Target training has been a life-saver for me. I have a blue-fronted amazon. When she was a baby, I used a little plastic blue bear as a target. She has now graduated to a metal chopstick, and it comes in handy when she's not wanting to step up and I need her to move somewhere.

Some people ignore target training. It is very useful in setting a language with your feathered friend. You would just click and your bird will understand what you desire for him to do. Every bird owner should try it BTW Jamie you are 🌈 AWSOME 🌈👍🏻👍🏻

I love touch training. We use a chopstick and a clicker. We have a Ringneck parrot, that at times can be super cheeky. The other day, she decided to explore the inside of my mum’s handbag. When my mum went to get the bird out of her handbag, she went to bite her. I stopped my Mum and said I’ll get her out. And I touched trained her out of the bag and back onto the table. Once she was on the table I pulled the bag gently away. Touch training allows us to communicate on the same page in a positive way. Thank you for all your videos, they are helping!! I did heaps of research before we bought Hallie the ringneck but as amazing as she is, taking proper care of her and dealing with her personality takes a huge commitment. Every time we have friends over and they say they want a bird, we tell them to watch your videos first. Keep up the great work.

After watching a target training video on this channel I target trained my fearful dog. She loves training and going through different cues helps her work through her fears. Teaching her to touch her nose to my hand was such a game changer. When she is super heightened emotionally asking for such a simple trick can transition her into a work mindset where I can get other cues from her. We have gotten over bicycles, fireplace noises, bicycles, sooo many noises, certain people, objects flapping in the wind and so many others using the touch cue.

We ended up using a metal chop stick with our Eclectus as the wooden one he was nervous of and the nervous behavior turned into agression. But I discovered he likes shiny things when we were putting up our Christmas decorations years ago so we showed him both chop sticks and he was very curious about the metal shiny one. It worked a treat and still 6yrs on we regularly take it out it is very entertaining to him and a great way to introduce different things into his environment.

My mom has lovebirds, and only one (Blue) is able to be food motivated for clicker training. I use millet sticks on him and he responds well. His mate Fruitloops likes millet sticks too, but is not a handfed baby, so she only responds when it outside the cage. I need to get her comfortable with my presence and hands. Their only current chick is Indie, it's sibling died recently and that still really hurts. Indie is terrified of my presence, even more than it's mother. Indie doesn't have a favorite food yet I think or it's too scared to even think of food. It gives a flight response and tries actively running away and freaking out. I wanna change that, but it's kinda tricky without a favorite food.

Some birds may also have an interest in toys or verbal praise or petting as a reward for training, but that's very individual specific!!! Some birds just really really love petting for example as part of their personality, so a little scritch scratch may be great for that bird if you're on good enough terms to work that. But food is definitely the best option if you can. Good luck with your birdies!

If your food is seed, try giving pellets as an everyday food. If it’s pellets, try veggies. Then try millet stick or other seed. Also, put a towel over your hand so they don’t know it’s you. Good luck!

I've started target training with a plastic perch and a pen click, but we're purchasing a clicker from you guys (Bordtricks, the 3 set) and using a chopstick to teach instead. I have a Green Cheeked Conure and he's cuddly but he's young so he tends to be bitey (not aggressive, just nibbles). He LOVE targeting so far, but we're putting a pause on it because the clicker will help him understand he needs to touch the target more gently. We will be starting flight training with him (mostly recalls) when he gets his flights back in (they were clipped without permission). We aren't going to fly him outside until we actually get a trainer, but we are going to recall train him and harness train him (separately) in case he does escape, his harness gets loose, or gets cut, or someone tries to steal him, we can recall train him if he gets, say, stuck in a tree. We'll be training him with actual trainers, so hopefully all goes well and he learns to come back via recall. But we're going to be trying a lot of different things to make sure all goes well!

