December 2023, and I'm still rolling with the 8370 Black Edition on an Asus Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 board. Built the system in 2014. Handles everything I throw at it, was even running Win11 Insider until they pushed away "unsupported" CPUs. Win10 is fine, Debian 12 rocks on it. Running a Win7 VM in the background whilst watching this video. The dual GTX960s are the slow parts, but still manage decently in 1080p games. Most of the games I play regularly, like GTA V and WoW, are several years old anyway. When I got the class-action suit notice over the "not true eight-core CPU" controversy, I chucked the letter in the trash. I've never felt ripped off, and have gotten nearly a decade of value from it.

I run a 8350 on a Sabertooth 990fx with a GTX 980 due to financial strain and honestly I'm constantly surprised that it both A, still runs and B, runs fairly recent releases on high. Cyberpunk, COD:MW, Doom, all works perfectly fine for some reason beyond my mortal comprehension.

I've come to really appreciate the FX series. Don't have a 8350. but I do have a FX 6300 that I bought for my son several years ago. After I upgraded his PC, I kept the 6300 as my "tinker" box. Still have it today, albeit it's not anyone's main PC any more. All cores O/Cs to 4200ghz and currently paired with a RX 580 2048sp. Still games fine at 1080p even though it's not a gaming box any more in my house.

Dude, the test setup has some serious flaws. A lot of wasted potential. The FX CPU only supports PCIE 2.0, and the RX 6600 has support for 8 PCIE lanes. That means the GPU is using only 8 PCIE 2.0 lanes, which is equivalent to 4 PCIE 3.0 lanes or 2 PCIE 4.0 lanes. That GPU is severely bottlenecked on this setup. You would get much better results by pairing the FX with an RX 580 that supports the full 16 PCIE lanes. The RX 580 will get better frame rates than the RX 6600 on this motherboard. I actually have a FX 8300 paired with an RX 580 8GB in a backup system, and it can play anything. I am getting way better frame rates with that setup than what you're getting with your setup.

In the sense of wasting performance, you're 100% right. The scope of the video was mostly to figure out if the 8350 could handle some of these games at all. You've piqued my interest on this front though too. I have an 8GB 480 laying around that I'll be slotting in to take a look at, because I'm extremely curious now how much performance is being given up. It's also a good comment in the sense that it reminds everyone, especially myself, about why you really do have to think through what GPU (and other upgrades) you toss at an older machine. My mindset when I grabbed the 6600 off the shelf was just, "Oh, that's my fastest modern GPU I'm not currently using. Let's go with that." I didn't give two thoughts to the lane configuration of the motherboard and the GPU. Regardless, good point. I look forward to testing this further!

A great video Shane 🥰🤩😇👍KZbin channel RA Tech did numerous tests with the FX-8350 and a few other old AMD CPUs and found for 50-100fps at 1080p gaming was still quite achievable in many titles and a number of multiplayer fps titles as well. For a hobbiest, super budget pc builder, or a cheap Minecraft pc for the young’ins today ….. this cpu can handle these titles more than enough with decent quality settings.

I have an SDR unit that lets me connect my system to my big antenna outside and I can download and decode satellite data in real time with it... it's still not a bad chip even now, for things that are extremely cpu intensive...

I am running the FX-8350 with 16gig ram and the 980Ti , for 1080p gaming its fine and has yet to let me down . I was looking to upgrade to Ryzen a few years back but with the rather quick leaps they were making and the constant leaks on the next ones I felt it was not worth jumping to soon only to want the next +20-25% boost that was always just on the horizon. At some point in the next 12-18 months I will make the change once I am happy that 1. the build will last my needs for the next 6-7 years , and 2. the exploding CPU's are a thing of the past lol .

