If bladed weapons were involved, wood armor would be better than no armor. People with no armor fare horribly against blades. A lot of people automatically assume that anyone wearing armor will just stand still and let you pound on them. No, they'll be moving around and defending themselves as normal. It's just that human bodies are squishy, and an unarmored person will be seriously wounded by even light blows from weapons that manage to land, whereas an armored person wouldn't be.

Great job and I'm looking forward to future videos.

Those strips, while being the right size for a canoe, are probably twice as thick as they should be for a corset. Which you seemed to discover when you hit the sides of the top. With a thinner strip, you can bend it the way luthiers bend the sides of an acoustic guitar; spray with water and rub the strip over a piece of pipe being heated from inside by a blowtorch until it softens, then clamp in place.
@stevenhillhouse66344 жыл бұрын
She might not have had access to a table saw or (good) thickness planer. Still, it does seem like an engineering/design oversight.
@ollimoore3 жыл бұрын
That’s true, certainly bending the strips would’ve been a lot easier this way. However this is a much weaker wood than those used in acoustic guitar sides, and there aren’t any exposed and unsupported edges (at these thicknesses) on an acoustic guitar body like there are on this design. She could’ve tried using water and a bending iron as you describe even with the greater thickness, otherwise under these specific circumstances I think she probably made the right choice.

Another means of doing getting a body form is: wrap whole body with duct tape (on top of sacrificial clothing. Cuto off and stuff the body cavity with foam. Fix with wire due to soft-body physics. But given the needs of stripping, your approach may be easier.
@kd5nrh4 жыл бұрын
More permanent is to use several just-too-small cotton t-shirts and layer them on, coating each with plaster and letting it set before putting on the next one. Then cut it off in 2-4 pieces and make a concrete positive. That pretty much requires two people, though, since the model needs to be really still through all the set time, and won't be able to safely saw off the casting. A good coating of vaseline or similar on all the skin that will be in contact is also recommended, as well as making sure there's no hair to get caught in the plaster. Obviously, choose your assistant wisely, as this whole process is going to be rather intimate, to say the least: you're going to want them to help with the shaving and greasing, as well as smoothing on the plaster and cutting the mold off afterward.

If you want to do a good and simple measurement, wear one of your older, tight fitting shirts and then use a stronger non elastic duct tape and cover the section of your body where your corset should be when applied as tight as comfortable for you. Then use a blunt ended first aid scissor and cut your tape covered Shirt from armpit to hipbone on both sides. Afterwards you can cut those halves in further parts when you need patterns to get it transfered to your wood. You should have toned your mid section a little. Would have suited you well :D

@blahorgaslisk77633 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised and impressed by this. When I saw the thumbnail I thought the corset would be made of layered wood veneer strips cut to shape and put down in two or three overlapping layers. Using this technique it's possible to achieve almost any shape, but the more complex curves involved the harder it gets to make the pattern for the strips. I imagine it might be a lot easier to do today though with the use of either a router or laser cutter and CAD to design the shapes. Note that I said easier, as in easier than doing it all by hand as compared to having a computer being able to help calculate the optimal shape of the strips and transferring the pattern directly to the machine cutting them. But to be able to make it out of slats as thick as these and get the it to fit together like that is what impress me so much. With the glass fiber and epoxy it should be extremely durable and the surface finish is superb. You've created a piece of art. As for the design it reminds me of something in a music video from the 90's, I think. I can't remember the song or the artist, though I feel like it could have been George Michael. From what I remember there was a model strutting down the catwalk who had a corset that had approximately that shape, but was made out of polished metal. What I'm trying to say is that your corset wouldn't look out of place in certain fashion shows. Now I have no idea just what they are trying to show at these and nothing they show is even remotely practical. But at least yours would be stylish enough to make the cut. Edit: Did a bit of searching and the video was for Too Funky (1992) by George Michael Turns out my memory deceived me. The corset I thought had a similar cut wasn't vey similar at all. It wasn't even made of metal, that was another model who had a metal headpiece, bra and bottom. It all looked a lot like it was designed by Hajime Sorayama.

Reminds me of when I spent some young days making "wooden armor" out of sticks and binder twine. (Xylophone Style) We'd whack each other with sticks and go hacking through the woods menacing the local skunk cabbages.

Amazing job on building that 3D form using a simple wire. I had expected some high tech process, like 3D camera imaging to create a wireframe which you could then use a slicing program on to get the forms. Guess I over thought it. 😄

As a costumer, I expected a duct tape dummy, but that wouldn't have worked in this case, and the form turned out awesome, as proven by the finished corset's comfort.

@@clarencejacobowitz640 i was expecting her to start with the same thing- but not actually use that to form the wood 😅

The Dutch would be proud of your wooden corset. They'd even throw in a pair of wooden shoes.

That looks beautiful. I've made corset top hats out of leather and the color is very similar. Very interesting form work. I may have to try the wire method in the future

Watching a young woman make a corset out of wood wasn't something I was expecting to need today, but it definitely made my day better! =)
