If things are so bad, why are used prices still so high? People are trying to get back the money they paid when their junk was new and is now well-used. They become convinced they will get their money back because they see what new is going for, so they sit on them for a few years. Now, they are leaking and stinking so bad that all they can do is haul them to the dump. They get no money back, and no one has been able to use them.

I'm in the market of buying my first RV soon. Everything you touch on today is right on point. Just like you're calling out these dealerships issues/ problems, manufacturers need to be placed on blast as well for the poor quality work. So far, I've narrowed my choice to a 2025 Flagstaff ROO (If you see one at the Hershey RV show, please get a review). It gives me more space with quality workmanship along with additional bells and whistles. Keep in mind that towables were not my original choice. I wanted a class A motorhome, but the cost is too much for a person on a fixed income.

One thing to remember is many years ago, a HUGE company said something about, “quality goes in, before the name goes on”. The rv industry is flooded with so many different floorplans, they lost focus on their original mission of the actual product, they wanted to deliver to the public. Prices are ridiculous for the basic storage and amenities of these products. I am looking to buy, however, quality workmanship and a decent price needs to return…I have a tent and I will use it! It used to be a practical market, until that returns, sales will slump.

I just traded off a 2023 Apex travel trailer for a 2024 Northern spirit travel trailer because of quality. The Apex was falling apart from day one and we had 20 separate issues 1 week after taking it out. We kept being told we will fix it under warranty by the dealer. It was new old stock. We said just take it back and order a new one. They refused and just kept dragging their feet and trying to patch up the junk. 3 months later we traded new for new and took a 15,000.00 loss. We were livid but had no choice. We are happier with the layout and quality of the new one but purchased full extra protection for stupid stuff that the manufacturer refuses to stand behind.

They "want what we have" But our camper is 20 years old and is made with 2x4s, real cabinets, and strong quality and because they are not seeing that in the newer RVs, they are now looking at older "used" RVs just for the quality itself

There was an era when some manufacturers were putting out quality. I'm talking about some Carriage models like Royal's International, Emissary and Carri-Lite, Teton Homes, Lifestyle Luxury, Jayco Designer around 2016-18, older KZ Escalade and some other fifth wheels. Covid resulted in the RV industry selling about 5 years stock in 2 years at highly inflated prices….many of those sales were to newcomers who are now exiting quickly…huge production with inadequate and poorly trained staff, fettered or overpriced supply chains have also turned many believers away from the lifestyle. Overcrowded State and privacy parks have contributed to the exit as some states raise prices and give preferential access to state residents. An emerging recession which is seeing lifestyle products (cars, boats, RVs) as unnecessary luxuries…A perfect storm.

I tell anyone that is considering buying one of these RV's, to think twice before you do. I can understand if you own one to live in. But to use as a recreational vehicle, they are not worth it. We just sold our TT. It was one of the happiest days in my life. No more forking out monthly payments, insurance, registration, and the biggest...maintenance. I feel like we hit the lottery after getting rid of ours. We took our last trip in ours from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest this summer. Gas alone towing ours was $1600 round trip. Then add in campgrounds. Yes, some were only $10 a night. Others were as high as $70 a night. Really? To park a camper for 15 hours or so. Then you have the issue of hooking up your utilities and unhooking in the morning. Add in dumping tanks and having to find a gas station you can navigate in and out of. I'm not saying we never had fun, but looking back we could have stayed in 5 star hotels on our last trip between the gas mileage and campgrounds and made better time. They are definitely money pits.

With RV sales and profits down good luck getting the service department stand behind manufacturing flaws. RVing can be a costly life-style. Our first truck with only 23K miles was a nightmare repairs included an ECM, bearings, injectors and turbo. Trading it in for a new heavy duty truck with an extended warranty was grand. The 1st used 5th wheel was also a big problem needed an axle alignment and other repairs. The new 5th wheel took 8 years before showing frame flex issues. If we did it all over again, we would buy a new HD truck and 5th wheel. The 5th wheel would be hauled to a repair shop and the front reenforced with gussets welded in place. We have no faith in a factory warranty even less in an extended warranty; for good reason!

The biggest single item responsible for the downfall of RVing is VALUE or lack of it. The price is not the determining factor but horrible quality and unwillingness to support products are the reason consumers have determined that the cost of these products require much more from their lives than what they receive, at any price. Those with cash will not buy overpriced and poor quality and those w/o cash will not or can not sacrifice out of their lives for overpriced and poor quality. So unless the corporate business model changes and manufacturers get smaller and mire resposnible, they can not survive market reality.

From frames, axles, appliances, furniture and other components if it comes from LCI it is sub par poorly made junk. Thank you for helping to expose the RV Industry. RIVA is part of their good old boys club and not pro consumer as they would have you believe.