Enjoy being forced to run Win10 when you upgrade to Ryzen. There are driver hacks out there to enable NVME PCI-E, Disable win10 notifications and end of support upgrades and also the USB3.0 drivers (Hacked and working) but you may find that Steam now activated their infamous Win7 killswitch as of 2025. Used to work, but no more. If you bought games on that platform, you will no longer be able to use them unless you switch your operating system, which is theft in my opinion. I use a GTX 1060 with mine (Bought it for $40 on e-bay because it had no fan, but I fixed it with zip ties and a couple 90mm fans) and it games great on all the titles I used to own and no longer have access to because I enjoy using Windows 7. Won't be upgrading anytime soon as it is a great NAS box with my 15 hard drives. Yes, it is slow compared to Ryzen, especially with bitmining, I can earn $1USD /day with my 12 core Ryzen and maybe $0.04 / day with the FX, performance differences are absolutely off the chart. Even compared to Intel, it exceeds the performance anything Intel has to offer when comparing frequency and watts per performance, mostly due to the MASSIVE L3 cache Ryzen CPU's offer. They even started using 3D Cache to double their L3 past the 100Mb on one of their 8 core series CPU's, not sure what that would do with gaming, but they advertise it for just that. Only reason why I keep using the FX is because there is no Minux operating system running on a hidden CPU core which CIA use to surveil us. Intel since Core2Duo bundle those in concert to appease the Cabal. If anyone is targeted as a threat, their PC can have data implanted on it for fraudulent jailing of the threats. They have unfettered access to all your hardware and keyboard strokes regardless what software or operating system you use with their back door. And don't get me started with the vulnerabilities with Microsoft either, because they are even worse. Don't believe me? just ask Dutchsinse, he had several PC's bricked because he went up against the USGS. Watch Zero Days and Snowden. Even my buddy from CSIS divulged details which he wasn't supposed to, so sadly, Yea.. Thats my take.

Other than that. 1080p gaming with every thing else was just fine. This was one of the best PCs I've ever had. It has served us very well, and will continue to serve my nephew that will be using for university. This system will most likely continue to be used until Win 10 is retired.

Fx-8350 w/16gb 1866mhz ram and something like a GTX 1060, GTX980, R9 390, Rx 570/580 or around that performance (1080p 60fps) will do just fine for games. I know since i moved from my Fx8350 1 week ago (feb. 2024) and i was hitting arond 60fps on many games. granted, Dx11 games will struggle a little more, but nothing to worry about, still a very nice 45+ to 60 fps average with not so much suttering. Also you can (on an extreme budget) edit 1080p vids no problem (i would suggest 32gb of ram for that job) not to mention Photo editing (very decent render times in RawTherapee in my experience) If your budget allows for it... get an AM4 platform, shure... but if you happen to have serious budget restrains, aiming for an old 970 mobo with an Fx4300 and upgrade it to an Fx8350 might still be a reasonable idea/upgrade, allowing some casual modern tittles gaming and decent multitasking given a very low price.

Overall after 9 years with that chip i got wayyyy more than my money's worth for it. That paired with my GTX 780 has been great and im still not retiring the build. However i have a ryzen 7 5700x as of today, and im excited to see if i can stress the shit out of it. Though it probably wont overclock like the 8350. That chip just takes beating after beating

I knew a retired computer engineer (I think he worked for Samsung) that ran a P3 933mhz pc with a pci Nvidia 8400 video card up until he passed away, it had Windows 7 on it. He still fixed other people's much faster/newer pc's as a side hobby. I asked him why he didn't upgrade, he said it did everything he needed to. Answer e-mails, surf the net, watch 480p video (His lcd monitor was a 17" 1024 x 768). If you don't play modern games then you don't need much. Good video.

I built my PC back in 2013 with a FX6300, a Gigabyte 990Fx, and a GTX660, and have since upgraded the gpu to a 1060, and then to RX6600. It still games well, had some stutters with modern games and obviously bottlenecked the RX6600 real bad, even when the CPU is overclocked to 4.3 Ghz with a Cryorig H7 air cooler. Considering it's an 11 year old rig that still I still run regularly for work and gaming without any big problems, that's not bad at all. I never had a PC last this long on me without it feeling unbearably slow, but somehow the FX still felt okay after all this time. I meant to do a full platform change to AM5 last year, but some financial and life problems happened and that got delayed. In the meantime, the lowly FX still does its job well and can still give me 1080p60fps in older games, so yeah, I can say I'm quite pleased with it.

