Just make sure you check with your local building department first. Some of my information might be outdated or won't work in every situation. That's also the reason I don't provide structural engineering or lumber sizes that will work all over the world.

Nice video I have a question though if you divide by .25 the floor joists are not 12 inches apart. Does that mean you’re going to get a slope under a 1/4 of an inch per foot?

renovating my kitchen, plan to run a 3" drain pipe through 5 solid wood joists of 8", the holes that run the drain pipe are over 3" Dia, so I want to use the metal joist reinforcement plate to support the joists. it is possible? Thanks.

Is the same calculation applicable for the Truss Joints or I-joists ? - Thank you!

Not really, but you can usually find more information at the truss joist installation instructions or their website.

what are the options for 4 inch ducting for a cooker hood extractor? not going to be able to drill a 4 inch hole in a joist thats for sure. and in my case there is no room below the ceiling to run it along the corner of the ceiling and box it in.

If possible better to drop down and tie into the waste line below structure. Remodel is a challenge.

I wonder if it's possible to bolt some 1/4 of an inch steel plates to reinforce the joists - that way it should be possible to drill without limitations

I've never used quarter-inch steel plates to reinforce pipes drilled through joist or seen it recommended by a structural engineer, if that helps in any way.
@AlessioSangalli

there are steel plates with a central hole designed to support joists. They are engineer certified and strengthen the joist more than sistering.

when you say you can drill a hole anywhere in the floor joist as long as its not the top or bottom 2 inches wouldnt going directly in the middle of the joist cause it to flex down? just trying to figure out the middle third you were discussing...
@gregvancom
@gregvancom 2 жыл бұрын
It could and I'm on your side with this one. I don't like drilling any holes and would suggest contacting an engineer for more information. This video was based on the information found in the International Building Code Books that are used by building professionals.

It's a standard construction method, but just to be on the safe side, you should always verify with local building authorities or engineers.

Hello! Do you have an email? I have some very simple (probably simple I woke think for someone like you) questions about a carport conversion and would love if I could pay for a short video call. You seem to have a lot of info. Want to enclose an attached carport to expand my kitchen before I update it all. Need to add in a washer dryer room mostly. Can't seem to find your email though... Looked on your site and the contract link in KZbin is broken l. Thanks in advance! I appreciate what you do!

After some more research it seems that footers of some sort are required. You can't simply build in top of the current concrete pad. It seems that would be a whole hell of a lotta work to pull up sections of the pad to pour in footers for an expansion.
