Keep up the great content. I enjoy your videos. I started running last year. 1st 5k ran a 22min. 1st HM ran a 1:40. Was planning on a marathon this May but have developed a knee issue that's painful only when I run for a while. Hoping PT can figure it out soon. Was gunning for a sub 3:30 marathon. Can hardly get 2 mile runs in now though. Good luck on your block. You got it man.

I celebrate your approach to strength training for the marathon and would like to add the following: for this, the maximum firing rate when changing from a one-legged stance is the most important thing and therefore maximum strength is the right way to go! The problem is that most runners have no previous basis for working that hard and therefore have to build muscle beforehand, which in turn leads to unwanted mass. But what we consider muscle training is interpreted very differently by pure runners anyway.

Very insightful video! I’m curious as to whether the low-rep, high-weight routine applies to upper body workouts as well. I’ve been doing the 8-12 rep range and this video helped me realize a possible root cause as to why my easy runs are getting slower even though I’m running 50+ mpw

I usually stick to the same sets & reps for upper body as well. This focuses more on neural adaptations (stronger muscles without adding size). Once you get above 8 ish reps you start getting into hypertrophy

Using just your heart rate for threshold workouts is a great start but if you really want to control the effort I suggest a lactate tester. I don’t want to explain it here but it’s really helpful.
