Can I have a legal tuck plate? What is size plate is legal?

My bike came with what I now know to be a 7x5 plate it was aesthetically pleasing and while not 100% legal I was comfortable enough riding around with it and never got any bother from the plod. Long story short it flew off or pinched a few days ago, I didn’t know about sizing and ordered a small legal plate from from JDM plates, size W 8.976 inches by H - 6.457inches. This size is the smallest I can go which is completely legal. I don’t like the look of it, after watching your video I just ordered a 7X5 plate

Hi Dom , you ok ? Fitted the tail,tidy and the new 7x5 plate last week and what a beautiful mod This Friday I fitted a small stubby Black Widow exhaust to replace the ugly ugly stock …. What a difference it makes . Absolutely love it and such a great sound .. feel Better now filtering cos they can hear me much better … so glad you recommend this bike to me fella and fir helping me out when my test stress was so high.. massive THANKS .

@@yodomcat OMFG! In Australia we aren't even allowed to run non stock rear guards much less put those plates on. They catch you with those plates here and you will be losing your bike on the spot, arrested and have to go to court to face King Charles III at a time that suits his majesty. If they see you "flip" or hide that plate and you will be wearing shiny steel bracelets and your pride and joy will be impounded. And don't even think of swapping out the factory original indicators!!!! Exhaust systems? Oh wow! OoH er!!!!!! Plod use hand held dB meters here and they will pinch you in a second if they are over the factory stamped dB level on your frame or in your handbook. While I'm at it. Burnout? Arrested and bike impounded. 60+KMH above posted? Arrested and bike impounded. Wheelie? Same. Knee down with sliders or not? Same. This is why I bought a 2022 CB125F with 10.7 bhp. Cheers!

Owner of Flip N Dip here 😅. Yours is also an adjustable tail tidy, there's not much difference in the eyes of the law 🤷🏻‍♂, except yours is really loose and easy to move by looks of the video. But as I recommend to everyone, keep your plate visible and you wont have issues... and for the extra worried people, I designed a locking shim, so you can lock your plate in the "on show" position, so it wont move if you do get pulled. In any case, enjoy your ebay jobbie, let me know if you need a bracket, I make the Gen 4 S1K brackets in normal and low mount, both lockable 😉

A lot of guys I ride with run your brackets, which are VERY well made. The shim is a great addition as the repercussions of the law can be quite severe as opposed to just running no plate. If you would ever like me review the quality of FnD I would welcome this (you can email me [e-mail]), but I would always need to highlight the full penalty if you forgot to put the plate back into "on show" position and the officer found out the plate was on a hinge with the ability to be hidden, etc, etc.

I appreciate your mods especially the HJR bar ends. The best mod I did on the exact same bike was getting rid of that ugly catalytic converter, replace with straight through headers and got dynoded. Increased the torque from 72.4 to 79.97 and you can really feel it in the mid-range. Here in Australia our number plates are a lot smaller than the UK's but interesting video and good workmanship.

Hiya mate, you touched on flip and dip plates. If i was to fit one and ran it with my plate clearly visible at all times is it still illegal in the uk as the plate is moveable ? I genuinely just want one so I can flip it up when I take photos etc like you mentioned haha. Love your vids and your insta account man! All the best !

If the copper knows what the plate is then unfortunately yes. However you would of had to of pissed them off or caught them on a very bad day. So chances are still slim actually getting in trouble. Know what you're saying for photos and for this reason I have duct tape on the back of my plate, but I also rode a whole day with the duct tape because I forgot to take it off! 🙈 Do that with a F&D and you're drawing attention. They won't catch you if they can't prove there was intent to use it on the public road but what they will do is nitpick every bit of your bike to catch something to ticket you for. Get a locking shim with it

She apologised, said her foot had slipped . Knocked off the number plate and split the fender in two Anyhow she paid for the new one . Could have been worse eh ? I’m ok , bikes ok ..

It strikes me that you're dealing with vacuum vortices as the air fills the space behind you, so the plate's something of a drag parachute. Would a fairing under the seat help?

thing is a tucked plate is still visible from the car behind. which I was told was still legal. (if you think about its still 45 degrees just the other way) then the police pulled up while I broke down and pointed out all this extra stuff (bec i trimmed the plate as I didn't want to waste space and i put a bare minimum reflector stud on it making out it was "obstructive".) tho I ride safely, I'll get a fine bec i wanted to look aesthetically pleasing but someone that rides like a twat will never face any repercussions from the law.

