Only the well-heeled businesses will make it through this. The US economy has been phasing out brick and morter malls and large stores for decades now. Can't compete with Amazon or any business that makes most of its money simply by warehousing goods and online selling. Younger generations are also not into "mall shopping" or in-person store shopping so that put the nail on the coffin of retail in USA quite some time ago. Plus the inequality in this nation between rich and poor has been growing, this equals less disposable income , so people have not been buying "needless items" as much for years now. When you live paycheck-to-paycheck you only buy whatever is needed to surivive, you simply don't buy extra clothes just to look pretty!

I grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee in the 50'-60's. A new "state of the art" upscale grocery, less than a mile away, was built on a main street near a high-school, a new jr. high civic center with library, a bank, several churches and not far from a beautiful River pkwy with an established HUGE public swimming pool and one of the first upscale large shopping centers. This was was right in a mature established upscale residential neighborhood and historic romantic town center. Up till then there just a couple of "old style ma and pa" groceries. It was an instant success! I was in grade school and enjoyed going with my mother to this seemingly exotic modern grocery store called KOHL'S. And the rest was history.... This was not the full service department store than eventually followed around the country. The original KOHL'S was sold, but is still in business as an upscale grocery in a very stable charming residential neighborhood with all the amenities. Location, location, location.....

These companies make clothes in third world countries, often using child labor, paying workers 20 cents an hour. Then these companies sell a shirt here stateside for $50, that cost $2 to manufacturer. I don't understand, where does all that money go? To CEO salaries? How is it that all these department stores are struggling, when the COGS (cost of goods sold) is nearly nothing, and store employees get paid barely above minimum wage? Yes, I know, there are fixed overhead costs, but again, the COGS is nearly zero.

Wow, CNBC! That long form Kohl's commercial was so nicely produced that it didn't even seem to include a disclaimer. My middle aged aunt made me go to Kohl's with her several years ago. It seemed as good as she hyped it up. Plus, she was buying. Awesome. Then I returned to normal lighting, and omg! What cheap crap! It reminds me of the low end department stores my mom brought me to when I was a kid, like Montgomery Ward and (yes technically) Kmart, where the rather steep full price new goods were discounted within a week or two. The success of Kohl's is tied completely to the ability of "Tarjay" upper working class middle aged ladies to believe that they are middle class and that the products they buy at Kohl's are just as good as what they would find at someplace nice, while refusing to believe that it's the same as TJ Maxx/Marshall's but with the in-store markdowns instead of the liquidation markdowns. I'm not saying that the self delusion of their customers isn't strong enough to sustain the company for a long time. Those ladies are as rabid in their enthusiasm as a new multi-level marketing rep, and with an ultimately very similar approach to "income" in the form of price discounts rather than actual profit. The problem is mostly in the ability of the company to keep the "markdowns" coming instead of bending to the pressure of investors who see things like this video and don't realize that the illusion of low prices for full-price quality is Kohl's business model. If I ever go there again, it'll be for an Amazon return, and maybe to buy some Jessica Simpson shoes. They still sell those there, don't they?

Their goal always should have been to make modest profit, but no, only enormous profits will do. Then they get bailed out from the govt. Which the Govt.won't disclose the list of companies they have sent money, companies like Khols take that money buy their own stock, pay their share holders and don't invest in their business to improve it or do anything nice for their workers. The whole thing is a game of overpricing paired with a few sales to draw ppl in. They really don't offer prices overall that the dwindling middle class can actually afford.

Kohl's has fairly nice merchandise and decent selection. I tend to shop there from time to time, especially at the Holiday's. Only downside is their complicated system that forces you to have a Kohl's charge card to qualify for many of the discounts. Kohl's is not competitively priced unless you do. The percent off coupons, you get in the mail, that are "randomly" 10% 20% or 30% don't seem fair, and they count on you not using your Kohl's cash before it expires. Next pitfall is interest rates in the 20% range if you forget to pay it off in time.
@SM-ie5xs4 жыл бұрын
Kohls makes money by discounting clothing, then when youre in the store you buyer higher priced stuff such as appliances, which is rarely on sale. But I just dont see demand for clothes right now, especially winter clothes, which they still have a lot of. They also made a mistake teaming up with Amazon. They put the Amazon return area next to toys in most stores, which means its hard to shop for toys. If anything I see Amazon returns losing them money. When a retailer has to heavily discount merchandise just to sell, that is a big warning sign.

