Can We Cure 'Compleated' Planeswalkers?!? | Magic: The Gathering Lore

Tamiyo was the first planeswalker to be compleated by the Phyrexians in their war against the multiverse. Tamiyo will not be the last. As we watch characters fall to Elesh Norn, is there any hope in saving them? Can we un-twist their wills? Is there a cure to Phyrexia?

I think we will see nikol bolas compleat. He may have cured himself of an inferior form of compleation. Tezzeret, Ashiok and Tybalt I belive are still on the dark gatewatch. I think for their own reasons they will kill Elesh Norn and help nikol bolas become the king Compleat. Tybalt retrieved the God essence to help the phyrexians, Tezzeret is helping Urabrask take down the phyrexians from the outside so eventually he can use his portal tech and the phyrexians unknown portal tech (they one they used to go to Kaldhiem) to break Nikol Bolas out of jail. But Ashiok is our inside man when and how he contacted the dark Gatewatch I don't know maybe he is fulfilling that stereotype of wanting to join the team because he really wants to enjoy the world Nikol Bolas would have brought. Do you honestly think he didn't see everything in Elspeth's thoughts? It's all about timing, I don't think the elder dragon planned on being defeated by the gatewatch BUT he always has a back up plan.

First : I want to say I'm mentally and physically suffering each time I'm reminded of Tamiyo's fate. Second, let's explore options : - Tezzeret : I feel like he understand he may have gone too far, when he saw Tamiyo being compleated. It caused a profound unease to him, which he discarded, but it's a seed for betraying the Phyrexians. - The Sap of the World tree (Kaldheim) : I know, it's something the phyrexians acquired to perfect themselves. So it'll appear again, probably in a "bad" way, making Phyrexians stronger. Nevertheless, there have been instances of an enemy weapon being turned against himself. The Helvault sealing Avacyn. The Immortal sun trapping both Bolas and his preys. The Eternals, who ended up harvesting Bolas himself. - Urabrask : He is a wild card. I would not be able to tell what could happen if he interracts with a compleated planewalker such as Tamiyo, + you need to consider the "hive mind" part of phyrexians. - Halo : I can't say anything yet haven't read New Capenna's story yet. But I expect buddy Urabrask to take some with him, or maybe Elspeth (since she carry some in her blade). - Mind magic : Ashiok has recently proven that Phyrexians aren't immune to mind manipulation. While we have yet to see any lasting effect, I can say at 90% certainty that Elesh Norn will wish NOT to compleat Elspeth, but KILL her, because of that experience. Thus come the question : if the mind of a compleated one can be reached, can you make it's former self surface ? I expect Jace Beleren to try. And fail because it's Jace, but we'll learn. - Tamiyo's 3 scrolls : Another wild card, or 3 cards to be exact. We have yet to know the effect of any of them, and why she promised never to use them. The use on Innistrad doesn't count because of Emrakul rewriting it. Let's talk about her/it too. - Emrakul & Tamiyo : While it would be a BIG move to free Emrakul and bring her to new phyrexia, it's not necessary for us to feel her lasting influence. Emrakul has reached to the very core of Tamiyo's being in the past, taking full controll of her mind and body once. The shock left Tamiyo vastly affected for a long time, and may have never passed. A very thin possibility, but I felt like it would be interresting to be reminded that the Phyrexians are not the only "corruptor" in the multiverse. Any thoughts about all this Mr Aether Hub ?
@AetherHub
@AetherHub 2 жыл бұрын
Whoa loads of amazing points here. I tip my hat to you! One thing I’d add to the Tamiyo bit (and you went into it a bit actually) is that I feel people are hung up in her connection to Emrakul more than these forbidden scrolls. Emrakul possessed her but that’s all and there is not indication there’s a continued link. I believe Jace is more connected just from being inside Emrakuls mind. The scrolls though. We don’t know their origins or purposes (outside of one super powering her magic to seal Emrakul away). Now under the Phyrexians she’ll use them at the drop of a hat, which is way scarier and more plausible than Emrakul showing up.

