Can We Talk About..? How Broken Cynder Is In The Legend Of Spyro: Dawn Of The Dragon (w. subtitles!)

Hi, DotD Low% speedrunner and somewhat dataminer here. About that Fear + Electricity combo, I've also stumbled upon a similar thing while playing DotD alone on Xbox 360 but with 2 controllers to get the Coop achievement (because I had no friend to play DotD with), but it was with Poison + Electricity instead. Once I started learning about memory viewers and how to use them, I did some testing and documentation about the damages in this game and many other things. Basically, how Lightning Bolt works is that it deals damage single frame but with a fixed combo rate of 2/second so that you don't deal a combo every single frame. The damage for each frame will be determined by the fps, because it is a damage-per-second type of attack. You will deal 2 times more damage per frame at 30fps than 60fps, for the same total overall (at lvl Max, it is 30damage/second). There are many other attacks that work like this such as Dragon Fire, Shadow Fire, Fury and Cyclone. However, most attacks will do fixed damage per hit instead, with a ''hit cooldown'' so that the enemy doesn't receive damage for every frame it is in the attack's hitbox. The thing is that when you hit an enemy with an element, and then hit it with another element, the cooldown of the first element will be cancelled. Not exactly sure about Melee tho. So, you combine this with Lightning Bolt (which, remember, deals continuous damage every frame), and you get an absolutely broken glitch, that I like to call ''Hit Cooldown Cancel''. Basically, you hit an enemy with an attack that has a lingering hitbox (so the hitbox doesn't disappear on hit) such as Shadow Strike, Siren Scream or lvl 3-Max Venom, and then, you switch to Spyro and hold Lightning Bolt. What's gonna happen next is that, after Cynder's attack hits, Lightning Bolt will hit the next frame (it looks like two attacks cannot hit on the same frame), which will cancel the cooldown of Cynder's attack. On the next frame, Cynder's attack is going to hit again for full damage (since it is a fixed damage-per-hit attack), then Lightning Bolt will hit on the following frame, then Cynder's attack, and so on. Which means that, every 2 rendered frame, as long as the enemy stays in Cynder's attack's hitbox, Venom/Shadow Strike/Siren Scream will hit for FULL DAMAGE (affected by the enemy's natural resistance to the element). I say rendered frame because you get less hits at 30fps than at 60fps, it is an fps dependant glitch. It is ABSOLUTELY BROKEN, considering that Lvl Max Siren Scream deals a base 150 damage per hit (Lvl Max Venom and Shadow Strike both deal 120 damage per hit if you get the good hitbox on Shadow Strike). Then, you combine Cynder's Silver Helmet, which increases the damage of her elemental attacks by 20%, you get up to 180 damage every 2 frames! You COULD use Dragon Fire too instead, but it doesn't lock enemies on place like Lightning Bolt, so the enemies will be pushed out of Cynder's hitbox quickly. Oh, and Lightning Bolt + Terrador's Punishment works too! And wanna know how much damage Lvl Max Fury does? 3000dmg/second (or 3600dmg/second with Cynder's Silver Helmet)! Well hot diggety-damn, it's been a while since I've been able to say this, so here goes: a KZbin comment that not only backs my original argument up with additional science, but also proves that this rabbit hole goes a lot deeper than I'd feared (heh) - on my channel!? I did kinda figure that there had to be some element (I'm on a roll) of one-dragon-cancels-the-cooldown-for-the-other going on.. ..but that it, seemingly with no greater intent, just so appears that Spyro has the perfect shoddily-coded Taser of Stunlocking and Cynder the perfect totally-balanced-damage-values breath attack to use, abuse, misuse and dump-at-the-nearest-shelter this "mechanic" is still more entertaining than it has any right to be. All they had to do was not make Electricity deal damage every frame, and game balance could've been.. well, it probably still wouldn't work entirely as intended depending on what exactly the cooldown time is for Cynder's things, but it wouldn't have been this.. this.. ..actually, I'm going to say it, if for nothing else then because I'll have this I can refer back to when people claim I'm "just hating on the marvel of game design that is TLoS for no reason": The absurdity of the broken mess that is this game (and, in a similar vein, the rest of TLoS - need I mention point blank high-level secondary Ice in the first and point blank rapid Earth Flail combined with Dragon Time in the second?) is a large - if not the main - part of the appeal. I mean, fuck it, nevermind the bit where Spyro games were never about the combat anyway, you're already playing as dragons in this definitely-not-just-someones-TTRPG-campaign-turned-video-game, would it really hurt to lean a little into that power fantasy?