Every desktop in my house is still running on AM3+ architecture. I originally built the machines back when it was still possible to build a decent gaming PC with only $500-$1000. Today just a 'gaming' motherboard costs almost $500 without CPU nor RAM. Anyhow I 'maxed out' all my systems with 32GB DDR3, FX 8300 series 'Vishera' CPUs. The most significant performance boost came from GPU upgrades (the performance increase from PCIE 2.0x to 4.0x is negligible for gaming) and phasing out all HDDs and replacing them with Samsung SSDs. For my main system I got rid of the optical drives altogether (CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray about to go the way of floppies) and upgraded to a CPU/GPU 2x360 water cooled setup that runs virtually silent compared to the jet engine about to take off that it used to be. I can run every latest game there is on a water cooled Radeon RX 6900 XT (that cost me $1000 on 2021 but now retails at $1,300+ TODAY), even abominations like Forspoken, Clank and Ratchet's Rift apart, Baldur's Gate 3, etc. Otherwise I simply cannot afford the latest shit so I finally gave in and bought the woman a PS5 she wanted cause it's literally magnitudes cheaper than today's 'modest' gaming GPUs; there's a special place reserved in gamers' hell for whomever created crypto gpu mining.

Our 4 y/o uses my 10 y/o system to play lego games and minecraft. It is the fx 8120 in a sabertooth board with 32gb of ram and using the old titan x maxwell (2016) card. The gpu is way overboard for it as fx bulldozer/zambezi bottleneck the hell out of games regardless. None the less it is good, requires more power than my 58000x3d but it is still kicking and he will use it until it dies or he gets the am6 when those are out as we are skipping all of am5 and 40 series/70 series gpus out of principle. Long and short, yes it is great 1080p , no it isnt stuttery.

I always had ram issues with my FX-8350. It did not see all of its ram. I always thought it was the motherboard. Replaced with a Ryzen 7 5800x last yard but did keep my FX-8350 as a backup. I found a really cheap AM3+ motherboard with M.2 capability. When I pulled the CPU from the board, I found out why I was having ram issues. I appeared to have bent pins 10 years ago and had never realized it. Tried to bend the pins back, which I have done before, but one broke. At that point it was either except the loss for the motherboard or buy a replacement CPU. Decided that I would go ahead and get a replacement CPU even though I could likely get a Ryzen 5 2600 for less. Still cheaper than a replacement CPU and motherboard though. This new FX system has 32 GB or ram and is paired with a GTX 1070 and actually runs some games I tested it with pretty well.

This is an awful selection of games in your testing suite to the point that it almost seems malicious. CSGO is older than the CPU, the 8350 was literally the recommended spec for witcher 3, DE is a game that is famously easy to run - so much so that a *celeron* can get close to 200fps, and hogwarts is a last-gen game that runs on APUs that were made a year after the 8350 released. Really begs the question of what exactly is the point of this video. Of course games that were designed for that part will run reasonably on it, interesting insights are what it *cant* run for technical or throughput reasons. Why would you waste our time with such a boring thesis? (that's rhetorical, it's SEO bait).

I still have my FX 8350 as a backup system, will want to keep it as long as I can. It was really not a bad design, just not that performance compatible with how many games were programmed; for example, it performs horrendously in Resident Evil Operation Racoon City compared to an i7 870, but beats the i7 870 with a higher frame-rate in Dying Light 1. On top of that, the FX 8350 supports AVX instruction set v1, so it can still open most games out there. Games which are problematic with the FX 8350 is Far Cry 3-5, RE Operation Racoon City, StarCraft 2 late game, and DX9 Unreal Engine 3 game on Windows 10 with a pre-Navi GPU, but other than that everything pre-2022 sticks close to 60FPS or higher.

