Can You Allow Your 🦜 Parrot On Your Shoulder?

Is it ok to let your parrot sit on your shoulder, or are you telling your parrot that they are in charge?
In this video I talk about:
1 - The most important thing is the trust factor. If you don't feel comfortable with any parrot, you should not allow them on your shoulder. You have to build a mutual bond in order for you both to be safe and feel comfortalbe.
2 - You should be at the top of the 'pecking orderder.' This means that your parrots should know you are in charge. If that's the case, then where they go or what they do may become far less significant. If your parrot follows your lead, they are unlikely to hurt you or misunderstand being on your shoulder.
In that case, having them on your shoulder is a matter of convinience- you can be hands-free!

That doesn’t sound good! Is it gentle nips or bites that cut your skin? If it is gentle lips, your Conure is probably printing you to take care of you.

I love my Cape Parrot so much. When she was a baby she loved being on my shoulder. As she’s gotten older she doesn’t spend a lot of time on my shoulder she anymore. A Cape Parrots beak is mighty. I wouldn’t want to be bitten. A few times she has given me a little nip if I misread her body language. It was before I knew just because they put their head down doesn’t always mean they want a scratch. Otherwise very sweet and gentle bird.

My Capes are gentle too- and they change their mind sometimes about being pet- but such wonderful birds!

Shoulder riding? I think it depends on the bird and the size of the bird and beak. People have told me that I’m crazy to let my Caiques get on my shoulders or climb all over me. As you said it’s a matter of trust. They love to rub (surf) on me and love to taste me. If they get too wound up I move them to a perch. I never make a big deal out of it. I just perch them. If they persist they go into their cage. No screaming or yelling. If I’m not in control, believe me they will take over. I couldn’t imagine a large macaw on my shoulder. I’m a short person (5’). The macaw + gorgeous tail is probably as tall as I am. I don’t think there’s a cut and dry response. There are always shades of grey to consider. ❤️❤️❤️

Always shades of grey- I agree. And I think that you have to be in control with Caiques, so you obviously are (or you woundn't be getting a new bird-day gift of one!)-- Yeah, I'm aware and focused when my Mac'monsters are on a shoulder! LOL

@@ParrotBliss They are fine. A lot quiter than 4 month ago. Ada already shows some of the orange patches of adult birds. I tried to film an update, but Konrad damaged my Camcorder (he is addicted to buttons and zippers). I have to build a security box for my equipment before I can film new footage. It seems macey's voice has a higher pitch than my Jardin's. Surprisingly, since the Jardin's are smaller. Mine are 236/266g, only (Should be around 300g, but they gain no weight. Droppings are normal, so maybe it because of their high activity level).

I like the closeness of them being on my shoulder. My Caique is they only one that gets feisty from time to time but she’s generally good and sometimes cuddly. My Golden Conure female is the best. The male is too hyper! He doesn’t really sit still.

Thanks for the response. Yeah my ekkie constantly wants to be on my shoulder but I never let him because it's been drummed in my head that it will create a dominance problem. I think I'll let him go on from now on. I'm not worried about him biting me or anything.
@ParrotBliss
@ParrotBliss 2 жыл бұрын
He wants to be close and protected with you. Monitor and make sure that he knows you are in charge- and don't let him bite you in any way. You can even use your shoulder as positive reinforecement when he is behaving the way you want him to. Without saying anything or getting mad, remove him immediately if he does something you don't like. LMK how it goes.

What if you never established yourself as the dominant one with your parrot. Is there a way to change that after 3 years? When our bird went through the terrible twos he figured out that I was scared of his bites. My husband is the dominant one and our Senegal Niko thinks he's second in command. It could be a good video idea too. Thank you ❤️
