I have one. As soon as I saw the kickstarter campaign I ordered it. This little box is absolutely phenomenal. The range of sounds available is almost without limit. It should be pointed out that each one of the sections on the mood knob is also variable. So once you hit a certain section and start going clockwise the clipping changes even within that section of the mood knob. The EQ section is unparalleled on any other pedal I have ever tried and I've tried a ton. And I will tell you, it Stacks beautifully with an overdriven amp. Or another Drive pedal. The heavier tones are impressive but this thing really shines low to medium gain. And as a clean boost it is absolutely unmatched.

@gtrman1263 2 жыл бұрын
@@smelltheglove2038 I mean yeah you can use it for that. And that is one of the big things people try to sell it on. But, I don't use it for that. I use it to craft unique Drive tones. Plus with the preset switch you can swap between two different Unique Sounds. So when the guy emulated the king of tone he could have done it on both sides. By saving a preset and then setting another one. Plus you have 127 more slots if you use a midi controller. Plus it's got that crazy 30 volt push mode. Which I haven't tried out yet. And I'm not real clear on how it's supposed to work. On top of that the EQ ability on the pedal is a lot more detailed than most. But yeah I don't use it to replace other Drive pedals because it will imitate them. Each one of those areas on the mood knob is also variable within that section. So you've got almost unlimited clipping possibilities

How is the feel of playing it compare to the original? It may sound weird but I had a ts808 n a walrus warhorn which suppose to be a copy of the 808. Tney sound pretty close but there is more effort need to pick/strike the string to get to the tone needed for the warhorn. The 808 are just more responsive than the warhorn

For someone who wants a single pedal to do a bunch of overdrive sounds, but who doesn't already have all those pedals to use for comparison, I think it would be helpful for a product like this to have pre-loaded presets or maybe a user's guide that lays out how to get close to those tones. For example, dial it in like this to approximate a Bluesbreaker, dial it like this for Tubescreamer, etc. Then you'd obviously have to adjust to taste and for your specific rig. Pretty cool bit of tech.

Mine arrived this week - I thought my search for a MIDI cabable drive pedal was over... Unfortunately the Ridge has one little flaw if you want to save and recall presets by MIDI. Once you saved a preset, you can no longer adjust it. Say you recall a preset, and it's to loud for the mix in the band. You CANNOT adjust the volume or any other knob of that preset. You have to build the sound from scratch. Your band mates will love you for that. Other than that, this pedal is incredibly great!

I used a Boss OD-200 for a while. It has 12 overdrive/distortion options including the original Boss OD circuits (OD, BD, etc) and emulations of others (like screamer, klon, brown, etc). It also provided controls to set up and adjust and tune the presets; and you could store the resulting changes into memory. There was also a way to stack/combine effects but I never mastered it. In the end I gave up on it and just went back to having standalone pedals on my board (screamer, ODR-1, klon clone, etc). The mutli-effects pedal was super powerful and provided a ton of features, but the amount of time I had to spend fiddling with it to get the tones I wanted was oppressive (in my opinion). And especially when playing live, it is just so much easier for me to be able to just quickly (and obviously/clearly) change from a screamer tone to an ODR-1 tone with two pushes of a toe... to suit the song we're playing at that moment. I'm not a ludite; and I am impressed with these multi-effects boxes-and this new one looks like an intriguing evolution of others already available-but I just find them too 'fiddly' and time-consuming for my purposes.

Great vid! I'm glad there are folks out there that are still innovating, while embracing the analog heritage...I'm using both modellers (as my amps and reverb/delays in a box) and analog drive & modulation pedals and I love it. Digital is phenomenal but there is something about glancing/looking at your board and knowing where you are at (at all times) with analog pedals...Cheers!

My thoughts exactly. Having checked their official site before watching this vid made me sceptical. The name, the marketing-speak (rolled my eyes at "augmented analog") and the sleek almost Apple-like look.. But I gotta admit, it's pretty innovative. And most importantly: it did sound great and pretty much just like the originals Paul had there. However I agree: I like to see at a glance where I am and how my pedals are set. I guess I could get used to working with the Kernom, but I'm not ready to fork over that amount of dough just yet and sell my other overdrives. (BTW this also reminded me of the Line 6 DM-4 I used 20 years ago. Back when I couldn't play yet and digital was a dirty word :D )

Here is my thoughts on the price of this new entry in overdrive; for 300 euros it is able to duplicate the Analogman KOT sound which for a used pedal is running between 700 and 1359 USD on Reverb/Ebay. Then an Ibanez TS-808 runs about 180 USD from Sweetwater Sound. Now for a real Klon Centaur authentic pedal if you can find one will run you between 5500 and 10k USD used and while the Ridge did not replicate the exact tone it did come close making it well worth the asking price. To duplicate 1500 USD worth of overdrive pedals with 100% accuracy means that there is 1100 some odd bucks you can spend on a midi control pedal, an amp, or possibly a new guitar. Its value is in its versatility and ability to clone other very popular signal paths without having to purchase an entire pedal board; instead you need the ridge and a midi control to access your presets for different tone and gain patches. So in theory if you have 450 to 500 dollars invested in making the Ridge you sole overdrive you are still over 1k ahead of the game for not having to dish out 1300 for the KOT and 200 for the TS-808 nevermind if it can duplicate a Strymon, Fender Blues Breaker, and other popular amplifier overdrive signals all from one unit; the savings just keep adding up and in an age where digital replication has become the standard goto it is nice to see this level of versatility in sound shaping from an analog unit. Just my opinion.