I trained my parrotlet on the 2nd day of having her. She wasn’t curious about he my chop stick enough to bite it on her own so I first touched it to her beak as gently as possible, clicked and treated. She then was eating and I did it again I guess she thought I was giving her food bit the stick and revived treats after that she was hooked. I used target training the rest of the week to teach her to spin, fly, step down and up. Target training helps out so much.

I have a cockatiel and we already tried target training!! He is pretty young(7 months old) and he did amazing!! He wasn't treated very well by the breader and so he NEVER allows anyone to touch him. He will get close to your hands only if you have seeds in it. And I was very surprised than he enjoyed target training!!🎉 We took a little break and now will start the training again!! I have budgies and I found it very difficult to juggle millet, a chop stick, and the clicker so I used a very small wooden spoon. I taped the clicker to the bowl of the spoon and used the end of the handle as the target. Works great! My budgies learned to touch the target after just a couple clicks- even my most nervous bird. They learned so fast it was incredible. It took a couple short training sessions to teach them to do simple tricks like walking through a small hoop, standing on top of the hoop, and turning in place. I am trying to get them to respond to their names, then I'll work on short flights. I have done a combination of target training with the whole flock (a bit chaotic but fun for the birds) and individual training. Thanks for your awesome vids- I couldn't have done it without you!

This is the first thing I taught my Hagi (Turquoise green cheek conure) didn't have a wooden chop stick handy so used a small dowel and sharpened both sides, this helps when its time to go to sleep and he doesn't want to go into his cage just target him into his cage with a nice treat for a good job done 😊

I have a 19 year old rescued scarlet macaw who was abused, has had a broken wing and was locked in a cage for the last 10 years! He surprisingly bonded with my 14 and 15 year old sons but is so scared of any adult. After getting bit a few times(once that probably required stitches) I tried targeting and it worked! It has become the only way that we can interact. He has learned to "spin" "wave" open his "wings" (the once broken one only half way) "dance" and say a few words on que from just learning one thing, TARGET TRAINING! I can pet him now too using a petting que but we haven't gotten to the point where either of us is comfortable with stepping up yet. He's totally different with my kids. They can hold him upside down like a baby and has never bitten them but he still doesn't trust adults yet because of the years of abuse he suffered. He will target and train with anyone but he prefers to only train with me for some reason, and I'm alright with that! I'll take whatever I can get. He's a work in progress but has come a long way thanks to targeting and all of your videos. They've helped me so much!

So far Jacob the GCC has learned to touch the stick, step up on a branch & turn around. He loves his tiny tabletop perch I keep on the kitchen counter. So funny yesterday he was on it and turned around before I asked him but he didn’t get a treat until he turned when I asked him. I love that perch because he can’t bite me when giving him a treat without falling off. Otherwise he’ll bypass the treat and go for the finger. I wish I would have known about capture training before. I learned from your video. When I first went to target train my GCC with the stick he’d reach out and grab it and hold it with his foot. Missed that! Now I can’t get him to do it. It was so cute. Since I cannot touch my Conure I’m so glad he’s trained to go into his cage when I ask him. He’ll do anything I ask him to avoid a towel. LOL He was a rehome. A woman sold him to the pet shop. Didn’t want him. Said he was mean. He came in a small cage with a very large hard leather chew toy for BIG birds which he slept in the top curled piece of leather and no other toys. I’ve had him since March of 2016 and just this past year he’s starting to play with toys a little. He’s very verbal and communicates a lot at night when he wants something.

I touched trained my mum's rainbow lorikeet, with a shorted garden bamboo stake, (about the size of a chopstick) and we started with potatoe chips dipped in his wet food as a treat. but of late have progressed to honey mixed with a little water on a teaspoon. and no clicker (he is a quite noise sensitive) but i do say good book once he has touched the stick and yes every time. the hardest bit was finding the right reward. he got bored with potatoe chips, really fast.. but honey currently is working wonderfully. mums bird is around 15/16 years old, and has never had his wings clipped so flys pretty well. Mum can no longer take care of him due to illness, so this channel has been super helpful. touch training was awsome. :D

