Can Li Auto's Tech Handle Urban Streets?

Li Auto is the latest Chinese car maker to throw its hat into the autonomous driving ring, so naturally we put it to the test on the streets of Kunming to see if their claims of urban autonomy could be achieved.
Unfortunately, their NOA system hasn't yet rolled out fully to Kunming so it wasn't capable of driving on normal streets, but we did learn a lot about how it handles urban elevated highways and what any car maker looking to do autonomous driving needs to be able to do if they're to succeed in China.

That looked much more stressfull than just driving yourself until you’re cruising on the highway tbh

It is, and that's half the issue with these systems. You're still responsible so you have to stay focused in case it messed up, so it's not yet better than driving yourself. I'd drive myself every time but I like bringing the latest updates to you to show the progress and variety between the brands.

@@InsideChinaAuto Have had a Model 3 for 5 years in the UK, I love driving but I use the autopilot on most drives, where it really comes into its own is on a motorway,. My wife though pretty much never uses it. Would be good to see you test the Tesla's current autonomous to see what its like in China and how it compares with the local competition.
@InsideChinaAuto
@InsideChinaAuto 2 ай бұрын
@@jasonmugridge I certainly will as soon as it's available here. I really think these systems come into their own on the motorway but in urban locations, especially 'Wild West' environments like some Chinese city roads are with scooters doing whatever they like, I just think they can't handle that. At least not yet. I'm not sure you can teach human perception like that, and if you train to be like a human, chances are you'll get imperfect human behaviour.

Quite interesting and actually addictive to watch, but we're not quite there yet, thanks for the video.👍 BTW if that was in Sydney road rage would be high on the list by other road users, Chinese driver's seem to be very patient.

Haha. It pains me to annoy other road users so I have to suffer in these videos to let the car do what it can do, though there are times it crosses a threshold even I can't take for the video. As you said, we're not there yet, but this isn't the best system in China.

The main technical problem is that the self-driving software expects other vehicles drivers to act and decide as the software does.

Interesting. My experience in my Xpeng G9 is very positive. I find it very useful for long trips and in situations where the route is not very clear: let the car decide 😂. In the beginning it was a bit stressful but xpeng has tuned the system a lot and I have also learned to know it better. A very capable system
@InsideChinaAuto

It's certainly a very capable system, though it's better in some cities than others. In the X9 I found out drifting off the lines on the highway, I think because that car has rear wheel steering which accentuates the inputs, so I think it won't have the same problem in their other cars, it just needs calibrating in that car.

Tesla FSD is level 2 similar to Li auto. Nio, Xpeng, are level 4 and BYD is level 3

@alphaomega1969 BYD definitely isn't level 3. They're barely level 1. Theirs is currently a very bad system but that'll change. They're working on it.

Give me a big clear display in front of me with lanes, junctions, etc. and on both sides of this, a monitor or section of the display which acts as side view mirrors ( to improve situation awareness ), with no obvious lag and i will do the driving my self. Oh and can i have that in a Mona 3 or leapmotors C10, pretty please.

Haha, so you're looking for an MG Cyberster display but with the outer screens as mirrors but on a car that costs almost nothing? I mean it could work. Nice concept. Now I know you've been watching my most recent videos, so thanks 😁

Can you legally overtake by the right in China?
@InsideChinaAuto

You can. In many cases it's the only side you can overtake on since everyone sits in the fast lanes.

Blue lights are usually seen on tuning cars 🤣 I was going to check out Li Auto but just the blinker sound is enough for me to skip the brand. I suppose there's no English system interface. Very interesting video though !

Indeed they are, but I know Li and Mercedes are both going with the lights for autonomous functions. I have a feeling I saw it on the XPeng MONA M03 too but only after I watched the footage back.
