This is THE BEST "will it run/revival" series on Junkyard Digs, and arguably the best one on KZbin! It's got it all, Mook (of course), a HUGE effort to get it to spin over, a HUGE effort to get it to run, and then finally we get the "pay off" when the series concludes with a HUGE effort to make it pretty again. As a added bonus we get to see Kevins dad get involved and it actually polished up nice (even if you aren't a big fan of the Cutlass). All parts are sprinkled with a healthy dose of humor an good amount of educational points for all the "will it run" amateurs out there. It's a benchmark series I'd say. Well done U guys!👍😄

Man I love the chemistry between Mook and yourself, makes the channel and it's nice to have eye candy who loves working on old junk too (without getting all Hannibal Lecter creepy of course), you're a lucky dude. I'd 100% do what Derek at VGG would do, you know she wants to run and it's proven this by running on that fuel. On that note, I think it's probably a combination of old fuel being just that good & how well stored the car was (fairly stable temperature range and no moisture = happy dinosaur juice).
@danmackintosh63254 жыл бұрын
Actually, thinking on it a while and given how original and complete the car is, maybe I'd check the numbers before trying to drive it home, might give some sway to whether you want to run it till rods fall out or not if it's all original.

In 1970 my great aunt purchased a 4 door Cutlass, same color body and vinyl top. The car was hardly (18k miles) driven until my 16th birthday, in 1990. As teens, my siblings and I shared the car. Together we put around 130k miles onto it over the next decade. I drove it to the junkyard in 2004 after the frame, floor, and body had totally rusted out. It would have taken thousands of dollars to get it in decent shape, money we did not have. Longest a car was ever in the family, and one of the most beloved. It's good seeing old "goldie" and glad you've taken on the project of looking after her. Congrats on the find... may she never let you lose a race ;) She never left me down hehe.

Good Job, getting that ole engine to start with 20+ year old spark plugs & wires, points & gas.. lol I knew that Rocket-350 would run, b/c those engines will take a beatin & keep on tickin.. Even when you were doing the compression test the psi was increasing. So hopefully after you've flushed the oiling system, the compression will hold & the engine won't need a rebuild. From the factory, those engines were built w/a stout bottom-end to produce torque. But the cylinder heads are low-flowing and notorious for oil sludge & burnt valves, b/c the oil has a tendency to puddle & bake on top of the cylinder heads. So a valve job does wonders to refresh these engines & a new set of hardened valves won't overheat on today's gasoline. Good Luck w/the new project, can't wait to see what happens with the Cutlass. My first car was a 72 Cutlass Supreme & it took a lot of abuse for a lot of years, but it always started. lol
@billywoodman604 жыл бұрын
Also I believe it is recommended when doing a valve job and gasket replacement. I've heard serveral times it's wise to discard the valley pan, in order to help oil from staying up on top of the engine during hi rpm's. Just a fyi I've heard.

I was the second owner of a '72 Cutlass, that I got in December of '78. The white interior with black dash and carpet was not uncommon for that body (mine had the "notched" rear window profile instead of the fastback roof--Coupe, maybe?). Mine also had a white vinyl top, but had a lovely dark green paint. Over the years I owned it, I converted the front brakes to discs from the four-wheel drum brakes that were OE (replaced the master cylinder, metering block, king pins, springs...all the necessary parts to do it right came from a guy who was parting out a wrecked one or were bought as new/remanufactured), switched to a four-barrel Rochester carburetor from the original two-barrel, went to dual exhaust, and put the 4-4-2 sway bars and other suspension bits in. I sometimes wish I had been able to keep the car and convert to bucket seats and center console, but, alas, life happened. I have no idea where the car has been for the last thirty years.

Use 2 stroke gas to run it instead of brake clean. it lubes the cylinders instead of drying them out and also helps boost compression as a result. has worked for me!

The first car I ever bought with my own money was a 72 Cutlass Supreme coupe with a 350 4bbl, and dual exhaust. I bought it in 80, just before I got married. I paid $1400 , it was in great shape and I loved it. I put big tires and Cragar SS aluminum slotted wheels on it and for my bachelor party they gave me a wooden sport steering wheel. Great memories.

Killiam Not telling him to brag about what he paid I’m just saying well I pick this car up for say $1000 or whatever because if I wanted to go out and get cars that look like a lot of the cars they work on I’m just wondering did they pay a lot of money for them a little money for them , Because sometimes he does see what he paid I just figured if you can see it on someone not on all of them no biggie though

Well now, that was a great ending to this series! Now that Mook has her Olds and a genuine hose clamp for a engagement ring, I think it is only fair and right that Mook get 'WhatHisName' an authentic gold anodized 'C' clip as a nose ring! Best way for Mook to keep him under control and pointed in the direction you want him to go! lol

If it was parked in '87, there's a pretty good chance it had leaded gas in the tank. Being that it actually ran off of it, you can pretty much count on it being leaded. I'm not a chemist so I have no idea why it doesn't completely evaporate or breakdown, but I have personally ran 20+ year old leaded gas. It's a shame the stuff was so harmful, because the shelf life on that stuff is crazy.
