Wow. I just can’t get over the audacity of some people. What ever happened to, “If you can’t say something nice, say nothing at all”? Life would be pretty boring if we all shared the same tastes. And, remember, sometimes we have customers who want a finish that we might not favor, ourselves. It’s good to step outside your comfort zone and explore other finishes and colors. And, you made it clear this was your intention. I am so sorry there are so many miserable people out there who find joy in criticizing others. I thought you did a great job trying new techniques to bring life to a piece that most would not attempt to salvage.

Appreciate the comment and encouragement, Kate! 😊 The comments come with the territory, for better or worse. Furniture refinishing/painting is VERY polarizing. We just try to focus on what we can sell locally, for good profit, while still pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone once in a while and try new things. I think some people don't realize that different styles sell different depending on area, but also the fact that furniture has been painted for thousands of years and was once a symbol of high society status. It's OK though, we've grown some thick skin and have to just remind ourselves that for every one nasty comment there are thousand more that either "like" or watch with no comment. So we keep things in perspective! 😊 -Ethan and Heather

I think you clearly stated that you were trying something new and you didn’t even know, yourself, if you’d like it. That’s the fun part of watching someone else on a video like this, because you can watch someone else using products or techniques and then decide if you would like to try it yourself. Nice video! :)

This is really cute. Some gilding would be even more improvement. And don’t listen to texture haters- they can go and buy their smooth characterless IKEA pieces or other over the counter crap. Beautiful! Did you happen to test this for lead? I had one very similar to this in my shop but when I tested it I found it had lead in the finish! I gave it back to the client and told her I did not want to touch it.
@BrickHouseVintageDIY3 жыл бұрын
We did not. While it was most common in heavier finishes like used on floorings and things like that, you are correct that it's definitely something to be aware of in furniture as well. You can usually tell by the look of it, after you've seen so many pieces. The texture and look are usually a good first giveaway. This wardrobe I wasn't worried about, but the 1800s empire dresser we recently did was a different story as that texture and flaky-ness was a pretty good giveaway. We always make sure to have a very well ventilated area regardless, and a hepa filter hooked up to the sander, but it's definitely something to keep in mind just as you would for paint. ;) You probably saved yourself a lot of headaches by knowing ahead of time, for sure!

@gottathinkupanewone Жыл бұрын
That's not actually a wardrobe: it's a chifferobe. Half is for hanging items, and the other half was probably a stack of drawers. It looks like it's from the 1920s or earlier, so is a genuine antique. It's very similar to one I have in a place of honor in my sunroom, although the veneer on mine was substantially undamaged, so it has never been refinished. I do wish there had been some way to save the finish on your piece, but I think that opportunity had fled before you even acquired it. It's sad how people will destroy the finish on a piece of furniture, not even thinking how much that loss devalues the piece.

I like the piece you added to the top. But I don't like the texture at all, nor the color, and the second lighter color, mottling it? Made it look worse. I think a darker color would have been better, and the rough areas are rough - it still would be better than what you started with.

I don’t like it either. Would rather have seen the woodwork being brought back to life. The legs looked like they were on their last, should’ve been replaced with leftover pieces in the shop? Maybe cut and removed the lower laminate from the doors and used sticky laminate in blonde to match the center detail, and used the rescued laminate for the top piece. Like the molding on top to replace the missing piece. The interior wood was cedar? Gorgeous. Painting it, not so good. Good luck with your future endeavors.