@0xDUAL

The Oscilloscope section was very interesting. It would've been quite interesting to see how closely the Ridge mapped the waves of the pedals you were replicating. I'm not at all clued in the science of audio tbh... but presumably that would also illustrate how close this pedal comes to mimicking others at least for the settings dialled in on that pedal at THAT time. And assuming that is true, I think it would've been an interesting test, then again perhaps that's just me. 😂 That said if it sounds close perhaps that's all that matters. But given how quickly you were able to dial some tones in I guess you had some sort of cheat sheet or spent some time beforehand trying to replicate the KoT or the TS.
@jada90
@jada90 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, would love to see a full oscilloscope rundown as this pedal's dials are moved. But I think he did a great job demoing the comparisons with his guitar playing; at certain points the two different pedals truly sounded indistinguishable, which, while much less scientific than the oscilloscope, was enough reason for me to be thoroughly impressed.

Oscilloscopes only grasp a moment image - and furthermore, only ONE frequency.. Making two identical waveforms doesn't mean at all the devices will sound the same. Frequency responses will be vastly different, not to even speak about the dynamics.
@0xDUAL
@0xDUAL 2 жыл бұрын
@@dries7547 This is the information I was wondering about. Yes I get that measuring on an oscilloscope is only a single frequency. and stringed instruments have a range of frequencies and harmonic overtones. It's a snapshot, in the same way a Kemper Profile is a snapshot of an amp with those settings and whatever pickup was used to refine the profile. But I think your second point addresses my curiosities. I assume you're saying that just because a particular component / pot performs a particular way in one circuit, it may not necessarily have the same degree of effect on another frequency when it is part of another circuit? Presumably that would come down to a variety of reasons be the specific component used, the various tolerances and variances within those etc. Probably a lot of factors beyond even that. Maybe I'm thinking to granularly with that assumption though. Thanks for your response! It's obviously something I'm not well versed in whatsoever so I'm happy to learn something new.
@edwardjons8684
@edwardjons8684 2 жыл бұрын
@@dries7547 Oscilloscopes show the wave form fluctuating over time, not a single moment. I agree that it’s difficult to use an oscilloscope to analyse multiple frequencies simultaneously, though not impossible if you focus on two or three frequencies that are indicative of a wider sound characteristic and display them on parallel screens/images above one another, or superimposed.

It’s all about the EQ when it comes to overdrives first and foremost.. and then how dynamic and how it clips the signal comes in second and third.

Very cool pedal so versatile and I think it really could replace all of your or my overdrive pedals ! I really loved that clean tone then you cranked up the Mood know and got supper compressed into fuzzland .....almost . That tone sounds exactly like Don Felder's Solo on One Of These Nights by the Eagles .....killer tone . Great playing as always thank you !

So annoying - just spent 2 weeks trying to decide on what additional overdrive to add to my rig ... between the Halcyon, Limelight and Longsword (all very different) ... and then Paul goes and releases THIS video! 😂😂😂

I’ve got the Kernom ridge and many klon clones. It’s actually hard to dial in to get the klon because of the way the clean blend works with a klon as you add or subtract gain.

Because I like to stack drives, I don't think this would be worth it for me. But, it is nice to have just one pedal that does all of the one-things so many other pedals do. I love to see digital knobs/brains controlling analog signal path and the many ways that ethos is being implemented in this current era of pedals. Keep 'em coming!

I also stack ODs: from 4 to 6 on simultaneously: slight breakups, great tweakability, and luckily no noise( guess I picked them well...) A good test for my pedal`s importance is to stomp it off and listen what happens, ha!

Great video. I watched it just after you released it. After deciding to build a smaller midi board around the Eventide H-90, I grabbed a new Morningstar MC6 Pro and ordered a Kernom as my only overdrive. It’s shipped. If I end up wanting another pedal for stacking or boasting, I’ll include the midi Golden Boy. Three pedals + the MC6! I’m excited to downsize and can’t wait to dial in the Kernom! Thanks!

I feel pretty much the same way about my Walrus Audio Ages pedal. I can get pretty much any style of overdrive out of it, so it has cured a lot of my GAS for OD pedals.

Hey Paul! Noticed that no one has posted on the community page in about 2ys. I'm disabled on a fixed income or I would definitely join your patreon and purchase your courses. Of all the good teachers on KZbin, such as Beato, Rhett Shull and such, I find your video presentations easier to comprehend. I've really come a long way in my guitar playing and understanding of what I'm playing. I would say that I'm an intermediate beginner lol...after 30yrs of the dreaded pentatonic boxes that I now understand. So thank you so much for doing what you do! I'm now working on memorizing the fret board. Knowing where the notes are and what notes you're playing really helps. I'm using the fret markers, 5th fret tuning notes and the 7th fret "tuning" notes and it's helping quite a bit.

For a little more and in the same footprint you can get an HX Stomp with multiple overdrive styles, and you can stack them in your chain. Plus it has a ton of amazing amp models and multiple choices of every other kind of effect too.

Ha , just saw some demo's of the HX Stomp : it sounds terrible digital. I've got a GSP21 from Digitech ( 19 inch ) from the 80's and I'm using that thing not for 20 years but I know I can make the same sounds with it as you get with the HX Stomp. The only difference is that the Digitech is bigger ; terrible overdives and distortions , beautiful other effects ( reverb , delay , chorus , phaser , flanger, pitsch shift , whammy etc etc )
@bryanvickers
@bryanvickers 2 жыл бұрын
@@Jef-sj6zc you probably saw some folks who didn't bother learning how to fine tune things. There are videos with Rick Beato and Rhett Shull tweaking settings to mimic real classic amps as closely as possible and it's nearly indistinguishable. Rhett and many other professional touring musicians have been using and advocating for Helix modeling for years. But you're probably a better and more knowledgeable guitarist than all of them. 👍