I’m guessing Tezzeret or Karn eventually sacrifices themself to save Tamiyo. Returned, she better understands what Emrakul had planned, and frees Emrakul from Innistrad to destroy Phyrexia. Emrakul may have known this future. We find out the spread of Phyrexia is actually the reason Eldrazi are wreaking havoc on the multiverse - the only cure for the Phyrexian disease is annihilation of the planes they’ve infected.

I don't think we can "cure" planeswalkers, but deep within every phyrexian there are their memories and real personalities locked away either "sleeping" or "watching everything, but unable to act". This trailer, new lore, and what they did to Ajani.....makes me sick. I have loved Ajani for about 10 years when I started playing. This news really hit me hard. I always interpreted phyrexian oil as a disease. So recently....my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Not only that, she has had rheumatoid arthritis since I was born, complicating things. Due to the pain, she is not the same mom I grew up with. This card kind of reflects this, a character I know and love getting infected....this was the icing on the poop cake. Oh yeah also going through a breakup.....I just......on a personal level this sucks they ruined my favorite character. It also adds to the hopelessness I feel with my mom. I know I am shouting in the void for this...but maybe.... #saveajani . And what is the worst I feel pathetic for caring so much about a fictional character. I should not be so attached but gosh I feel hopeless, discouraged even. I really kinda....don't want to engage with my favorite card game anymore. I need something to cling to after my comfort character has changed this way.

I think it would be poetic for Tamiyo to regain her independence and betray the Phyrexians, sacrificing herself to assist in their downfall. Hopefully, unlike Eldrazi and so many other things, the Phyrexians chapter comes to a close. So much within fantasy/science fiction just keeps going because death is rarely permanent but I do think it would great to have an enemy defeated entirely without Elesh Norn, et. al. later returning. That's not to say that someone couldn't later uncover something related to Phyrexians, unleashing some further evil upon the world, but let Elesh Norn and the other praetors end.

Part of me thinks that an upcoming set in the future will be some sort of massive Endgame level crossover as a war between Planeswalkers and Praetors, and I believe Tezzeret is going to be the big bad of the war, our new Nicol Bolas. We know Kasmina is scouring the planes, searching for sparks and training planeswalkers across the realms to build an army to defend against another massive threat even stronger than anything seen before in lore, which is part of the reason she went to Arcavios to train Rowan and Will. After the war on Phyrexia, Vorinclex, Jin-Gitaxias, and Urabrask all left the plane. Sheoldred is missing and its unclear if she survived. Vorinclex went to Kaldheim when a planar portal opened in front of him. On Kaldheim, he compleated countless people and animals, and got help from Tibalt. He nearly killed the goddes Esika and stole a sample of tyrite, which makes the gods of Kaldheim stronger, and live longer, and is seen turning creatures into gods on the card Tyrite Sanctum. After gathering the tyrite, another portal opened, and sent Vorinclex back to Phyrexia. We're never told directly who made these portals, but its likely Tezzeret as he worked closely with the praetors and is considered an ally. Jin-Gitaxias traveled to Kamigawa with Tezzeret shortly after, where they researched compleating planeswalkers. Compleation is a process that makes the creature more powerful, as it replaces flesh and other organic parts with machinery. Tezzeret