore, the NHTSA recognizes those same categories and subjects them to different safety standards than "car" class vehicles. Sick run! Currently on my journey to 100% GT4. Something ill let you know for an alternate strategy is that if you can manage to beat mission 30 - 34 you'll get the Nissan R89C Group C car thats also more than fast enough to beat the GTWC and is a bit better on tires than the Minolta too, the only real hard one is mission 34 but with a fast, almost perfect run it's definitely beatable cleanly and have a video up on my channel cleanly beating it on NTSC it in case you needed a reference 😁

For a low buy challenge getting silver licenses is worth it, all the prizes have a use, A and I-A gold prize do have a use as well. Tandem drafting does work for driving mission 24, in all versions (PAL moreso) Throttle and brake on a stick axis does give finer control however you lose time transitioning from one to the other and this is slower in some places (130R in Suzuka being one example that comes to mind) having throttle on the stick but braking on a trigger is a decent compromise. If you were afraid using a credit limit instead would have made the challenge too easy you could've set that limit to 25k credits (a Tacoma + 9 oil changes), it's not even hard even if you're unwilling to drive dirty (unlike say a lowest amount of credit spent to 100% which would basically require driving so insanely dirty it would make a Forza player recoil in horror) The Pontiac Sunfire is a trashfire of a car, it's why you want the B silver license because the Mazda Kusabi is actually good for the FF challenge

Suggestion for dealing with the capture card if it has issues if you do this for GT5 and GT6 on the PS3. Record your saved replay instead of live gameplay. You can also choose to save replays of failed attempts that you wish to show. Another important thing to note is that GT5 and GT6 save replay files to the game data, not the save data. I also had issues with my Elgato, but I think it wasn't the capture card's fault or overheating but rather signal loss due to not streaming every data packet due to having to use a splitter to get around the PS3's encryption. GT5 and GT6 had some interesting updates to note. For GT5, after updates, Skid Recovery Force is forced on in some events. This actually made the NASCAR events much more difficult as SRF would slow you down because of the banking at Daytona. When I found out about that, I downgraded my GT5 to version 1.0 by uninstalling it and not connecting to PSN when I reinstalled it. GT6 had a bug that wasn't fixed for a year where if you made a pit stop, your suspension settings would change slightly and your transmission would get shortened a little bit. I noticed in online play. I am not sure about offline play as the only single player races in GT6 that needed pit stops were the 24 minute races in the Super license. There was also a 24 minute Daytona seasonal race and a 10 lap seasonal race at a course maker track where the race would take over 30 minutes. Updates for GT6 also add events to do, so I do recommend updating GT6 to the latest version. I'd recommend GT5 version 1.0 however. GT5 and GT6 have a pretty good modding community that have restored lost content and hacked the course maker to remove restrictions such as the 10km course length and allowing crossovers with bridges and intersections.

I know what tires got recomended for the Minolta, since its clear what is the issue with that car right at the begin: "It chew the back tires like nothing" I also had to do that test and is always comes to Read: Super Hard and Front: Medium/Soft/ Super Soft. Depending on the race. You pit less most of the time and stay at certain speed if you can sacrifice speed over grip and consistency. At the end yo will probably had to do less pit stop in some of the hardest racing and endurance with this car. Also that is the way you can do 24 hours of La Sarte in B-spec and not die trying.

The Impreza rally car with sports tires can knock out Boxer Spirit on stock power, and the Super Touring Car can beat the event with the road tires that you don't need to pay for. They're both much harder but I've done both. Great video though, as usual.

Loving these challenge runs and the classic GT games in general, though I do raise an eyebrow at speedrunning's seemingly arbitrary definition of "beating" the game. Quick tip if you suspect overheating may be the issue with your capture setup, try pointing a fan at it (even a cheap plastic box fan will work). I have recovered data from multiple marginally failing HDDs this way, and it used to be a go to trick for crappy NAT routers at LAN parties :)

Show me the end credits = beating the game, for better or worse :) - it's just kind of an arbitrary goal for these videos I'll keep that in mind for the capture card, I don't have a really good spot for a fan but I'll see what i can do

@@djbrohawk Yeah I totally get that 100% is probably unreasonable for these, mostly because endurance racing. Especially in the case of GT4 and its 24 hour races. I mean B-Spec is a thing, but still, that wouldn't exactly make for an interesting challenge if half of the racing is load up an OP car and go AFK for 8 hours with B-Spec on 4x. When it comes to challenge runs I think the theorycrafting is sometimes more interesting than the actual racing. I for one would be completely good with the answer of "I have a ridiculously good car for this race, winning it is a given, no need to actually drive it to prove the point". Also, not all challenges necessarily need to involve beating the game. I used to love questions like how quickly can you get the best car in the game? (in the case of GT3, you can get an F094/s in 2 racing series and 3rd car in the garage that I've found). How high can you get your completion stat using only your starter car? How far can you get using only purchased cars, no prize cars? It can also be interesting to add additional restrictions to races, eg: how quickly can I get to and win the European championship if I'm only allowed to drive European cars? How can you get 100% while driving as few cars as possible? (not winning, but actually driving). You don't actually need to drive every race to prove the point, I would say skip the obviously trivial ones and actually drive the real tough races. eg: In my 100% minimum buys GT3 run I used the 94/s to win a ton of series that were gimmes. But the Zonda races, Vitz race, 80's sports car, those were actually really difficult and interesting. Just my $0.02 :)

The way the game works out a spec points is (every car has a point value encoded into the game, a 300zx is about 1000 points ish) the average opponents points - your cars points +60

With RR cars, you need to start turns on the outside, tap the handbrake, dive your nose to the inside, and throw your tail into a throttle-controlled drift. You should never even touch the regular brake.