I love your videos so much! I've been training our new budgies very slowly, and it's so satisfying to see the improvements they make! They are such smart little birds. :) Next up we'll be working on their diet. At the moment it's only regular seed from the pet shop (bought it when we bought them), but we'll be slowly introducing pellet mix and then converting them to a healthy seed mix down the line. Me and my husband unfortunately work a lot (reason why we got two budgies rather than one), so our time is limited with them and taming is taking a while. I'm still astounded by how much they learn. :D

All my birds are target trained. I used a wooden skewer for them. Both my Amazon's and my macaw took to it really quickly as well as my lovebird and my pionius. However, my Quakers were both a nightmare and took a long time to touch it. They were very fearful birds when got them and took a lot of patience to build up trust and confidence with them. I'm so glad I did as now they are trained with recall and other tricks all because they learned to target and are better a dealing with the unknown. I would recommend target training to every bird owner as it is the building block to a great bond with your birds. This was another great video! Thanks for your wonderful advice ♥️♥️

I have a CAG and use a chopstick (Asian so that’s easy to get). No clicker unfortunately, but we manage pretty okay w/out. Quite phobic at first but i realized it wasn’t exactly the stick she was scared of, it was ME with the stick. Tried again in a couple weeks after we bonded, and now she she targets great (except she wont go far unless it’s a great treat like a nutriberry. She understands perfectly fine but she’s stubborn haha).

I have a blue-headed pionus and I've used a device with a target stick and clicker in one. The stick is «expandable» so you can adjust it to desired length, and it has a small blue marker ball at the tip. Recently I've bought a separate clicker for use in non-target related training - since they're combined in the same device, my parrot would get distracted by seeing the target marker and try to reach it, understandably enough.

I target trained my budgie as a way to tame him (bought from a pet store). I used a rock candy stick and a pen as the clicker. I trained him inside the cage to target before step-up training. It was especially helpful to target my budgie back in his cage. I am now teaching my tiel (15 weeks old) to target and he caught on very fast.

I have a cockatiel right now, and I know with my past experience with these birds is that they won’t bite unless it’s a last resort. Once we trained on the trust issue, he now knows that when he sees my hands he isn’t gonna get hurt and it also means freedom. He happily steps up on my hand so I can take him out to enjoy some training and bonding time with me. I only use my hands and he enjoys it. Today, I took the day off from the school where I work at, and I plan on bringing him to school this afternoon to visit with the kids for a little while. Targettraining is great, 3 weeks ago i adopted an blue fronted amazon, from around 3 years old. I dont know why but he dont like stepping up hands. So i started from day 2 with targettraining , He loves to do it! Now 3 weeks later i can get him in or out the cage, we do some flight training inside ofcourse! and since yesterday he flies and landed on my hand multiple times. My birds right now are dogs and a cat. I use a pencil, a clicker, and dog food as rewards. My cat now spins in a circle on command and my dogs can be led just about anywhere just by showing them a pencil. I took your advice in a different video and I just started training everyone... So when it's time to get a bird I'll be prepared as far as touch training goes.

Hi just saying this for people who don't have a clicker you can also use an old pen and click the top it works for my lovebird and I actually find it easier to use than a clicker if you feel too uncoordinated to use it since you can just tape it to your target stick and you won't have to worry about holding it

I lucked out with an AMAZING budgie boy from PetSmart of all places -- he has a natural curiosity about the chopstick and at first was more interested in the stick than the treat! He's starting to understand the click now though...the little lightbulb in his head is starting to flicker on when he hears it, so good progress heheh.

No birdies here (sadly) but I use target training with my dogs. They are trained to use either a stick (chopstick) with no command or the tip of my finger with the command "boop". I find the finger is more useful most of the time but the stick really helps when I'm trying to train a multi-part trick. I actually find your videos with birds more informative and useful than any of the actual dog-training videos just because you break everything down so well. Love your vids. Also especially love seeing blueberry getting treated like just another big bird XD I hadn't actually considered a small budgie because I always thought I couldn't do with them the stuff I can with a bigger bird (scritchie cuddles!) but maybe I was wrong!