I find Spyro's ice secondary more effective than Cynder's wind secondary, it might not be as good for fury, but that's because it will kill almost anything instantly. They both have a lot of powerful abilities.

I fucking love DOTD. I always used Cynder because she’s my favorite character and her abilities were so cool. I for one absolutely love how OP she is. She gave some of my fights much less of a headache (Especially in the air because I always struggled with the flight mechanics sometimes). - The main abilities I used were Fear and Wind. Shadow occasionally. I rarely ever touched poison. I did use it more consistently when I maxed it out. I always loved fucking shit up with her - I didn’t even know she was able to do half of this stuff in this video.

My guess for the shadow strike glitch is that the game checks if the currently played dragon is inside the cutscene trigger to play the cutscene, but when using shadow strike Cynder's hitbox is disabled so she can just sneak past the trigger until she reappears.

Cynder is so broken that it even broke her model. Not gonna lie, the fact that Cynder being playable in DOTD made her so OP was actually cool for me, the ammount of damage she does and how easy she made the bosses was insane. Even when the breaths from Spyro and Cynder combine, she alone makes ABISMAL damage! Really loved how you explained and showcased Cynder's abilities in the broken aspect in certain moments. I always found shadow to be way too OP. It makes enemies attack each other so if you have a lot more enemies on your butt than you can deal with you just make them fight each other and then focus on a smaller group that you can take on. Cynder is just press X to win.

Not that an ability that blinds enemies so they'll fight whatever happens to be closest to them isn't good - because it is in so many other games - but given the player's overall power level in this game with the added bonus of things like "terminate baddies with extreme prejudice" and "recharge the whole Fury bar using a handful of Grublins and one tornado which has the handy side-effect of temporarily stunning them", it's just hard to find a situation in which Cynder doesn't have more busted tools at her disposal than "make enemies pillow-fight eachother" or "deal a surprisingly-decent-actually-and-certainly-more-than-poor-Spyro-and-his-Fire amount of damage over time". I get the distinct impression that none of the five minutes of QA testing this game got were spent on making sure she was in any way balanced.

It's also a lot of easier to pull out the first time you play the game. You just go through all the dragons powers and oh look! You're invincible and then on top of dealing damages enemies attack each others. No magic cristals to find, no xp to farm (or very little), no coop mode.

Cynder's Cyclone looks like she inherited Asterix & Obelix's Twister, their most powerful and iconic move in the XXL series, made prior to DotD by the same devs on the same engine, also from which the Co-op gameplay and Hit counter directly come from. This move was capable of dispatching anywhere from hundreds, to a million enemies depending on the game, no wonder it's so OP!

I actually have a good reason for switching over to play as Spyro. He gets health regen armor and the non active dragon doesn't take damage so I'd burn all my mana as Cynder in boss fights and then switch to Spyro and ise melee attacks while Cynder regens mana and then switch once i get low on health and kite the boss until Spyro regened his health back up. It was a very effective strategy that made me really like the armor system

Yknow, as someone who played a bunch of this game as i was a kid, I was clicking on this expecting to hear about how spam-firing poison would result in a shotgun blast of doom, which i used to take out a huge chunk of health for the fight with Malefor in the void (though i got stuck on that fight anyway and stopped playing afterwards). I was honestly surprised to see the video ending with "why would anyone bother with poison"