Kohl's incentivizes shoppers with deeper discounts if they spend more and shop more frequently. Amazon offers free shipping at a lower threshold, but the clothing is not inexpensive. I buy some clothes on Amazon, but generally prefer trying on clothes to see how they fit.
@rachelle22274 жыл бұрын
My family and I have been long time Kohls shoppers. I haven't been shopping for clothes much since my early 20s though, since I don't need nearly as many clothes, and if I want something new to me, I can find shirts easily from a Thrift stores. For me, it's a matter of being green and saving money where it makes sense to. I have suhc an issue with finding jeans that fit and are long enough. I found some good ones I got multiple of from jcpenny since they actually fit. When I have kids, I can see myself going back to Kohls for children's clothes. I did order some joggers from Kohls a month ago, but they didn't list the length, and I had to return some of them. You have to do it in store unless you want to pay shipping. Unlike Amazon. And the clothes from Kohls generally take way longer to get than from Amazon. I think it would work better for Kohls if they team up with Amazon for their shipping network... I think getting clothes right away and returning them easily is important for something like clothes since you may get the clothes and they don't even end up fitting. So then you have to wait even longer to get a different size.

I new era will break out that online retailing needs to happen. Amazon is a good example, especially amid Covid, and probably the business model most retailers will be looking to for the future. Most retailers will go online with some physical stores for both modes of shopping. I prefer shopping at a physical store so that I don't have to worry about my credit/debit card being compromised. I can try on clothes with no risk, others would agree. Amazon lacks in that department. Maybe the competition level among all retailers will eventually even out.

I always thought it was like Marshall's or macys or TJ maxx

Kohls is like JC Penney. It is quite similar to Mervyn's.

I much rather pay a premium a Kohl's or anywhere else than support the retail apocalypse by shopping online. You know, to support an equal playing field for retail. A couple bucks saved isn't worth it.

Unlike some other stores. Kohls make a profit.

Kohl’s cash has always made them the best place for Black Friday deals. Bought my whole Google Smart Home setup there.

They mark all their items why up and then add a sales tag for the real price that looks like a good deal.

I don't think I've ever stepped foot in a Kohl's; not from a sense of pride but just never crossed my mind. Seen the signs everywhere but never really registered to shop for clothes there.

Maybe they had time to get their fitting rooms cleaned out and all the clothes back on rack.

This seems like the perfect time to invest in Kohl's stock while it is low. Everyone will be hot to invests in it once they see it shoot back up. So now is the time to get in.

The worst stock to invest on is anything related to retail.

With 15% off, and using $9 in Kohl's cash, you can buy a set of 3 boxers for only $16. WHAT A DEAL!! Considering I can buy the same at Walmart for less than $10. This company is greedy and overprices everything to the roof, that's why they're failing.

I honestly prefer JCP over Khols. Khols are way more expensive and their clothes are not even all that. JCP has prettier clothes and you get more awards and they have better deals on clearance and other items.

*The biggest challenge for Kohl’s is losing its standing as the whitest store in existence. It has competition: Abercrombie and Fitch, Cracker Barrel, Target, Pottery Barn and Trader Joe.*

I like Kohls. They do need to thin out some of the garbage clothes from their stores. Some of their stores have almost no walking space in parts of their clothing sections, because they have too much product and it can give you a suffocated feeling. I used to buy clothes from them, but I probably won't be buying very much clothes from any store this year...since I'm only going outside about 5-10% of what I used to do, due to the covid 19. I like the big discounts they give off that work with the name brand items they sell. But the restrictions Kohls and Macys have on some stuff will just deter me in the future from visiting their sale events. Stop those restrictions...

I went to do an Amazon return yesterday at Kohl's and they give me a 25% Kohl's coupon. It is a good move, but people would be more likely to browse if they stopped being like Bealls and reduced analysis paralysis. Get rid of mediocre product and only keep the winners.

There’s no time limit on when you need to do an exchange. Just a return. 👍

I dont know 100% for sure but how the stock market has indicated KOHLS is not only going to be ok but kick the crap out of its competitors. Personally I like TJMaxx much more. But the investors seem to think KOHLS will be more than fine and are betting their hard earned dollars on it.

Right now Kohls is the only place I buy my jeans. They also have good taste in clothes. Its like most of the things there were handpicked out just for me. I like that they play Christian music too, well I dont know about now. Anyway I pray most Kohls stores are around for a very long time.

only reason i’d go to kohl’s is for name brand shoes and maybe jeans. everything else is ridiculously overpriced.