We have a Pineapple GC Conure - 6 months old. His target is a plastic brown cap. Loves it and will target that. He knows step up and for coming out of his cage he steps onto my palm and "cuddles" into my hand. Okay, So somebody at home asked me to ask you a question and I was like- “This person has at least 300 comments or more every video she has, What is going to make you think she will respond to us specifically”. But I do want to ask because I’m defiantly not good with working with smaller birds, I would be better off with a macaw then the type of bird we have. My dad got impatient and impulsively got a bird and left it with us. No preparation, no flight cage, the cockatiel came in a extremely small cage and we had to get it a flight cage. It got worse when my dad got another one. They wanted to kill each other by picking at the back of each others head aggressively. Along with this we have two dogs and one of them is actually more scared then aggressive with birds while the other one will literally go insane if they even see one. So we got the birds a flight cage and my mom wanted to help me train them to be “tame” because she saw me suffering. But these birds (no matter what technique we have tried for 3 months) do not want to work with us when we used food as a bribery. They want to be aggressive. I would be patient because I didn’t want the bird to think “If I act aggressive they will leave me alone”. I don’t know what I’m doing and my relationship with my father is going down because of his ignorance of getting a bird I don’t know anything about.

I would definitely try to re-home them if you think they would be better off with someone else. If you still want to try taming them I would keep doing what you are doing and maybe several times a day. It took my 6 months to tame my lovebird and he was the same.

Also definitely try to separate them if you want to move forward with them because if they have the option to bond with each other or you they will definitely want to chose another bird

Shinee's back Agree. My conure only became amenable to training when I separated him from my parakeets. Around them he was defensive of them and aggressive towards me.

I foster birds for my local rescue, I love teaching birds who are unsocialized how to return to their cage on cue. This way they can come out to play, explore and get exercise and enrichment without new owners struggling with the worry of how to get their bird back in the cage stress free. It sets up a great foundation for tricks and other behaviors too I use a straw! Less likely to be shredded and I find it really helpful to lure some birds to a spot by putting food in the end of it! I can wedge a sunflower or safflower seed in the end to get birds started, and as they become comfortable I start offering the treat from my hand or a spoon. I also prefer using a button clicker instead of a box clicker. I have really small thumbs so the box style are hard for me to get an accurate click. I can also squeeze it in my palm, with any finger, or in my pocket by just pressing down through the pocket

You use a what? What is a "stray"? Sorry if that is a really stupid question. I'm just struggling a lot with my 2 cockatiel rescues that came from a hoarding situation. Also is a button clicker softer by any chance? Like not as loud as the box one? No matter what I try to do with showing them it means "treat", they've just had so much trauma that the loud (if you can even call it loud) "click" just makes them jump. Even if I have managed to get one of them to finally touch the target, the click has then scared him so much he doesn't even want his treat. Lol. Poor guy. 😕 So I'm just reading through hoping to see if anyone mentions their different clicker ideas and yours was the first I saw that mentioned one, aside from just not using one at all, however, I don't think that's an alternative option here. Haha

Scarlson 325 you could try using something like a Snapple cap - that click is pretty soft-sounding! You can also muffle the clicker by wrapping it in some fabric.