You speak the truth! I have picked out a particular Class C (new) that I want to buy at a particular dealer. This model has been in their inventory for months and months. I feel the market, being soft, has caused them to price the vehicle higher than what demand would predict. It isn't budging and I am in no hurry to pull the trigger. First of all great content, I love how it's well researched and well thought out! Now for my $.02, for what it's worth, I think the problem is a bit more nuanced than simply quality issues or overpriced units...I think there's a problem with availability of use as well. With states / campgrounds also pricing themselves right out of business, with state and local governments making it more and more nigh impossible for cheap living, the market is drying up with respect to people willing to make the expenditure, especially when the overwhelming driving force of RV'ing was typically a cheap way of living. Even if the plan is full-time boondocking, one has to make a pretty heavy investment then in off-grid power, phone, internet plus regular expenditures ie., food, health, maintenance, backup fund, whether or not they're on fixed incomes...like you guys said, a tent on wheels $20k? Come on...go to walmart and buy a $100 tent for cryin out loud...the RV industry as a whole has to recognize their market and price accordingly, but I fear it's likely too late for that, especially the motorhome divisions, additionally the people have to protest their states overreaching on what should easily be publicly available land without ALL the danged rules and limitations, but with respect to THAT aspect, RV'ers themselves have to burden the blame as so many have literally abused it via trash, noise, nefarious goings-on, you get the idea.

Price gouging is at an all time high, and consumers are no longer so easily duped! They reap what they sow, and the market demand or lack thereof, will hopefully be the hard reset the industry needs to get back to sanity. I bought a truck to haul my aging 5th Wheel and I will gladly wait another 6-8 yrs, if not more, to even consider replacing my current RV.

After being in the same travel trailer for the last 15 years, we decided to look into purchasing a new one. We just came back from the 2024 Hershey rv show, and I was disappointed in how much they are asking for a travel trailer given that the quality appears to have declined. We have a minimum of 6 people in our camper, so we gravitate to bunkhouse models. Just about every model has angle cut the bunks, which makes it so 2 full-size adults no longer fit. I talked with multiple manufacture representatives, and they told me that they did it to cut down on weight and cost and to maximize space. I feel it makes the space unusable unless you have little kids. With the rising prices and declined quality, I think we will either rehab our current trailer or build out a cargo trailer.

I am amazed that more of the RV industry has not gone bankrupt. Years ago we started with a small Jayco Travel trailer. In retrospect, that was probably our best investment! From there we "upgraded" to a Thor Class C. Bought it used from General RV. Horrible experience. From there "upgraded" to a gas Class A. Entegra Vision XL. Horrible experience at dealership and Entegra plant. BLUF: I feel lucky to have escaped the RV prison. We had more flexibility than most since we owned our RVs outright. We lost money but it's worth it to be away from the nefarious characters that proliferate all levels of the RV industry ....

If we were in the market right now, I wouldn't buy. For a few reasons, price is too high, interest rates are too high, and quality is a concern. We have a 2019 Newmar Canyon Star and love it. We have been fortunate with very few issues. I would absolutely get any rig I was planning to buy inspected. I just did a quick search, they have 25 Newmar's in stock, half of those are 2023's. The highest discount was 35%, which is crazy. If they want to move them, they need to be at least 40% or more.

Fell in love with a thor class a, made a point to document model and options then set a plan to purchase in the spring. Retail on that rv was 120k rv show had it for 89k. Last year that same rv was 270k. It is now with sales, just under 200k. No thank you. Like many we just got priced out and are now doing other things instead. @@AmpedtoGlamp Yeah, I mistyped it was Medicaid. They say they’re “helping” by helping to spend down your assets so you’re eligible for Medicaid. The bicycle industry is having a similar slump in sales too with quality down for most and tons of bike shops closing. It’s a contraction from the COVID boom mostly, but RVs also serve a much wealthier older market so dealers and most companies took advantage while they could.

Hello from Australia. Very interesting and we are experiencing a very similar downturn. But here businesses have contributed to their own problems because they unreasonably jacked up prices during Covid and instead of saving their money they have spent it often unwisely by giving themselves large pay rises and investing in surplus inventory. Also, don't be sure that you will have a recession, or perhaps it will be very mild. Considering that you lost a million plus Americans to covid, the highest percentage in the developed world, that alone was tragic (and inexplicable) but also an enormous economic loss that in financial terms by itself could have plunged you into a recession. But it seems that the inflation the whole world is experiencing has been handled incredibly well in the US and you are now ahead of most countries. But that ain't going to save the RV industry in the meantime.

we just purchased a brand new 2024 East to West Tandara 321 RL-OK 5th wheel in August and have had multiple issues occur from the moment we drove it off the dealers lot. Not sure how many of the issues are due to manufacturer quality control or the from the dealer letting the ball drop on prep prior to delivery. We are currently awaiting parts for warranty issues that have been submitted and approved and then for the repairs. Fingers crossed this will all be completed satisfactorily by mid-November. We wanted to love our new 5th wheel but sadly it has been the cause of disappointment and distress for us. We had two other Forest River campers that we loved prior to this East to West, and we are just so very disappointed.