I had a Spyro Games marathon and was extremely hyped to finally experience the TLoS trilogy again and one thing that stood out to me is how Cynder is just...cooler than Spyro. She's extremely unbalanced and because I played Dawn of The Dragon right after playing Devil May Cry 5, I've noticed that besides her abilities destroying everything on their own by simply spamming them, once you actually start chaining them together Spyro is just worthless, yes, the Electricity + Fear combo is the best one, but even on her own, she's just demolishing everything. Things that I want to add myself: 1) No matter what combo you'll use, her abilities just deal so much damage (Without Poison, fuck Poison.) Wind into Shadow? Fear into Shadow Knockup into Fear Missiles? Everything works, her numbers are fucked in the game's code. Spyro's Fire Breath is a great DPS tool but guess what, Cynder's Shadow Fire is not only more useful but also doesn't make you switch to a more useful breath in the middle of a fight. 2) I'm 100% sure that her AI is a lot more aggressive than Spyro's, simply take Spyro's electricity, walk up to an elite enemy that has the piss colored mask and start stunlocking him and instead of Cynder doing what Spyro is doing once you are fighting, which is slowly hitting or sometimes even refusing to fight as a whole, she'll just start pounding the guy, I promise, I played on the PS3 version and AI Cynder simply did more than AI Spyro. 3) Poison, Fear, Wind & Shadow, she has these cool sounding abilities, she literally wields Fear as a weapon, becomes one with the shadows and Spyro fucking shoots popsicles from his mouth and turns into a Green Sonic.

Some things to add to this video: Since I've now not just completed DOTD on RPCS3 but also broken out my actual PS3 to give primarily the Spiralling Winds of Breaking the Hit Combo Mechanic Which Doubles As A Multiplier For Fury Bar Recharge a go on real hardware, I can confirm that, while that version seems to have gotten about 15 more seconds of QA than the PS2 version this was all captured on, it's still a fair bit broken. Similarly, it would appear that rapidly switching character to take advantage of ludicrously wonky elemental match-ups has been made a bit more difficult. They do very much still work in 2-player, though. Which begs the question of whether or not any of the QA time was spent on 2-player. Then again, if they didn't spend the time in 2P, I'd have expected a better companion AI. Why has this game broken my head like this?

I love both Spyro and Cynder and shipping them. And it's always been fantastic, but the characters are overpowered to me. It's just so much fun to tear through hordes of enemies so them being overpowered never really was a problem to me. And Cynder was hands down one of my favorite characters to use. Just wish they had kept her black And hadn't made her inspire look so malnourished. Hope we get a remaster or a fourth game of the legend series.

Most elite enemies I fought were just by standing out of reach on a convenient green emerald platform and repeatedly spamming electric bolts or poison droplets from above. But with how long those take, and how some puzzles specifically require you to shadow enemies into the air just to have enough time to push a rock or switch, it seemed to me the devs were somewhat aware of how broken some mechanics were and compensated in the wrong ways (Quicktime events should have died with Space Ace, this was always a bad idea)

Thanks for this! I just played it through with my cousin like we used to, and I was using fear a lot (missiles op), and at one point my cousin reminded me that I used to like wind, I was like oh okay I'll try it, queue the tornado and me filling 90% of the fury meter for the rest of the game XD the combo of spyro electricity and fear/wind was nice, though I usually didn't have mana left and just used physical attack while they were stunned. Yeah, I really like this game hah, especially when played through every 5 years or so :D

Cynder was pretty broken on the DS version of the game too, which plays somewhat differently since it's mostly 2D except for the boss fights but has a lot of the same mechanics for both characters. Shadow and wind elements were both massively OP. It is the only Spyro game I can beat in a single day and Cynder is the reason why (in fact I think my second or third playthrough of the game took only 6-8 hours. To put in in perspective, I could only beat A New Beginning in a weekend by my fifth playthrough of the game, and it took me maybe 18 hours total). I would main Cynder and only switch to Spyro if I needed to give her a break because of health (which was mostly during the tail end of boss fights).

I love this game so much and I agree that Cynder is incredibly OP. When I play with others, they almost always choose Cynder because they're excited to play as someone other than Spyro. I always let the other person choose because I'm the one who owns the game so my guest can do whatever they want. Her OP status has helped out many new players because I'm just so good at the game so our power levels end up being even lmao. Also, that trick with Cynder's shadow??? I didn't know that that's so cool! I'll use it when I try speedrunning lmao. Something else about Cynder that I've noticed but havent gotten around to proving it: I think she is somehow disadvantaged in the Malefor fight? Me and a friend were playing and they kept dying over and over to those purple homing missiles. They're pretty bad at anything that isn't a hand-held video game so I was just being patient with them, until like, the 10th attempt. They swore up and down it wasn't them so we switched controllers, and I still had a hard time not dying. I can speed through the whole game without dying once, and I was suddenly being undone by this boss fight just because I switched characters. We considered the idea of the controllers being weird, but Malefor's powers just always targeted Cynder. We thought maybe in 2 player, there's some kind of difficulty setup in the game that changes and makes the Malefor fight absurdly hard, especially for cynder. I never got around to investigating this but it's something I'll look into.

