I always look forward to your videos 🙂. My GSD had (past tense) a positive-only animal behaviorist and several different meds for his extreme anxiety. None of it worked, and I came to the conclusion we had two choices; accept that this was the way life was going to be, or try something else. Then, I saw your videos. Arctic is now off all the meds, and doing so much better thanks to the balanced training methods you teach in your videos. We both thank you! You’re the best 💕

@@Ms.OliversLife same. I bought into "aversives are abuse" and thus tried positive/"force free" and it didn't do crap for my adolescent dog. Balanced training did wonders and I learned that what works for some may not work for others. Positive only is great for foundation but balanced helped my develop and reinforce the expectation. My dog has some teritorial behavior still (being a cattle dog) but it's far less. I had one day where people walked by the house and she just watched vice barking. Granted she still barks but with e collar training and frequent training sessions, she has become easier to distract from a stimuli. Any training can be positive and safe in the right hands and mind set. Any training can be cruel and inhumane in the wrong hands and bad mindset. Find what works, be consistent and make it a positive experience for you both.

“Wherever the head goes, the mind goes.” How cool was it to see Bruce with no muzzle on the third day? Though it’s hard to hear how this obviously intelligent dog went through abusive behaviors with the ex, it’s probably a common thing or these fearful dogs wouldn’t be getting euthanized in shelters, right? It was beautiful to watch the transition from scary, lunging beast to curious, willing dog due to his caring, human mom taking the effort to bring him to Tom. Another great owner who did what it takes to improve the life of her dog. ❤️

Extra love on this video. This is exactly what Ive been going through with my Jemma. I got her at 11 months and she was reactive to everything. Been working with her for a little under 4 years now. We can walk trails and crowded areas with space with a majority of no issues. We still have work to do with "strangers" in the home but Ill be taking this neutral walk approach. She always did better meeting people outside first, so I think this will be a great step to help with that. Once she warms up to a person, she absolutely adores them. I can't wait to see if she decides to make more friends. Thank you Tom. 💜

It's very impressiv watching, how you manage every behavior in a way, that the dogs afterwards always show off, how intelligent they truely are. How you train the owners to do it exactly the same way. And every single time you're showing that that your training method really works for all dogs, no matter what race, age, gender or history. That's very impressive!

This training session with Bruce gives me hope. Our dog, Doc, has what seems to be very similar reactivity. Lots of positive reinforcement training and medication for the last 9 months, with little change in his behavior. We recently started with the prong collar and a more balanced approach, socializing at a local Lowes center in the parking lot and he seems to be getting better. A long way to go, still managing around the house.

For too long I have just accepted this reality because I assumed it was genetic (hes a GSD) and that he is just "that kind of dog". Hello, Hercy is our 2 yo Jindo who we love very much. He first started biting around 6 months old. He is a very fearful but dominant dog who has learned that biting is effective. He is both human and dog aggressive. We have not had another person inside our home since he bit my friend. He cannot be handled by anyone but me and Joe. He cannot be near any other dogs. When we bring him for vet appointments, he has to be tranquilized. His mom and other littermate have been euthanized for these same reasons. We've tried every approach: Traditional training, positive reinforcement training. He is even working with a behavioral veterinarian who has him on Fluoxetine hydrochloride and Gabapentin. So far, every professional has recommended that we put him down. More recently, we met with a seasoned trainer who specializes in aggressive dogs. He also told us there is very little hope for Hercules. On the flip side, he can be so playful, sweet and affectionate. He likes to run around the house with too many toys inside his mouth. He likes to rest his head against our lap when he sleeps. He always wants to be included in family activities. He loves his head scratches. He's our little bubba. We love him so much despite everything but are at a loss about how we can help him. Would be great if you could consider his case. Thank you.

At first this hurt my heart because I know not everyone has the means or desire to work with an aggressive dog. As I continued to watch your videos its given me more and more hope that I myself (and others) can help a dog correct themselves, not change them. My buddy, Ollie is the sweetest boy in the world until he gets to the vet or a muzzle tries to go on. As a pit/lab a lot of people passed him. I adopted at 10 months and he's coming up on 6 years. If anyone has any suggestions that would be amazing! thank you Upstate for everything you do!

Lots of information in one little video. My dog isn’t reactive aggressive, but fearful. She stops to stare at things. Positive trainers say treat her while he does this. But she truly obsesses over things then and tries to take flight. Your comment on where the head goes, so goes the mind gave me something new to try. You are the best!🎃

Another great video. I'm hoping one day to see content of Tom helping people inside their homes with dogs that have guarding reactivity. I know he described here what she could do when new people come over but it's always easier said than done. We're always working with our dog on not barking at people out the window, reacting to people visiting the home, etc. She settles down and goes to sleep but once she wakes up she goes crazy all over again.

Ya, I had this problem inside at the window, until it dawnd on me it was cuz I was allowing it. I started to treat it the same way as reactivity on leash outside... BUT when it WAS appropriate such as people trespassing, or "mail call" I had to praise her so she knew the difference. Goodness! Every kid on a bike, mom and baby in a stroller, dogs across the street...seriously?! CHILL! It took me a couple weeks of consistent reminding that a crow in the park is not a reason to lose her mind from behind the window. But it worked eventually.v
@olio723
@olio723 Жыл бұрын
@@sophiesmith5922 I'm glad it was able to make a difference! The problem I'm having is my dog engages in redirected reactivity/agression so if she's going crazy barking at something they through the window and she is totally ignoring my verbal commands and I instead go to take her leash (she wears it when loose inside because of her reactivity) she might turn around and launch at me. The best I can do is try to nip it in the bud before she even gets going. Her trainer said we will try ecollar to help her snap out of it from a distance so there's less chance she'll redirect on me/my partner

Amazing videos. I have been watching all your videos and trying the training to get my 5 month old German shepherd to not be so reactive to other dogs.

Just stumbled on your videos yesterday, love them. You are really great with dogs. Would love to see how you would go about working with someone who uses 1 or 2 canes/walking sticks and used a waist leach to walk their dog. Yep, me. Have a 8 year old Cane Corso who walks pretty good with a harness and waist leach. She listens mostly.....behaves mostly....typical brat sometimes... So yes, would like to see how you would go about helping all of us with handicaps who still want a well trained/behaved dog. Keep up the good work you are doing.

Great video Tom! I am training a dog in a similar mental state. Much smaller dog, and young. She's 11 months. I have been doing similar exercises with her, so this video is very helpful. Go from here? What is her prognosis? At what point will I be able to trust her in public without a muscle? If ever. When she is desensitized to people in public, what would be a logical next exercise for her?

I’ve recently changed my approach with certain reactive dogs all depending on how good motivated they are ! Instead of doing it the old way basicaly the same way that Tom is doing here, I instead, Try hand feeding to be able to lower their guard …and it’s actualy been working very well! A Lot of these dogs are just completely fearful and missunderstood and most importantly they are CONFUSED! They have been given little to no Actual Direction, and they’ve either gone through some kind of trauma.. have not been properly socialized,, have unintentionally treated for their bad behaviour.. so one part of them thinks that this is the behaviour that is wanted out of them, and another part is Fear ( as well as confusion)

Fantastic work as always. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong with my GSD. Any trips on for how to be more relaxed on walks. His reactivity is now very low in training. (With new dogs and people) But on a a walk. It’s 0-1000 in .02 seconds
