Yo don’t give up. Skating culture can be “elite” at times. They’ll throw around words like you are a poser etc. Don’t pay them any mind. You do you. If you can only ride without falling and that’s good for you, then that’s victory. Set your own goals.

Nope, you're not. Just got back into skateboarding after not skating since 2006(I sucked back then since I only skated for a few months). I'm 42 now. No reason to feel weird or awkward. Just do what makes you happy and let the gatekeepers be mad.

I was 42 when I for the first time ever stood on a skateboard. First thing I did was just learned to get on it and push. Everything after that was learning through braile and some tutelage from kids at the park. I'm now 2½ years into skate and ride ramps and bowls. Also being in my 40's, old bones knee braces, elbow, knee pads and helmet are a must

Ricky eluded to the shop vibe which has to be a barrier for some. I worked at a skate shop a thousand years ago (ancient times, like literally Bones Brigade era), and remember the nervous looks of people walking in to face ‘the shop guys’. But also could see the excitement as they stared at the wall of boards, knowing endless hours were spent in the back pages of Thrasher or Trans World deciding what to buy. Cool channel. Glad I stumbled across. Totally worth a sub.

As a new skater at 28 I relate a lot to this, though I lean more towards just cruising and hill bombing as a way of being active. I do have a setup for tricks, which I try in the backyard and can kind of tic tac, but a big worry is hurting my wrists because I work with my hands and kind of need them, so that is a big hindrance unfortunately. But I am determined, I'll just very slowly build up to doing more tricks 😅
@JustinThomasSkateboarding

Get some wrist guards and just take your time. Slow progression is okay. On your board daily will help a lot. Even if it’s for 5 minutes

@@JustinThomasSkateboarding Yeah, I do skate any day that it isn't raining, but I think the problem is I go cruising and my cruising board is different to the trick board. So I've been thinking of just slapping some cruising wheels on my skateboard to get better used to riding that particular board 🤔 But yeah, I do have and wear all the protective gear, but thanks for the suggestions! Definitely will be keeping at it 😃

I agree with others...get wrist guards. Cheap and they work. I'm over 50. If I break something NOW it might be really bad...I've always worn a helmet and wrist guards and....no one cares. People won't stare...or make fun. It isn't 6th grade. Protect yourself and your confidence will improve too

He asked me why dont you have elbow pads and i told him your knees and elbows can heal but your head is more important. i feel like i imparted some valuable advice to that kid.

I stopped skating for about 10 years and am now getting back into it. The thing with the falling, is that you have to (re)develop a correct reaction speed. You don't typically gonaround tipping over, so you're not really used to responding as fast, even if you know how you should respond. ...yeah, I've been trying to drop in before I should...

It's crazy how hard it is to actively ride around on a plank of wood with wheels 😅 you never really remember not being able to just stand and move around on a board you forget how difficult it's truly is untill you try to teach someone who's never even stood on a skateboard before, they tend to stand on it still and it shoots out from under them which I guess just shows how much fine motor skill is used just to stand on it haha

I think with many skills, people see others do it effortlessly then they think it's easy. Not just with skateboarding. As a sidenote, I haven't decided yet if I'm gonna start with skateboarding at all, as it looks scary and the skate park is like at the other end of town. And the best I can do is ask my friends if they know anyone who knows how to skate and can help me learn it. And I feel like I won't be able to learn it all alone from the internet. I'm 25 and never did skateboarding, but the thought of me rolling around town lives rent free in my head so much that it would be a massive improvement from just walking to everywhere.

Every now and then I do something similar to that to this day, but not nearly as exaggerated as she "purposely" did it....and it's horrible. I will say that no one makes fun of me...most skaters are so surprised at my age they are just thrilled to see me roll. Ha. I'm thrilled to roll. Not everyone has to be good....some of us just enjoy doing what WE are capable of within our own physical limits.
