Excellent driving, Mr. Narrowstraight! I remember when Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima broke the 10-minute mark on the Race to the Clouds. Absolutely terrifying watching them go 125MPH around those corners on dirt. I live about an hour away from Pike's Peak, have driven that road several times, and the pucker factor at 45MPH is extreme once you get above treeline. And that's all post 2011, when the last bit of dirt was paved (too many lawsuits on account of goons going over cliffs).

I've driven up Pike's Peak for real (and did my ironing when I got to the summit; long story) and it's terrifying in a road car if you've never driven up a mountain and you don't want to get above 2nd or 3rd gear for the most part. After 10,000 feet you start to notice the lack of oxygen, above 12,000ft there's no vegetation and the air is very thin. Then you consider that people race up it......

That's why the dirt game series does Pikes Peak right. seperating it into 3 seperate stages that you tackle seperate, then starts combining them together. Makes it much easier to get to know the whole course that way. Last bit before final semi hairpin can be done flat out in any car in Dirt, if you get the line right.

Another great video, loving the content even more now that I have a Rift and can watch the video without being thoroughly jealous. Couple of ideas if you are ever struggling: 1. R3E Leaderboard challenges - this one is purely selfish, I was 9th on the hillclimb and wouldn't mind seeing how I stack up against some real talent. 2. Maybe a new hot lap one but at night or with inclement weather. 3. Some learn the track features, maybe something tied to F1 2018 since those streams get pretty big numbers and there is only one choice of car - maybe Jimmer's Pure Driving School? 4. Star in a unreasonably priced sim rig? There has already been Veronica and Marc Priestley, I think #blessed still has another month or so off.

Does the sim simulate air density? Could that have affected the downforce levels toward the end?
@HerraTohtori
@HerraTohtori 5 жыл бұрын
@Johnny Turbochargers compensate quite well for the low density altitude. The ECM is usually configured to run up the turbo until the intake manifold reaches a certain maximum boost pressure. When that boost pressure is reached, the turbo bypass valve at the exhaust manifold starts to direct exhaust gases away from the turbo, so that the turbo can maintain maximum boost pressure but not go over it (that would be bad for the engine). At higher altitude, the ECM will simply allow the turbine to spin up to higher RPM until it produces the maximum boost pressure - as long as the turbine RPM is within allowed limits. Typically with auto engine turbos, they are limited by how much boost the engine itself can tolerate without knocking issues. The turbo itself can usually rev up much higher, and at higher altitude that's exactly what happens. So yeah, with a turbocharged engine, you can expect them to retain their nominal performance up to a certain altitude. However, if you go beyond the altitude at which the turbine RPM reaches its limits, you need to have the ECM monitor the turbine RPM and prevent the turbocharger from over-revving. Otherwise, you can have the turbo either explode, catch on fire, or seize up - or a combination of these issues.
@Phos9
@Phos9 5 жыл бұрын
HerraTohtori I think you’re underestimating how high pike’s peak gets.
@HerraTohtori
@HerraTohtori 5 жыл бұрын
@@Phos9 Turbos can usually cover the difference, though you do have a point there. It's a pretty high mountain, all things considered. The course starts at elevation of 2,860 metres and finishes at the peak, at 4,300 metres altitude. The course elevation change is 1,440 metres. At the start, nominal air pressure is 0.704 atmospheres and at the top, air pressure is 0.585 atmospheres. Air density is not quite as straightforward as air usually gets colder with altitude, but the pressure difference between the top of Pike's Peak and sea level is about 0.415 atmospheres. In terms of commonly used boost pressure units, the difference between sea level and the top of the mountain is about 6.1 psi (pounds per square inch), or 12.4 inHg (inches of mercury). As I said, *typically* turbochargers are not RPM-limited, and their operation is usually instead limited by the maximum boost pressure that the engine is set up to use. The rest of the turbocharger's RPM range serves as both a safety margin, and in case the engine is operating at lower air pressure like in this example. So, the question is this: What RPM is the turbo normally operating at sea level to deliver maximum boost, and how much higher is the turbo's safe operating RPM? In essence, when altitude increases, the manifold pressure remains approximately constant on a turbocharged engine, until the turbocharger's RPM limits are reached (either by hitting a safety limiter, or by rapid unplanned disassembly of the turbocharger itself). For aircraft with turbocharged engines, this is usually referred to as the critical altitude - the highest altitude where the engine can deliver maximum power. The term applies here as well. However, considering that racing engines usually have less built-in safety margins than normal road cars, it wouldn't surprise me if this Porsche's engine had already bumped its critical altitude even before the start of the Pike's Peak hill-climb course. Anyone happen to know the performance figures and normal operating parametres of the Porsche 919 Evo turbos and what their absolute RPM limits are? That's pretty much the information one would need to answer the question conclusively.
@5000TQ
@5000TQ 5 жыл бұрын
@@HerraTohtori you are entirely missing the turbochargers density ratio and compressor map. As the ambient pressure decreases you are increasing the density ratio to maintain the same manifold pressure. You can only do that if you stay off of the compressor surge line, and you will be moving away from the compressors peak efficiency causing more heat to be generated. Due to the lower air density the intercooler will be less efficient which is now a double blow since the intercooler will have hotter air being sent through it by the compressor AND it won't be cooling as well as it did at the bottom of the hill. This means higher temperature air exiting the intercooler, which is yet another double punch to power since the hotter air is less dense thus produces less power AND the hotter air reduces the engine knock threshold probably requiring less ignition advance.
@HerraTohtori
@HerraTohtori 5 жыл бұрын
@@5000TQ I am aware of all those things. However, you are also missing something: Ambient temperature tends to drop as altitude increases. Lower air density does reduce the heat transfer capacity of radiators and intercoolers... but the lower temperature has the opposite effect. I can't say off the top of my head which is more important. The point about thinner air needing more compression is a good one though. That has many effects, from exhaust backpressure to increased heating of the intake air as it's compressed. Overall my point is, though, that turbocharged engines tend to cope better with altitude changes than naturally aspirated or single-speed supercharged engines that are always optimized strictly for one particular altitude. Multi-speed / multi-stage superchargers and variable speed superchargers have a bit more flexibility and can retain good power output over a wide range of atmospheric conditions.

Commentary is top notch, but it was the first of his videos i'd clicked on. I wish i'd known it was a simulation. Big lol at me!

Holy cow these sim things are looking amazing now-a-days. The only thing missing is the risk/ fear. I'm not sure how you could sim that, although it would be pretty funny like in a moto sim to have hammers that shatter your clavicle and a few other bones too after a high side.

Man its insane to even begin to imagine racing pikes peak this well. So fast you can't just be surprised by corners but theres 100000's of corners and at these speeds he just has to "know" the track

Jimmy, try to reduce the amount of lock of the differential under decceleration. Maybe this helps with those tight hairpins.

i don't know try using the e-brake? come into that hairpin with a little more speed and try sliding into the corner just a little bit to put the nose of the car into a good angle? I know that's not a rally car but is worth a try