@hitbm4755
@hitbm4755 Жыл бұрын
@@hrayz It depends on the bin and also how good the airflow in your chassis is and probably also the quality of the motherboard, even if you have a gaming board. Sometimes I got a stable 4.6Ghz with my AIO on, with the air Wraith Cooler, my most stable option was 4.4Ghz. Overclocking a FX 8350 is not really worth it though, unless you can hit a stable 4.7-5.0Ghz, and even then it does not resolve issues in unoptimized games. Furthermore, one can rather run the FX 8350 at stock to extend its' lifetime. In my experience, L3 Cache is what makes the most difference in modern CPUs and one of the only things which resolves major FPS dips in problematic games.

@@hitbm4755 binning is always a condition. I tend to aim a bit conservative for long term stability. I've not had a Bulldozer run less that 4.6 GHz though. My current on has be at 4775 for 12 years. Between a close a friend and myself, we've been able to scrounge together enough parts to build a computer using the fx8350 and GTX 970. We've been slowly round robinin that computer to our friends to get them into the PC gaming community as their first build. Obviously, this gets them hooked, and we work out a budget to get them onto a newer platform. It's been a successful endeavor. When everyone has their own computer, the fx8350 build will be retired and become a plex server. So yes we've been getting plenty of use out of the old girl

Just do you guys know, AM4 coolers work with AM3/AM3+! An insane (and cheap!) upgrade for AM3 CPUs is to grab a second hand Wraith Prism cooler off of Ebay or a friend. They are overkill cooling for AM3 and look awesome as well. That's what I did before i made the switch to Ryzen, i threw an AM4 cooler on my Phenom x4 965be and my temps dropped by over 50%, it was crazy! Definitely gave my machine a new lease on life until I made the switch to Ryzen myself. I still use my AM3+ system to this day as a backup PC, visitor LAN gaming rig, an entertainment center media server. The temps hardly even budge from idle to load, never seen anything like it. So yeah, if you have an old AM3 machine throw a modern am4/am5 cooler on it and it will give it a new lease on life!

My main system is still a FX-8350 w/32GB1866. I bought a Coolermaster 212+EVO for $15 after a $5 rebate, and slapped on a second 120mm fan for push/pull from a 5 pack box of coolermaster 120mm basic case fans that I bought on sale for $5 IIRC. I have a 120mm case fan in the front, top, and back of my case. I run all those fans and the two on the CPU at 100% all the time. My idle temp is the same as light usage like just Firefox; mid to high 30sC. If all 8 cores are being maxed out it will get to the upper 50sC. The system has been running 24/7 for the 10 years since I built it and the only problem so far is I had to replace one of the case fans because of a failed bearing. No problem since I keep plenty of spares. I've never bothered overclocking because it gets the job done as is and I don't want it eating more power or heating up the room more. Hopefully I will be able to build a Ryzen 7800(not 3D since I don't really game and the 3D ones are slower at productivity) with 64GB DDR5. Like the guy before you said, I will probably make my 8350 into a media server because of all the movies and TV series I have. My current backup system is a Phenom IIX4 w/8GB1600. I only use it for turbotax and getting torrents from the pirate bay with my vpn because both turbotax and the vpn require win10 and I have win7 on my 8350 because I can't stand any win version above 7.

I build my first computer in 2013 that had an FX-8120 in it. Months later my motherboard went out and I RMA'ed almost everything except the power supply(it costed me $50 to ship it out and I couldn't afford that at the time). When I received my processor from AMD, it wasn't the FX-8120, as I was expecting. It was the FX-8350! It was awesome to get an upgrade like that without paying for it. I have had that same processor and motherboard to this day. Since then I have added more ram to 32 GB, upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 640 GT, to 1050 Ti, to RTX 2060 Super. I'm working on upgrading my pc completely slowly while I am currently looking for a graphics card that is a next level to extend the life of the computer for another two years. I was looking at the 2080 Ti as the next thing, I am still looking. As I am ok with the 8GB card for now, I am mainly focused on getting my pc parts and change the system first before the card.