I don't think the broken is limited to just Cynder. All you need to do to stunlock an enemy is to periodically tap Spyro's lightning bolt move. It cancels whatever animation the enemy was doing and costs almost no green bar.

Cynder is so broken that in the burnt lands, Cynder had only one health point left (yes this is possible, we couldn't even see the red in the health bar), my sister made her use the shadow ability and she turned into a pancake/disk. It was hilarious. Anyway, Cynder was this random, flattened disk that was just flying around, trying to avoid being attacked by the enemies so she didn't die. This lasted for about half an hour before someone jumped up and attacked her, because me as Spyro had to fight everyone, because as usual, the person with the overpowered/broken dragon let me/Spryo do all the fighting (she also always stole the health crystals from me, so I blame 99% of fails on her, either due to the crystal stealing, or because of her not using Cynder's abilities at the right time). Also another great combo I noticed was Spyro's electricity, ice, then Cynder's wind and just knock other enemies against each other.

Except she lost the Dark aka Dark Aether/Nether Fire from ANB after purged from corruption by Light Aether Spyro used, her Egg btw was a Grayish Purple color before the Corruption so wasn't always Black but it took time for her body to purge the last remaining energy or that Time Crystal Fury helped with her purification since it deals with time.

Yea cynder is broken but I still love them both. I been playing that game over and over again and studying it as well and my secrets for my comics. But if I make this game by the company if I succeed I promise make sure cynder and Spyro will be equal of there 6 elements each and not broken. Still there great dragons and hopefully you get to understand there good characters

XD Ironically, I think 99% of what I hear about these games revolve entirely around Cynder, I don't think anyone really talks about Spyro himself except for context and maybe some Dark Spyro stuff but she's kind of the only reason people care about the games despite their subpar gameplay. So to be fair, she kind of already hard carries.

I loved playing as Cynder, spamming the tornado/twister power on enemies until I got 999 hits. But PS2 Dotd.... why did they half-heartedly completed it, and give the other consoles better graphics...

The literal only good thing about Cynder in this game is the fact that she’s OP. Her shadow ability pulled me through, Spyro is functionally useless in my runs except for sometimes burning weeds, smashing walls or pulling stuff 😂 I honestly wish she only had one element though… Dark Fire, her OG element. To compensate for Spyro’s four, her one element would have to have better upgrade stats piled into one with more influence on the environment, but in a way that somehow doesn’t render Spyro anymore useless than he is in DotD. Tricky, but doable!

@@izzqyhere Fear + Electricity works better because Siren Scream deals more damage, which is a base 150dmg for every hit at lvl max compared to base 120dmg for lvl max Shadow Strike if you get the good hitbox, which is Cynder's hitbox. Shadow Strike has a very small secondary hitbox, which is the explosion-like effect located at the spot you released the button that deals a pitiful 20 damage at lvl max. Oh, and there are also Shadow Claws that spawn at lvl max that only deal 10 damage. You can only hit with one hitbox at a time, and if you get the bad ones, well, that's less damage overall. The only drawback is that Siren Scream's hitbox doesn't last as long as Shadow Strike's, which affects the overall damage in 1 player mode since there is a cooldown before you can switch again. Lvl max venom works really well too, since it always deals the same base 120 damage, and the hitboxes stay active longer than Siren Scream's. Lvl 3 venom works too but not that well, while lvl 1-2 doesn't work at all because the hitbox disappears as soon as it hits an enemy. Of course, the damage can be increased with Cynder's Silver Helmet, which increases the damage of almost every elemental attacks by 20% (some minor exceptions being the Shadow Strike's bad explosion hitbox and the Shadow Claws). And some enemies have resistances to specific elements which affects greatly the damage too.

I guess I was extremely shit at this game because I struggled playing as cinder. I was WORSE as Spyro (who my sister preferred). So maybe I was better only because Cinder was so good XD. I loved the fear bullets. And yup never used poison.