already has replaced part of his flesh with this sort of technology very similar to compleation. On Kamigawa, Jin-Gitaxias discovered how to compleat a planeswalker without destroying their spark by doing it on Tamiyo, but then The Wanderer cuts the praetor in half. Tezzeret takes Jin-Gitaxias's corpse back to Phyrexia where he is revived. Urabrask then was sent to New Capenna by Tezzeret, saying he was going to double-cross Elesh Norn. In Capenna, Urabrask meets and befriends Vivien and Elspeth, then steals the halo, which we know is a powerful source of mana. What better tool to use in a war than what is essentially a portable nuclear-power plant? Tezzeret also started out as a mono-blue planeswalker, but has also seen blue-black reprints. Black is the color of sacrifice for power, and although his most recent printing is still mono-blue, I think the search for compleation of a planeswalker is very much in line with black's ideals. With the three things gathered so far, one character who uses them all at once would be insanely powerful. Tezzeret has also been playing both sides of the Phyrexia/Mirrodin conflict. He is working closely with Elesh Norn, helping send two of her allies to other planes, but also told Urabrask he plans to betray her in order to get on his good side. My prediction is this: In one of the upcoming sets, we're going to see Sheoldred arrive on a new plane. Whether a planeswalker is explicitly named or not, I believe it will be Tezzeret who does this. On whatever plane this is, Sheoldred will find some sort of resource that can cure a creature of any ailment and bring it back to Phyrexia. Tezzeret will use this resource to remove his immunity to Phyresis before having Jin-Gitaxias compleat him. Now, as a compleated creature, Tezzeret is recognized as another praetor. He will then take the halo from Urabrask and use it to power his magic and create some sort of super weapon. He will then use the tyrite to turn himself effectively immortal, and that would bring him to a level on par of the Kaldheim gods. Planeswalkers are already some of the most powerful creatures in the magic multiverse, having all of these things combined would make him indescribably powerful as each one stacks with itself to launch him into true godhood, beyond the levels anyone has ever seen. Kasmina will arrive on Phyrexia and team up with Urabrask to fight Elesh Norn, Vorinclex, Jin-Gitaxias, and Sheoldred. The army of planeswalkers the first two gathered will clash with the army of the phyrexians. The planeswalkers win against the armies, but the praetors put up a much harder fight. Then, once both sides are weakened, Tezzeret will step out from the shadows, having manipulated them all from the start. Now, the only two groups powerful enough to stop him are too weak to do anything to stop him. The praetors and planeswalkers will then have to team up to take down Tezzeret, and this battle will result in many named characters dying for good, and result in a soft reboot of the magic canon. This makes sense from both a storytelling perspective, and a meta-playerbase-analysis perspective. As the MCU has shown us, people love massive interconnected universes with huge conflict payoffs at the end, and since WOTC is owned by Hasbro now, they're pushing profits harder than anything. Following the MCU's lead is a surefire way to make tons of money. They could use this conflict to sell packs with a guaranteed planeswalker again like War of the Spark, which sold really well. Additionally, with a massive nearly 30 year long history, magic lore is an extremely complicated web thats hard to get into, and magic has been pulling in a lot of new players recently. What better way to introduce new players to the lore than by hitting the reset button?

