Raff and Sascha, I really enjoyed watching your fiberglass repairs. I too learned a thing or two but there was one last step that I was praying that I'd see but didn't which I've used with boats I've repaired in the past. In addition to adding the new fiberglass, to the outside after I have the glass in place, you need to take measures to keep bubbles from forming due to the heat in many cases. So what I do is I add a layer of shrink wrap or peel ply to the outside of the repair, then put a piece of foam that will be crushed by a board or piece of plywood mashed against the hull to keep pressure on the repair and to make sure there are no bubbles that form. I then jack or use some mechanical force to compress the foam till the fiberglass and resin have cured. Once that's done, the shrink wrap will peel off leaving a much more compressed surface which should provide years of strength. Other than that, you are a great craftsman! Loved the illuminated wall you did in your buddies place that loaned you the initial money to buy the boat. Nice unicorn you've got there btw...

Years ago when I pulled the rudder from our Catalina 30, I used a small 35-pound Bosch breaker (jackhammer), with a spade attachment (shovel), to dig a hole about two feet below the rudder so the shaft would be clear of the boat. No, I did not get permission from the yard. 🤐 Covered the hole with piece of plywood and the small mound of dirt with a little tarp until the rudder was installed and the hole was filled back in.

You two are the fiberglass whisperers... Those patches looked great! When it weighs that much, maybe it's a Keeler? Every episode of your show reminds me (as an old guy) why I'm willing to pay extra for a boat that doesn't need any work. When I was younger and had more time than money, a diy project like this would be fine, but not now.

I'm a new viewer and Florida Man from Ft lauderdale. I used to do hydraulics, stabilizers and thrusters with my brother in law. He still owns NCH marine if you ever need anything like that in ft lauderdale. My buddy runs Marine Air SFL if you need AC/Refrigeration work. Both have well over 10 years experience. I also have family on Harbour Island Bahamas. Hope to cross paths one day.

Sasha, the man's jobs is to fill all the holes. The woman's job is to tell him how to do right. 😜 As for Prop, Keel, Rudder..after 14 so far working days..your both right. 🤣😂. Great Job on haul work so far. Youre both doing awesome. Love your vids.

My last haul out I was finally old enough, and smart enough to just pay the yard to do the bottom paint. Best $2400 I've ever spent on my 38ft boat.

Happy to hear you glassed over some of the many, to many might I add, holes in your boat. It was also refreshing to see you knew what the hell you are doing unlike so many "Sailing Channels" out there doing refits. You'd not believe how many I see doing patches in the reverse order to where the only layer truly holding onto the hull is the very first they put on or in other words they start with the biggest piece first or use to many larger pieces instead of doing what you did. You of course did it the right way and those patches should be just as strong or stronger than the rest of the hull. I really do wish you'd found a way to delete a few more of the thru holes but not knowing your boats systems that require all of them and the fact it isn't my boat I guess my opinion on it doesn't matter all that much. Great job getting some of the worst offenders done when it comes to boat work. As someone who did a lot of fiberglass work when I was younger I wholeheartedly agree with the if you can afford to pay someone else to do it or at least the initial grinding anyway, pay them it's worth it every time as long as they aren't asking crazy prices. I know you're already out there on the water or at least have already been out cruising and that your videos are lagging behind real time, so I'm glad to hear things worked out for you kids. Any refit you can sail away from safely in which you accomplished what you set out to do is a good one in my book, so job well done. Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

I loved the comment about bottom paint sanding!!! "If you can afford it, pay for it"!!! I just bought a bayliner 4550. First thing i did was a bottom job. As it was sitting in the blocks and i am staring at 20 layers of crappy failing bottom paint, i remember when it hit me!!!! Nope not this time, i aint doing it again. I paid to take the boat back to gelcoat. 8k and 2 weeks later....money well spent!!!

I had the same problem and ended up with a good old scraper actually in a modern form with a hollow handle to vacuum away the shreds of anti fouling. It worked better than the professional sander from the dockyard. That one I used in the last stage sanding a nice surface. I went down to the gelcoat and afterwards applied three coats of epoxy iot prevent osmosis. Then some primer and two coats of anti fouling. As for the moisture meters they quite often don't tell the truth. Since they are based om measuring electrical conductivity they get easily fooled by e.g. wiring behind the skin. Best thing is to go away from the rotten patch step by step until you reach dry wood as you did.
