I don't think it would be worth it. Spline count is different on the output shaft.

What would the benefit be having the w56 in a 2wd?

Good question. The reason I wanted to do this is to get a lower gear. 1st gear at idle in the W55 2WD tranny is 6mph, which is too fast if you are trying to start from dead stop up a steep incline, and too fast when trying to navigate a bolder garden. By putting in the W56, even without the front axle of a 4WD, putting it in 4LO would essentially give me a granny gear for those situations.

Probably would take a lot of custom machining and fabrication to do that. It's kind of integrated into the housing.