How freaking horrible would it be, if VENSER showed up again. Having surrendered his spark to Karn, to cure Karn of his phyresis, he'd no longer be a Planeswalker, but Karn having to personally deal with the memory of Venser would just be such an emotional kick to the balls, that I can't imagine Wizards missing this opportunity to throw him into the story, one last time!

I sincerely hope the answer to this question is a big fat 'no' - to cheapen this compleation by making it little more than a phase in a character's story would not only trivialize the threat of Phyrexia, it would further hammer home the absurdity of Gideon's sacrifice my reminding us again that, unless the _Corporate Overlords_ demand it, one's fate in Magic: The Gathering is entirely reversible.

There's one big problem that I see with the approach you're taking: the answer is obviously yes, because this is fiction. If the writers decide that they want to cure a planeswalker, it's going to happen, and they're not really going to sweat the mechanism that hard. They'll certainly try to fit it within the fiction, but if it comes down to it, the fiction will change if they want it to happen. That makes trying to analyze this based on in-universe data a pretty pointless endeavor, because that's not what's going to control here. The question should be: will any of the affected planeswalkers be cured, and will Tamiyo in specifically be? To answer that question, we have to look at the overall narrative and figure out what would be best. In that regard, I don't think Tamiyo is coming back. Tamiyo is an ancillary planeswalker - she can show up from time to time on planes that aren't Kamigawa, but she's always going to be secondary to the story. She'll be chronicling history, or she'll get mind controlled by an Elder God to put an octopus in the moon. That's nice, but it's not essential, and the fact that she is a very sympathetic character makes her a perfect target for elimination, because her loss will mean something without costing much for the narrative. She's done. I don't care what you can suss out of the fiction - it ain't happening. I'm disappointed too, because thinking about how that story happened makes me physically angry in a pretty disturbing way, but it's what makes the most narrative sense. This is also why Nahiri is a good candidate to end up in the crosshairs for this. Her utility to the narrative is finished at this point. Unless a new story starts that involves her, she's done. She's an established character, however, so her loss will still mean something without costing anything, so I suspect that she's going to be on the chopping block. Now, in the broader sense, will Wizards save anybody at all from infection, and there I think the answer is a hard maybe. The pieces are in place such that they could do that if they wanted (that's just good storytelling). Liliana feels guilty about Gideon and has been studying up on how to move souls around, which means that they could use her as part of a cure and build on her redemption arc. Having somebody come back also gives us a Locutus of Borg situation, where somebody other than Karn ends up with a deep personal investment in doing a genocide, or develops an understanding, or any number of other things that Captain Picard had to deal with. We only get one, though, and it's not going to be Tamiyo. Maybe Tamiyo is the first subject on whom the procedure is executed and it doesn't go all the way and she dies severed from the Phyrexians, but she doesn't live. What we'll get is somebody who's involved in an ongoing story (Kaito, The Wanderer, etc.) or a cover model for the brand (Jace, Chandra, etc.) who gets caught and compleated and brought back while any other victims end up dead or alive and still devoted to the Phyrexian cause. How that gets done is basically irrelevant unless the how of it will inform some element of the narrative. It's possible that the Gatewatch could turn to Bolas, but we just had a multi-year story deeply involving Bolas at every level, so I don't think Wizards will go back to that well yet. If you want a guess, I'd say that whichever substantial and significant character ends up in the mix will be rescued by some combination of Liliana, Tezzeret, and maybe somebody else. All others will die. I think this is where we lose Tamiyo, it makes sense for this to be where we lose Nahiri, and I wouldn't be terribly shocked if a couple of still-living-but-not-particularly-significant walkers get dropped as well. The how of it is irrelevant, though. Somebody will wave a hand and say a wizard did it (quite literally in this case).

I'm going to have to go ahead and say probably not, they break you to turn you into what they need, and then rebuild you. Even if they could cure Tamiyo's phyresis, she probably would be insane, sure they could just slap Jace in there to mind sculpt some stuff, but then you also have to realize how much of the body is turned into a phyrexian killing machine...I guess if the writers really wanted to start making people do miracles perhaps Teferi can roll back time in a set location and can somehow roll Tamiyo and Ajani back into their original states.

As much as Tamiyo is among my top most favorite planeswalkers, I kinda hope we _won't_ be able to cure compleated planeswalkers. There needs to be permanent stakes for a conflict to have any tension. All we got with the Jacetice League era and War of the Spark was Dack Fayden and Gideon dying and Bolas is in jail. That's it. No other long-term consequences. In fact, there was a long-term _gain_ in Jace no longer being the Guildpact because he transferred control to Niv-Mizzet. So as much as it would make sense for Elspeth and her Halo, Melira and her anti-Glistening-Oil ability, and Karn having experienced being cured, to work together to create a cure, I kinda don't want the writers to do it. Not to mention that if not even Urza and the Nine Titans as Old Walkers could cure phyresis, then the Jacetice League of neo-Walkers most certainly should _NOT_ be able to.

Well technically Karn wasn’t a planeswalker anymore when he got corrupted, that’s why he got corrupted. He gave up his spark to seal a rift and then since he didn’t have that protecting him anymore he was able to get corrupted. He originally wasn’t. Once his body was cured, giving him the spark of the planeswalker back is what cured his heart. So I think he would be a bad example for this.

Something else to consider: while being _compleat_ 99.999% of the time means being a slave to the greater ideology of Phyrexia, it's not a _100%._ Belbe and Xantcha (and Urabrask?) exist, after all. While *extremely* unlikely, it's not _impossible_ that an assimilated 'walker could be "talked down" as it were. I highly doubt it would happen, but it's not absolutely impossible.

Halo, angel essence introduced in New Capenna, is going to be the key to curing them. Possibly, it will reverse the compleation process that is happening to Tamiyo. However, its only a matter of time before she is beyond saving. A certain chip is making her believe that she is compleated, but really, she isn't yet. The Reality Chip may augment a planeswalker's ability to become more powerful and concentrated, but it also changes one's perception of beliefs and sight. The longer it is within them, the chance of them recovering who they really are thins out.