And yea I was thinking maybe I could tape it to the stick or something and then maybe that would help muffle it, while also helping with my poor coordination of holding the target, treat, and then clicking at the right time; without them seeing the clicker either, because obviously SEEING this foreign object means game over too.🤦‍♀️ lol Well thank you! A straw, not a stray 🤦🏽‍♀️ Button clickers tend to be more crisp in my opinion, but it's much easier to stick it in your pocket to muffle it, because you don't have to put your hand into your pocket and your thumb inside the box, I find it much easier to use! Just put the button clicker in your pocket and press it against your leg. You can also use your mouth to make whatever noise you want, a click or a kiss or even just saying YES. My service dog was clicker training and also understands that YES means she's doing the right thing and to keep going, but you can easily use the word yes for your mark. Clickers are just preferred because it sounds the exact same every time (mostly!) and it's quick. You could always work up to as clicker. Start with just saying yes, then use your mouth to click, then the clicker. There are no hard and fast rules here when it comes to your marker, the point is that it creates a bridge between the behavior and the reward :)

@@14Raine14 hahaha a straw! Ohhh okay! That makes more sense now 😂 Yea I need to get a lot more creative with these guys. They're VERY skiddish. Came from an apt where the tenants had been evicted and they were behind and discovered about a week later. There were 38 cockatiels total all in one, not very big cage. So tragic. 💔 I havent been able to really handle them a ton, I don't think they ever were. I mean it's not like I can't get them in or out of the cage, and also don't need to use a towel or anything traumatizing, just not trusting to step up or very willing type of way yet. Been a very different experience from my previous cockatiel I had that I was very close with. And even my current GCC who isn't super trained and is also quite nippy because she also wasn't treated so great by her previous owners either. But she has come very far from that though, I used to not be able to handle her without covering my hands from being bitten. Her issue with this is being too aggressive with the target stick, so this was definitely helpful to watch and learn to click on the reach before she can bite/attack it and/or keeping it further from her. Thats funny though, I actually used "yes" with my dog's training as well because that's how the dog trainer taught me... or trained me. Lol. Should have thought of that myself! I think my OCD makes me always try to be a "by the book" type of person, and so I guess I was just trying to do it "the right way" when you are absolutely right! Clearly there isn't ONE right way, which is great though because I felt like giving up and now I feel much more hopefu! Lol I really appreciate the tips and suggestions! I have a lot more faith now that my tiels will start making some progress too soon enough. Definitely grateful to have found this birdtricks community! ❤😊 thanks again!

I’m going to try this yesterday. I got a Derbyan parakeet a couple of days ago after losing my previous bird and this is the biggest bird I’ve ever heard. He’s still a lit nervous so hopefully this will help him getting more comfortable around everyone 🤞🏻

I have 2 green cheek conures and a red bellied parrot. All 3 and target trained. the conures I’ve had since babies (their 1.5 years old now) they all use a wood stick I think it’s normally used for kabobs. The parrot I got at 12 and that’s all she knows right now and I used at to help us bond when I first brought her home.

I have a Hahns Macaw named Noah. He is target trained two ways and with universal targets. He will target with his beak for the word “touch” and with his feet for the word “foot” on any of his target items. This way if he is in a bad mood i can work with him in the cage and give him two different things to do and he quickly gets out if a foul mood because he has to focus on which word I’m asking for. His target objects include a disposable plastic straw (soft plastic and multicoloured) wooden or plastic chopsticks, random sticks from my garden (safe trees planted for him), wooden skewers, a pen, or a finger (depends on his mood!) or basically any long thin object of that nature. He is currently afraid of his new bath perch (blue pvc pipe) so i took it off the suction cups and to get him to come to it by himself we are getting him to target it! Works a treat! He is also trained to do several tricks like put his wings up and say “im an eagle” if he is shown a peace sign. To “shake” if you shake a fist And is learning animal sounds with verbal cues. And after watching one of your other videos this week he now knows how to wave!!! Roll over and spin is next! How do i train that? I have no idea! But he will get it before i do im sure! Also thanks for the tip about crate training! Noah hates his crate so thats gonna help heaps!

My Green Cheek Conure learned target training his first week home. He does beak to chopstick. We have used this behavior to train other behaviors like circles and high fives💚🦜💙

what bird: 2 budgies and a conure what I used: Chopstick how long: 2 days (It can be shorter are longer depending on your bird) what treat: I used Millet for my budgies and for my conure I used sunflower seeds (Not all birds like these things so try other things as well!) Btw: love your vids :D