That said my bike got impounded because of my “small plate” which is 1” smaller… so that’s bullshit from the officer. But Glad your experiences are good

All depends on the copper and how they treat you and them. For example single line plates were no issue in Northants since forever but command from on high was no longer allowed, so lots of mates got a pull and £100 fine. Not the coppers fault they are just enforcing what they have to do.

Just ordered my 7x5 plate to compliment my new tail,tidy … Royal Mail now on strike ! .. guess I’ll be waiting a bit longer . Dom, I’m getting a black widow exhaust .. can’t spend any more, just the slip on .. is it an easy job as I paid for the tail tidy installation.. most people say it can be done in ten mins

Hey Pedro, it's an easy job, I have a Pro-Race slip on and it made a big difference. 7x5 I think is the perfect size between correct and being a little smaller.

@@yodomcat well , it looks easy on you tube , then again so does a tail tidy install. Most people however say tail,tidy is at least an hour, maybe more . Mine was done at garage , he said it was a great design (R and G ) well made but it wasn’t easy peasy and he had to solder one of the connectors for a perfect fit . The sv 650 exhaust is damn ugly , so it’s just a 200mm slip ,on from Black widow . Nice to talk Dom .

Tbh after hours of research, I think I’m going for the 7x4. From what I know, if I got pulled and it was the first time, it’s just a quick fine and then I go back up to a bigger size. Nothing too crazy like insane fines or points happen the first time, I could just take the fine on the chin and move on. Can I ask where you bought your plate if you remember? There’s lots of websites and I want to make sure it’s a good website I get it from.

That’s the conclusion I came to. Surprising it is that or no plate as the consequence is the same 😳 I get my plates from A1 Show plates online, remember to tick the box for the BSU number as I know of one guy pulled had a 7x5 plate but because the officer saw the BSU he let it go.

Gotta say I have never tried a tucked plate and did not even realize it was something you could do, would or can I be bothered probably not and the same with a small plate but I ride a classic kind of bike so it's just normal size .I don't say that small plates are not right and neither is a tucked one also a flip plate , now I do see the use but only if you had a button or switch on the bars to do it so as not to get in trouble .I am not sure how long you might get away with having a flip up plate , and if anyone does use them in that way ! but for me if that's what you want to do then best of luck to you . Interesting though 😉👍

In the states tucked plates are allowed. So when you buy US fenders (as they call them) tucked is an option. I LOVE the look, but must balance what the law will accept and not take the piss.

9x7. If you run smaller it is NOT legal. However most police don’t mind, depends on your area.

In the uk it needs to be facing out on display, so the tucked position I was aiming for in this video would be illegal, but still on display (so was hoping to get away with it). If the tucked position is to hide your plate then that is a massive no no and you can get a serious fine.

I don't think you answered the question. He asked whether it's legal to have a number plate on a hinge. So example your plate is in correct position however the police notice it's on a hinge and not a fixed bracket. Is this legal?

@@512460 if the hinge can be used to hide the plate, and that is the hinges intention, then it is illegal as you are intentionally hiding your plate. However there are plenty of rides on a hinge but once installed you cannot move your plate from the installed position without tools, they would be fine.

I've always had a 6x4 on mine and never had a problem I 6 years of riding and I've sat in front of the police as well. I only ever got pulled over twice at night coz they thought I didn't have a plate and let me go, but last year I get stopped and they impounded my bike which I found out they didn't have any reason for doing that and just being pricks coz I asked them questions

Get caught with a flipper plate in UK and you're into dangerous territory. Could be perverting the course of justice which is highly likely to result in jail time on top of any fines & points for numberplate violations. Went out on Bikesafe with serving Met coppers on duty as observers and nothing was said about my small plate which is similar size to the one in the vid and displayed properly.

Doubt you’d get as severe as jail time, but deffo the easy £1k fine (which would only be £100 for no plate!). IMO it’s not worth the risk. Also Northants police don’t push on smaller plates - but they have clamped down on people running a plate on a single line (no matter the size).

@yodomcat You get done for attempting to pervert the course of justice, which is what will happen if you flip up a plate or they can prove you deliberately obscured it in some way to evade prosecution for a traffic offense, you're looking at a minimum of 3 months or anything up to 2 years. Not only will they do you for it but they'll put resources into tracking you down if you did manage to get away on the day where they wouldn't bother if you just had a small plate or got away without them managing to get your number because you're too far away. On top of that would be penalties for any infringement of the road traffic acts they wanted to throw in on top. On the plus side, you may well find any ban you get will have expired by the time you get out.