I think these ideas all make sense, but I think another possibility lies in one of Magics most favored girls, Lilliana. I think at this point we are doing a full rounded Arc for her, and I can see this entire thing coming down to a climactic fight of Phyrexian Planeswalkers verses the Remaining Gatewatch in a Civil War-esc fight, leading up to a White/Black Lilliana learning not to just raise the dead, but cure diseases and life. Is it wrong I am not really interested in this New Phyrexian War? None of the characters are as enjoyable as the old crew of Urza, Xantcha, Teferi (pre-Time Spiral,) Barron, and then the Weatherlight Crew from that Era, and the Phyrexians aren't as big of a threat. Planeswalkers after the Mending are barely on par with Mages like Teferi pre-Spark Ignition, or even Barron, so them having Tamiyo is about as threatening as having an archmagus was back when Planeswalkers actually were something. Also, calling Karn an artificial planeswalker is a bit disingenuous. Yes, he was originally a basic golem, but when Xantcha's Heart Matrix was installed, he became a living creature. Especially since he is a Thran Silver Golem base, which means that it actually grows and "lives" as best as metal can. And technically, he isn't even entirely that anymore, as he, Gerard, and Urza, merged and became what he is today. As well, he merged with a half dozen of the most powerful magical artifacts to have ever existed, since half of the Legacy was suffused in him, during the firing of the Legacy Weapon. The closest to an Artificial Planeswalker we have had, is actually, Yawgmoth himself, as he did not have a spark, nor did he ever actually become a true Planeswalker. He just became so incredibly powerful, and suffused with mana that he became an Incarnate of Black Mana. Now... that may have been retconned after Time Spiral novel series, cause it was a horrible idea, and the idea of Yawgmoth being a human so hell bent on becoming a God, that he nearly became one, is so much better, but that is by far the closest one we have.

The answer should be no but, WIZARDS is likely to pull some magical McGuffin buggery to ruin the lore...as they do

What about elspeth conquers death? if a life needs to be taken, would it not be interesting if they put it all on elspeth only to reveal she could come back & it might work ashiok back into the story too, as they where part of what hepened to elspeth

Is urabrask dead? I thought that elesh norn killed him, and that's why atraxa doesn't have red, for example, but if urabrask isn't dead (or if it's likely the goblins of the furnace remade him from fire or something) I could see Urabrask being a helpful piece in the war against phyrexia, even though he is phyrexian himself. I mean, Red is the color of vengeance, so He's probably feeling pretty anti-other praetors right now.

"Can We Cure 'Compleated' Planeswalkers?" *No*, just as Urza couldn't save Mishra. If a pre-mending Planeswalker couldn't I don't know why it's being questioned that anyone after the mending can. Compleation entails the total replacement of all organic parts of the body, until nothing but artifice remains.

I'm expecting either Karn or Liliana, maybe both, to sacrifice themselves to de-compleat any other planeswalkers like Tamiyo.

I think it is more likely that Tamiyo and other Compleated planeswalkers will further fragment Phyrexian society.

I think Emrakul, the Kami, and the moon silver key will be involved somehow. The spiritual nature of the Kami is in stark contrast to New Phyrexia and I don't believe for a moment that they understand just what exactly they have angered. There is also the descendants of the original hero of Kamigawa to keep in mind as they may have an unorthodox role here. The nature of the Eldrazi is to warp and I doubt that Emrakul is done with Tamayo just yet. Not only is the moon silver key explicitly is powered by hope but it has also been stated that it has an aggressive interaction with the glistening oil. There is also that new Dryad planes walker roaming around that may have a part to play as well.

Pretty sure its gonna be resolved via time travel and the brothers war, considering Mishra was already infected during the brothers war.

@@alucard8433 that would be a rather boring way to go about it honestly. Besides isn't time travel borderline impossible to do?

@@andresmarrero8666 Teferi can easily bend time to his will, not to mention throughout magics history many spells that exist that bend time. Personally i would prefer them to do more lore into the creation of the Phyrexians as all that we currently know is that an evil humanoid planeswalker that preferred the form of a dragon created them, and a month after his death Yawgmoth was teleported to that plane and found the corpse in the control room.