There are a number of splitters that will perform the HDCP handshake but not encode the output video with HDCP (essentially stripping it). MLiG recently mentioned an avedio links splitter that works for this purpose.

@@djbrohawk if you plan on recording from a ps3 in the future, get a chinese usb 3.0 capture card with passthrough, i have two of them and they simply don't care about hdcp. the ones that are 4k compatible (can input 4k but only capture at 1080p) are good and cheap. i can capture directly from ps3 through hdmi no problem. just make extra sure that you get a usb 3.0 one, read the reviews to confirm, there are ones that claim to be usb 3.0 but are actually usb 2.0 and can't do 1080p60.

Couldn't you try the Nissan R89C '89 for GTWC? You win it from missions 30 to 34. Probably faster than unlocking endurance and winning the Minolta. Also, another trick for GTWC is to go aggressive with soft tires and pit more. You'll recoup the time loss during the pits with an easier and faster car to drive. Also, get super soft to qualify (you can qualify by setting up a time during practice before a race).

I stumbled on your channel earlier today from random youtube recommendation, these challenges turned out pretty entertaining to watch, I really like this style of commentary/rambling voice-over, so you earned a new subscriber! Question, I know you mentioned the capture card issues, but I wonder how did you record the previous 3 GT games? They all looked crispy clean and high resolution, were they running from an emulator, or maybe a different setup? Just curious because I came from the GT3 video and the video quality downgrade was brutal, to say the least, hahaha!

Welcome! I used an emulator for the first three - I used a backwards compatible PS3 for GT4, in part because I could just not get the graphics settings to cooperate the way I wanted. THEN I ended up kinda fighting the PS3 too, so it caused some fuzziness to happen occasionally. I thought it still looked okay though, but I can see where it might look worse. I do think the GT5 video won't have this problem, though :)

5:38 if its getting old.... like 4 to 6 years..... the thermal paste might need to be re-done i have a car stereo from like 2005 that overheats like CRAZY...... get 1 or 2 songs, then it goes into thermal runaway (gets so hot, you can burn yourself) . just need to take it apart, remove old thermal paste.... put new on.... maybe find a little fan

I'd love a PC mod (so I can use a wheel) with randomized prizes that scale somewhat with difficulty I played the first two GT games a lot as a kid but had made the transition to PC by the time 4 came out. Bought the game a few years ago anyway and used it to test a PS2 console I was restoring, ended up playing through the game because I couldn't stop myself :D These videos and challenges look really fun.

Reminds me of the nascar challenge in 5 it was so infuriating I spent like an hour restarting until the cars would get a lucky lineup so it was even doable. Rng gameplay in gran turismo like bruh.

It's funny how many challenges the truck championship ruins by default, lol. I have no idea why they didn't make that a manufacturer event or something sane. It's one thing to have trucks in the game (why), but even more bizarre there's a mandatory event with them lol

Because GT4 wanted to showcase a wide range of cars, that included trucks. Especially back then, when the devs made you try out different types of cars. And the SVT Lightning was pretty sick and still is.

Trucks in the game are cool (GT is the real DRIVING simulator after all) - but the mandatory event for them feels bad for our challenge runs haha

This Lancia Integrale is much more as you think of it. This mean machine won a whole bunch of races and championships. The Lancia Stratos too. This was the time of Lancias. Bella machinas, Cuore sportivo. I think the Audi Quatro came afterwards. I'm not sure though, it's been a while 😉 Hm jummy Lotus Esprit. What I like most is not that it can dive (J Bond ;-) but the shape of the cockpit that is kinda bent around the driver. BTW Umbria is on Sardinia. Hi little tipp if you do another challenge on gt4, you can change the throttle and brake to R2 and L2 , so you can use the triggers to modulate your braking/throttle. if you use an emulator and a modern controller (xbox 360/one, or ps4/5) that will work too

@@dinozzito2673 yes indeed, the ps2 controllers have analog buttons, but i believe the ps3 controllers dont have that feature. thats why i ment that he can re-bind them

I might try that! I was using PS3 controller which does have the triggers. That would definitely be better than the right stick though the right stick was MUCH better than not using it

Hey brohawk! There are HDMI splitters that can strip HDCP, or you could use component out and then a component to HDMI adapter. Personally I’d go for the splitter. I dig the content as a car and gaming guy!

Thanks for the support! I actually bought a splitter but it was a newer one that evidently doesn’t strip HDCP, I didn’t know they’d changed that, so I changed to the component to HDMI converter. I bought an older splitter that I think will work but it took a couple weeks to arrive and by then the run was over I don’t know whether that was causing a problem with my capture card or if it was overheating. I just think it was overheating because the behavior wasn’t consistent and I felt the capture card while I was messing with it and it was quite hot.

I just say vehicles to group cars, trucks, SUVs, buggies, etc. Besides, I think I saw something similar to this where the gamer tried to not spend money to beat this and wound up having to buy a 93k Cr Mercedes because they never got one as a prize.

Might've been me, I did a challenge like that :) GT3 is that way, you can't get a Mercedes via prize except for the Mercedes challenges (in which you need a Mercedes to do)

Evidently new splitters don't strip the HDCP anymore, you can still get ones that do but somehow I didn't get one that did. I use a component to HDMI converter instead - it works, at least

Oh, if you suspect your capture card is overheating, dip it in lighter fluid like its a chip and the fluid is a dip, play as regular, and if it bursts into flames, it's probably overheating. You're welcome 😊

Oh man it’s so goofy compared to the other three. You just have to let the AI draft on you and then when the AI slingshots you, you slingshot them back on the corners, rinse, repeat :)
